Hello. Welcome to my English class. I’m your new English teacher. In this class, we will learn about Unit 4 A glimpse of the future, Developing ideas(writing). Please get your book and pen ready. Let’s go! Part 1 Lead in First of all, let’s watch a video together! 超乎你的想象-哔哩哔哩】 https://b23.tv/gLqPcP0 So interesting, isn’t it What’s the video about ——It’s about robots. What can robots do Now, let’s think about another question. What can robots do in different jobs For example: (呈现机器人在各行各业的应用) At home: Robots can clean the floor, cook meals, and take care of old people. In hospitals: Robots can help doctors do operations, give medicine, and carry patients. In factories: Robots can build cars, pack products, and work with heavy machines. In shops: Robots can serve food, answer questions, and help customers. In dangerous places: Robots can explore space, go under the sea, fight fires, or guard prisons. In the future, some people think robots can really replace humans in guarding prisoners. Would you feel safe if robots guarded a prison Student 1 (Yes): Yes, I would feel safe. Robots are faster and stronger than humans. They can work all the time without rest, and they can use advanced technology to stop prisoners from escaping. I think robots make prisons more secure. Student 2 (No): No, I wouldn’t feel safe. Robots can have problems or break down, just like the news said in the story. If they stop working at the wrong time, it could be very dangerous. I think prisons still need human guards. That’s a very good reason. Some people believe robots are reliable, but others worry that machines are not perfect. In today’s reading, Todd also feels worried when he hears about a prison breakout. Why is he so concerned, and what happens after his wife leaves home Let’s read the passage together and find out! Todd and Caroline are a couple from 100 years later. In the future, people will live a technological life. Everything has become convenient and digitized. Let's board the spaceship and see their lives. Now, let’s get ready to experience the future. You can step into their kitchen and watch the breakfast robot preparing a hot meal for the family. You can also read the latest hologram news floating above the table, just like a shining blue screen in the air. And if you explore further, you may find robots working in prisons, taking the place of human guards and keeping everything under control. Finally, at the end of our journey, you will meet Todd and Caroline. Read the story and answer the questions. What happened to the prison and what was the cause The prison had a breakout because the robots there broke down. The faulty robotics were blamed. What kind of job do you think Carolyn has Give your support. She probably works in a maximum-security prison where robots are used. Her job may be related to managing or supervising the prison robots. Support: “But the report says that even new, regularly-maintained robots can break down,” Todd protested. “And in a maximum-security prison like yours, one small error could cause a lot of problems.” Are there any sentences that might foreshadow what will happen next Underline them. Foreshadowing伏笔 is when the author gives a clue as to what is to come later in the story. This often appears at the beginning of a story, or a chapter, and helps the reader develop expectations about the coming events in a story. Foreshadowing 1: “But the report says that even new, regularly-maintained robots can break down,” Todd protested. “And in a maximum-security prison like yours, one small error could cause a lot of problems.” Reason: This suggests that even Carolyn’s advanced prison robots might fail, hinting at a possible accident or emergency later. Foreshadowing 2: “It was not until an hour later that he noticed that Carolyn had left her emergency call device on the breakfast table.” Reason: Leaving the emergency device behind hints that Carolyn may encounter trouble without a way to call for help. Part 3 While-writing Step 1: Review Foreshadowing Let’s look at the sentences you underlined in Part 2. These are the clues the author left for us. Think carefully: what problems could happen to Carolyn or the prison robots next ” Tips: Find clues: Pay attention to sentences that hint at future events. Ask yourself: What might happen next because of this clue Connect to characters’ actions and feelings: How would Todd and Carolyn react Keep it logical: Make sure the following events match the foreshadowing. Examples: 1. What might go wrong if the robots break down Student: If the robots break down, the maximum-security prison might become unsafe. Prisoners could escape, alarms might not work, and there could be chaos. This could put both the staff and the public in danger. 