Nyalowala’s parents are disappointed. Their son took a boat from their riverside village to the city of Mbandaka, in the heart of the Congo Basin rainforest, where he attended a teacher-training college. They wanted him to become a crocodile(鳄鱼) hunter, like his father and most of his ancestors. “There is a lot of pressure,” says Nyalowala. Hunting for bush meat is popular—and may pay better than teaching.
However, it harms wildlife in the rainforest, which covers six countries and is second in size only to the Amazon. Around 6 million tons of bush meat are thought to come out of the Congo Basin each year. The number of animals killed for the pot has been increasing. More hunters are selling their prey(猎物) in markets, instead of eating it themselves. The trade has emptied out parts of the forest; almost 39% of it is at severe risk of over-hunting. Everything from bonobos, an endangered species of ape, to antelopes and, occasionally, elephants, appears at market in Mbandaka.
Over-hunting has made life more dangerous for crocodile hunters. The number of dwarf crocodiles, once common in the Congo River, is shrinking. So hunters have to chase the ferocious Nile crocodile instead. Their scaly bodies measure up to six meters and they often kill humans. Hunters in small boats go after them at night, shining a torch while striking the water. “The crocodile does not like that,” says Nyalowala. “He begins to twist and then comes to attack.” As the animal attacks, so do its pursuers, spearing it. A live crocodile fetches more than a dead one in the markets in Mbandaka, so hunters tie their jaws and transport them some 200km downstream. They sell for around $150 each.
A teacher at a state school, by comparison, earns around $170 a month, though many did not get paid at all last year. No wonder Nyalowala’s parents wanted him to follow in his father’s footsteps.
【语篇解读】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章讲述了Nyalowala的父母想让他继续以捕 杀鳄鱼为职业,而由于过度猎捕,刚果盆地中鳄鱼等野生动物正在减少。
4. Why are Nyalowala’s parents disappointed?
A. He was under pressure.
B. He abandoned his home.
C. He went against their will.
D. He disrespected his ancestors.
答案:C

Their son took a boat from their riverside village to the city of Mbandaka, in the heart of the Congo Basin rainforest, where he attended a teacher-training college. They wanted him to become a crocodile(鳄鱼) hunter, like his father and most of his ancestors.”可知, Nyalowala父母失望的原因是,他们想让Nyalowala继续捕鳄鱼,但是他却想当老师, 所以他违背了父母的意愿。故选C项。
5. What causes the popularity of hunting for bush meat?
A. Wild animals are endangered.
B. Bush meat trade is expanding.
C. Hunters’ number is increasing.
D. Old tradition makes a comeback.
答案:B
解析:细节理解题。根据第二段中的“More hunters are selling their prey(猎物) in markets, instead of eating it themselves. The trade has emptied out parts of the forest; almost 39% of it is at severe risk of over-hunting.”可知,猎人们现在捕猎不只是自己 吃,更主要的是在市场上卖掉,所以是市场需求的扩大导致猎杀的流行。故选B项。
6. What does the underlined word “ferocious” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Violent. B. Rare.
C. Expensive. D. Attractive.
答案:A
解析:词义猜测题。根据第三段中的“Over-hunting has made life more dangerous for crocodile hunters.”和“Their scaly bodies measure up to six meters and they often kill humans.”可知,尼罗河鳄鱼是非常凶猛和危险的,所以ferocious 在句中表示“凶猛 的”。故选A项。

Facing the growing digital economy and new positions incubated(孵化) in the sector such as deliverymen and live-streaming hosts, young people, especially those born after 2000, are expressing a stronger willingness for flexible work relations with companies, and also wish to become “digital workers” with flexible work locations and schedules.
A report from Peking University’s National School of Development released on Wednesday said that nearly 66 percent of surveyed employees born after 2000 prefer to work from home. The number is higher than surveyed people born after 1970, with about 54.4 percent of them preferring the new way.
“The Internet can do anything for me. I check emails from my clients and submit my proposals through WeChat, and then we discuss plans via teleconference. I love working from home actually,” said Mi Lu, a 28-year-old new media operator in Beijing. “It’s a much more convenient and cooler thing. We work everywhere, perhaps in a cafe, or on a bullet train or even on the table of a restaurant.”
Hu Jiayin, an associate professor in Peking University’s National School of Development, concluded that their survey shows that young people desire freedom in their jobs, but also wish for stability in their careers because of uncertainties brought by the fast-changing digital economy.
“But the development of the digital economy also brings great uncertainties and a sense of insecurity to the working population, so we’ve found some interesting things during our surveys that over 30 percent of job seekers we’ve surveyed wish to have a stable job at state-owned companies,” she added.
Li Qiang, vice-president of Zhaopin, said that the greatest risk to those seeking flexible work is whether the company pays the salary fully and on time. “It’s necessary for job seekers to set up a long-term development plan, rather than be shortsighted.” He added that companies may bear risks that flexible employees can’t deliver high-quality work in a limited time period, which requires the companies to establish a sound work delivery standard to help evaluate employee performance.

