Fooled by Randomness is a famous book in Nassim Nicholas Taleb’s landmark Incerto series, an investigation of luck, uncertainty, probability, human error, risk, and decision-making in a world we don’t understand.
Now in a striking new hardcover edition, Fooled by Randomness is the word-of-mouth sensation that will change the way you think about business and the world. Nassim Nicholas Taleb — seasoned trader, renowned risk expert, knowledgeable scholar, and New York Times bestselling author of The Black Swan — has written a modern classic that turns on its head what we believe about luck and skill.
This book is about luck — or more precisely, about how we perceive and deal with luck in life and business. Set against the backdrop of the most notable forum in which luck is mistaken for skill — the world of trading — Fooled by Randomness provides captivating insight into one of the least understood factors in all our lives. Writing in an entertaining narrative style, the author tackles major intellectual issues related to the underestimation of the influence of happenstance on our lives.
The book is populated with a number of characters, some of whom have grasped, in their own way, the significance of chance: the baseball legend Yogi Berra; the philosopher of knowledge Karl Popper; the modern financier George Soros; and the Greek voyager Odysseus. We also meet the fictional Nero, who seems to understand the role of randomness in his professional life but falls victim to his own irrational foolishness.
However, the most recognizable character of all remains unnamed — the lucky fool who happens to be in the right place at the right time — he embodies the “survival of the least fit.” Such individuals attract devoted followers who believe in their mentor’s (导师) insights and methods. But no one can copy what is obtained by chance.
Are we capable of distinguishing the fortunate charlatan (冒充内行的人) from the genuine innovator Must we always try to uncover nonexistent messages in random events It may be impossible to guard ourselves against the unpredictability of the goddess Fortuna, but after reading Fooled by Randomness we can be a little better prepared.
24. What is Fooled by Randomness mainly about
A. The success of modern traders. B. The importance of skill in trading.
C. The role of luck in life and business. D. The impact of human errors on decision-making.
25. What’s the purpose of mentioning the characters in paragraph 4
A. To highlight the significance of their achievements.
B. To emphasize their success in the trading world.
C. To illustrate how foolishness always leads to failure.
D. To show examples of those who understood randomness.
26. What does “lucky fool” in paragraph 5 really refer to
A. A trader known for their skill and achievements.
B. A scholar famous for their insights and methods.
C. Someone who owes their success to skill, ignoring luck.
D. A person who foolishly undervalues hard work and devotion.
27. According to the passage, what mistake do people often make
A. They overestimate their personal abilities.
B. They fail to see how chance affects their success.
C. They depend heavily on guidance from mentors.
D. They overlook significant events in daily life.
C
In satellite images of the Earth from space, the United States seems to split in half: the eastern side is much brighter than the west. Across the Atlantic, Europe glints. The Nile Delta in Africa glows like a diamond. Farther east, Hong Kong and Shanghai are afire. Developed society, it’s clear, is where the light is.
A growing field of research suggests that night-time light itself is far more dangerous than the dark. Everything that lives on this planet evolved during billions of years along a reliable cycle of day and night. But artificial light breaks the cycle. This causes sleeplessness among astronauts who take pills but still get only six hours of shuteye. Shift workers, who rise with the night and work in blue light, experience not only disturbed circadian rhythms (昼夜节律), but an increased likelihood of breast cancer.
When we, in the industrialized world, do manage to turn off the lights, there are measurable, beneficial effects. In a widely reported paper last summer, Kenneth Wright at the University of Colorado took eight students camping in the Rocky Mountains for two weeks. They weren’t allowed to use any artificial light after sunset — only the glow of campfire. After a week, melatonin (褪黑素) started to rise at sunset, peak at midnight, and decrease just at sunrise. “Internal biological time under natural light-dark conditions tightly synchronizes with environmental time,” he said.
For those of us addicted to our glowing phones and tablets, an app called Flux can help. It ‘warms’ your device’s display screen so that it shifts red in the evening, more closely matching the color of the setting sun. Just a brief glimpse at your mobile phone at bedtime is enough to expose your eyes to artificial light, so fighting such a disturbance might be an exercise in vain. But even if we can’t completely contain our thirst for light, we can all make one small gesture, which could stimulate us to unplug a little more.
28. What can we infer from paragraph 2
A. Darkness poses health threats to shift workers.
B. Sleeplessness are more likely to cause breast cancer.
C. Humans can easily adapt to the changing surroundings.
D. Astronauts take pills to minimize day-and-night cycle disturbance.
29. What does the underlined word “synchronize with” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Correspond to. B. Interact with. C. Object to. D. Blend with.
30. How does Flux help reduce the harmful effects of artificial light
A. By blocking artificial lights. B. By warming the screen temperature.
C. By reducing screen brightness. D. By creating the natural change of light.
31. What’s the purpose of the final sentence
A. To settle a debate. B. To suggest a solution.
C. To promote a product. D. To contradict an assumption.
D
Metaphor is for most people a device of the poetic imagination and the rhetorical flourish - a matter of extraordinary rather than ordinary language. Moreover, metaphor is typically viewed as characteristic of language alone, a matter of words rather than thought or action. For this reason, most people think they can get along perfectly well without metaphor. We have found, on the contrary, that metaphor is pervasive in everyday life, not just in language but in thought and action as well. Our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature.
The concepts that govern our thought are not just matters of the intellect. They also govern our everyday functioning, down to the most ordinary details. Our concepts structure what we perceive, how we get around in the world, and how we relate to other people. Our conceptual system thus plays a central role in defining our everyday realities. If we are right in suggesting that our conceptual system is largely metaphorical, then the way we think, what we experience, and what we do every day is very much a matter of metaphor.
But our conceptual system is not something we are normally aware of. In most of the little things we do every day, we simply think and act more or less automatically along certain lines. Just what these lines are is by no means obvious. One way to find out is by looking at language. Since communication is based on the same conceptual system that we use in thinking and acting, language is an important source of evidence for what that system is like.
To give some idea of what it could mean for a concept to be metaphorical and for such a concept to structure an everyday activity, let us start with the concept ARGUMENT and the conceptual metaphor ARGUMENT IS WAR. This metaphor is reflected in our everyday language by a wide variety of expressions: ARGUMENT IS WAR.
Your claims are indefensible.
He attacked every weak point in my argument.
His criticisms were right on target.
I demolished his argument.
I’ve never won an argument with him.
You disagree Okay, shoot!
If you use the strategy, he’ll wipe you out.
He shot down all of my arguments.
It is important to see that we don’t just talk about arguments in terms of war. We can actually win or lose arguments. We see the person we are arguing with as an opponent. We attack his positions and defend our own. We gain and lose ground. We plan and use strategies. If we find a position indefensible, we can abandon it and take a new line of attack. Many of the things we do in arguing are partially structured by the concept of war. Though there is no physical battle, there is a verbal battle, and the structure of an argument - attack, defense, counterattack, etc. -reflects this. It is in this sense that the ARGUMENT IS WAR metaphor is one that we live by in this culture; it structures the actions we perform in arguing.
32. Which of the following statements will the author most probably agree with
A. Metaphor is primarily a literary tool that polishes our thoughts and expressions.
B. The actions involved in argument is understood in terms of war conceptually.
C. People’s action is generally more dependent on metaphor than on concept.
D. The concept of argument exists on the precondition that there is war.
33. According to paragraph 3, what is the relationship between language and our conceptual system
A. Language and the conceptual system are structured separately and automatically.
B. The conceptual system remains inaccessible despite the revelation of language.
C. The conceptual system provides various definitions for our language.
D. Language provides clues to what constitutes the conceptual system.
34. The underlined word “demolished” is closet in meaning to “________”.
A. defeated B. dismissed C. justified D. favored
35. What can be inferred from the passage
A. War is non-verbal argument. B. Our communication is metaphorical.
C. Concepts are internally constructed. D. Few people speak in metaphorical language.