2. How could Carolyn be in danger without her emergency device Student: Without her emergency device, Carolyn cannot call for help if something goes wrong. If the robots fail or there is an accident, she might be trapped or unable to get assistance quickly. 3. How might Todd react Student: Todd would probably feel very worried and anxious. He might try to contact Carolyn, check on the robots remotely, or rush to help her if he can. He may also think about how to prevent the situation from getting worse. Step 2: complete the notes to plan the rest of the story. Example: Setting Time: 100 years in the future, morning Place: Todd and Carolyn’s home; in a maximum-security prison Characters Todd – Carolyn’s husband, worried about the prison robots Carolyn – works at the prison, left her emergency device behind Prison robots – responsible for security Prisoners – could escape if robots fail Plot Todd reads the news about a prison breakout caused by faulty robots Carolyn leaves for work, forgetting her emergency device Robots in Carolyn’s prison begin to malfunction or face a critical error Todd realizes the danger and tries to respond, while Carolyn may encounter a risky situation Ending Carolyn and the robots face the problem and find a solution Todd helps or finds a way to prevent disaster The situation is resolved, and both Todd and Carolyn learn a lesson about technology and safety The story ends with a reflection on how dependent humans are on robots Step 3: Continue the story and share your story. CriteriaExcellent (4)Good (3)Fair (2)Needs Improvement (1)ScoreUse of ForeshadowingCorrectly identifies foreshadowing clues and integrates them into the continuation naturallyIdentifies most clues and uses them with minor mistakesIdentifies some clues, but connection to story is weakDoes not identify or use foreshadowingStory StructureClear beginning, middle, and ending; events follow a logical orderMostly clear structure; minor gaps in sequenceSome structure, but events are confusing or out of orderNo clear structureCreativity & ImaginationVery creative; introduces interesting and plausible eventsCreative ideas, but slightly predictableSome creativity, mostly standard ideasLittle or no creativityLanguage & GrammarUses past tense correctly; sentences are varied and accurateMostly correct tense and grammar; minor errorsFrequent errors but still understandableGrammar mistakes make it hard to understand
Language support:
(Time / Sequence Words) After Carolyn left home, Suddenly, At the same time, Just in time, After the crisis (Expressing Feelings) Feeling nervous, Her heart skipped a beat, Todd sighed with relief 3. 对话(Dialogue ) “Oh no! The robots are failing,” she whispered. “We really depend on these machines,” he said. After Carolyn left home, Todd stayed behind, still worried about the news. He kept thinking about the prison robots and the recent breakout. Suddenly, his screen beeped—an alert from Carolyn’s workplace. One of the security robots had malfunctioned, and a section of the prison was temporarily unguarded. Todd grabbed his tablet and tried to contact Carolyn, but there was no answer. He remembered she had left her emergency device on the breakfast table. Feeling nervous, he rushed to the aircar station and flew toward the prison. At the same time, Carolyn was walking through the prison hall, unaware of the malfunction. She noticed that some doors were not locking properly. Her heart skipped a beat. “Oh no! The robots are failing,” she whispered. She quickly used the manual override to secure the prisoners and called Todd through a backup system. Todd arrived just in time to help reset the main control system. Together, they restored order. The prisoners were safe, and the robots returned to normal operation. After the crisis, Todd sighed with relief. “We really depend on these machines,” he said. Carolyn nodded. “Yes, but we also have to stay alert and be ready for anything.” They smiled, knowing that teamwork and careful planning were just as important as technology. Part 4 Moral education Todd and Carolyn faced a problem when the prison robots malfunctioned. Even though technology helped them a lot, it could not solve everything by itself. What lesson can we learn ” Balance between technology and human effort – no matter how advanced technology is, human judgment and careful planning are equally important. Technological innovation should follow four basic principles: Respect for life and health; Respect for the natural environment; Respect for social relations Maintaining a people-centered approach. Part 5 Homework It's time for homework! There are 2 levels. Must do: make comments on your partner's story and see whether the language style is consistent. Choose to do: Imagine you are Carolyn. In the future, what measures would you take to prevent robot malfunctions or other accidents at the prison Write 4–6 sentences.