Endless queues and long waits at the ticket inspection desks at China’s major train stations were the signature of the Spring Festival travel rush before 2018.Every year, as the country’s biggest national holiday unfolded, a huge flow of travelers would leave staff at the check-in desks facing a dilemma.
But with the installment(安装) of artificial intelligence(AI) in dozens of train stations in 2018, including a facial recognition system which is able to process passenger identification within five seconds and therefore speed up the waiting process, busy scenes started to become something of the past.
When a passenger approaches the camera inside the facial recognition system at the station, it scans his face and then quickly compares it with the photograph shown on his identification card in real time. If the information matches, the barrier gates will open and allow the passenger to go through.
Such use of facial recognition technology is in line with discussions heard at the recent two sessions meeting, a key annual political event, which focused on the widespread application of a security network named Tianwang(“Sky Net” in English) currently being used by China’s public security department.
The network, according to reports by the People’s Daily, has the potential to recognise the facial features of anyone in the world and match them on the spot with photographs on a database of criminal suspects. In fact, it can analyse photographic identity so quickly that it can scan every single Chinese face on the planet in just one second, and it would only take two seconds to scan every face in the world, with an accuracy rate of up to 99.8 percent.
Those are just two examples that highlight the development of Chinese visual AI technology, which industry insiders predict could contribute to powerful growth in the global technology sector.

How to Feel Connected
A. Ask others what they need from you.
B. Sometimes you can feel isolated and distant from the ones you love.
C. Be brave to express your love.
D. Reach out to people to schedule a time to get together.
E. Attending family events, or simply visiting someone once a week can help to strengthen your relationship and keep it strong.
F. Targeting your efforts toward those issues allows you to close that distance more effectively.
G. You can have a gift delivered to friends on special occasions.
It’s easy to feel disconnected from what is going on around you in today’s fast-paced world. 16 You can get in touch and feel connected, however, by following the tips below:
Consider why you feel disconnected. Knowing what is making you feel disconnected can help you choose the best ways to address it. 17 Ask yourself these questions:Are you keeping yourself occupied with work too much? Do you rely on electronic communication instead of face-to-face communication? Do you lack friendships that are satisfying?
Interact with people in person. Technology is a great way to stay in touch, but sometimes you need to spend time with other people in person. 18 You can also take steps to feel more connected by making a small-talk with strangers who are sharing parts of your day.
19 Your loved ones could feel shy, so you may never know how to improve your relationship unless you ask the right questions. Asking them to open the doors can give you some insight on what you can do. Learning this information can help to strengthen your bond.
Show your commitment to them. Simply showing up and being there for your loved ones says a lot about how much you value your relationships. Putting in the time shows them that you are committed and want to stay connected. 20 .
Show appreciation. A simple “thank you” goes a very long way. Unfortunately, it is something that people who are close often take for granted. Telling someone you appreciate their time, love, and efforts can strengthen your bond and help you to become more connected.

【参考范文】
Dear Ryan,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3. I think it’s not a good idea to randomly pair up students for the spoken English training after class. The reasons are as follows.
To begin with, randomly pairing up students may lead to unbalanced language abilities within the groups. This can hinder the progress of students as the more advanced one may dominate the conversation, leaving little room for the other students to improve. Besides, students may feel uncomfortable or less motivated if paired with someone who they don’t get along with or have difficulty communicating with.
My suggestion is to group students based on their language abilities or to let students choose their own partners. This way, everyone can feel more comfortable practicing and improving their spoken English together.
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完 整的短文。
Mama and I spend mornings cleaning up the dirt that blows into our house. Mama says all the dust is due to the drought, not only here in the Oklahoma panhandle(狭长地带) but all over the Great Plains.
The dirt sifts into everything. It covers our clothes. We have to wash the dishes before each meal. It also slips into the automobiles horn(喇叭). Although Papa has fixed it, he fears the dust from the road will ruin the motor. So, we have to walk to school.
On the way to school, my sister, Faye, and I wear kerchiefs over our mouths so we don’t breathe in the dirt. On days when the air is so bad that they close the school, we stay at home and help Mama put sheets over the windows. But the dirt always finds a way in.
Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After church, Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started dinner. Faye and I played in the yard. The temperature suddenly dropped—it felt good. The heat had been building since dawn.
Then Mama shouted from the house, “Iris, you and Faye get inside. Be quick!”
I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust, like thick smoke pouring out from a chimney. All the birds flew away. “Faye, go with Mama!” I shouted, “I’ll warn Papa.”
Faye raced, toward the house. The storm hit so fast; I barely saw her climb the porch steps. Fine sand heaved against my face and in an instant the day turned into night. I stumbled over our bicycles left carelessly in the yard. I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back.
The dirt and sand stung my skin like a thousand bees. I needed to get to shelter. Covering my face with one hand, I felt my way toward the automobile and I opened the door. Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed. Papa was still out there! I needed to help him find the automobile. Worried as I was, I managed to calm myself down.

【参考范文】
I was figuring out what to do when I caught sight of the switch for the front lights and the horn. Immediately, I pressed the switch of the front lights. They made some rays, but would Papa see them in the thick darkness? Trembling violently, I pushed the horn again and again, hoping Papa would hear it. I was waiting silently in the automobile, but there was nothing except the wind. I became more and more desperate. Exhausted but persistent, I kept pushing the horn until I had no more strength.
Suddenly Papa’s face appeared at the window. With clothes covering his face, he opened the door and climbed onto the seat next to me. He coughed hard and wiped his eyes with dirty hands, then pulling me into his arms. I hugged Papa and cried. Papa asked, “Where is your mother and Faye?” I said, “They are in the house.” Papa nodded, “Good.” Finally, the huge black cloud of dust cleared off and the dirt started to settle. We went home, Mama and Faye rushing out to hug us. I cried tears of joy because our family had survived the horrible storm.