Earlier this month, OpenAI revealed a new version in training mode that is “good at creative writing.” Though its release date is unclear, as a longtime freshman composition instructor, I’m already aware of the problem of A. I.-assisted cheating in writing classes. 36 After all, students have been unvoluntarily exposed to an overwhelming amount of promotion around A. I., and have seen news that makes false claims about how powerful A. I. tools are.
But a creative writing student using A. I. In a memoir (传记) writing class What are you saying about your life if even you can’t be bothered to think about it.
Having written two memoirs, I know the challenges and pleasures of this work, and I want my students to experience those challenges, too. 37 Rather, it is about defining who you are, in part by revisiting particularly unpleasant experiences. This process makes the author more fully alive.
38 Using a machine that gathers information online and creates a fake version of you is not just cheating; it degrades our memories and humanity. Yet it’s not the students who concern me most, but a culture that undervalues writing and reading so much that some students think skipping them is a reasonable choice.
The only thing under my control as a teacher is what I do in my classroom. 39 Whether they write best-sellers or just scribble in journals, doing the work with their full selves is what truly matters.
Writing can be a way to preserve ourselves and even a form of resistance. 40
A. I’ll teach students to write honestly.
B. I can even sympathize, to an extent.
C. This may feel like a battle already lost.
D. Outsourcing your life story to AI is disheartening.
E. The act of writing a memoir is not just about saying “Look at me”.

G. It is upsetting to see AI creating fake stories, but maybe it’s just new storytelling.

I’m not known to be a particularly lucky person. Raffles (抽奖), t-shirt cannons, radio calls, random roommate selections — none of these ever seem to work out in my favor. But my fortune seemed to hit an all-time low last Monday.
The day started nice enough. I went to work, got off at five and decided to head to the beach. It was sweltering hot, and I knew the cool waters of Lake Michigan would help wash away my sweat. The first sign of trouble was when my cellphone navigation stopped working properly and showed the wrong directions. I was new to the area and didn’t quite know my way around yet, so I ended up taking a wrong turn and driving through a web of neighborhoods, turning a 10-minute drive into a 40-minute one.
But fine, I get lost often. I made it to the beach eventually. Took a quick dip in the water, had a bite of the butter paneer I had picked up earlier. I made it back to my car, pulling some clothes out to change into. As I headed to the restroom, I realized I had forgotten a shirt. So I walked back, tugged on the handle and realized with horror that my keys were sitting in the passenger seat of my car.
I called AAA (American Automobile Association). As it turns out, I don’t have an AAA membership. I called my parents and they anxiously tried to figure out how to add me to their card, while my phone battery was at 21% and dropping.
I called AAA again, and they informed me that they would be there in about an hour and a half, which seemed like a long time as I sat on top of the trunk of my car. The sun was lowering in the sky and the parking lot was emptying out. I heard thunder, and I saw people exiting the beach at an increasing rate. When I checked my weather app, I saw an alarming update: a heat advisory (预警), a 100% chance of a lightning storm, and a tornado warning.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Fearful and alone, I stood frozen as thunder rolled closer.

W: Yes, no problem.
M: Great, also next Friday. We’ll have some work done to Mr. Paul’s house before he moves in. We’ve got some people to decorate his kitchen but if you could do some weeding in his garden that would be wonderful.
W: Okay, I’ll enjoy that.

W: It’s my pleasure.
M: People say you’re doing unpaid work in the new season of My Fair Lady. Is this what the show business has become

Hi, everyone. This is the monthly meeting of our club. We’ve been fortunate to have got good advice from some famous athletes on how to improve our skills and build up our body. Today, we’ll hear something different. We’re honored to have Emma Wilson here. Emma is a health expert and lecturer from UBC, the University of British Columbia. Emma worked for a football team in Manchester, then for a very successful rugby team in Dublin, and finally ended up working here in Vancouver. Emma says it’s challenging to be a health expert, because people can be easily influenced by advertisements that lack scientific support. Also, people aren’t willing to change their views about food and nutrition as there is so much confusing information online. It’s really important to hear what experts say and that’s why we’ve invited Emma here. She isn’t going to tell us about everything we should eat, but she will teach us to make better choices. Let’s welcome Emma Wilson.

【答案】Fearful and alone, I stood frozen as thunder rolled closer. The wind picked up, whipping sand against my legs, and raindrops began to fall down. Just as panic struck me, a silver sedan pulled up beside me. The window rolled down to reveal a middle-aged woman who had kind eyes. “You look like you could need some help,” she said, gesturing for me to get in. Without hesitation, I piled into her car, my relief drowning out the storm’s fury.
The kind lady drove me through the pounding rain toward a nearby Starbucks. She chatted calmly about the weather, her voice was steady in the chaos. Once inside, she bought me a hot coffee and insisted on waiting with me until AAA arrived. As we sat, the tornado alarm disappeared in the distance, but her presence turned the crisis into a strange, shared adventure. When the tow truck finally pulled up, she handed me her umbrella and smiled. “Good luck,” she said. “And maybe tomorrow will be your lucky day.” I watched her drive off, my heart oddly lighter—proof that even in misfortune, kindness could still shine through.
