Tessa woke to the sound of roaring snowplows (扫雪机). She jumped out of bed and rushed to the window. “Snow!” Tessa screamed with delight at seeing the white grassland, the white sidewalk, and the white car (which was actually red underneath the snow). It was the first snow Tessa could remember in a long, long time. She stuffed her feet into her slippers and dashed to the kitchen. Her nose caught the smell of banana pancakes before she slid to a stop in front of the wall calendar. Her fingers danced across the days and weeks before finding the right date: December 21.
“Oh!” Tessa gasped in awe as she read the words on the calendar. “The First Day of Winter... Mom! Today is the first day of winter!” exclaimed Tessa happily, jumping up and down.
Tessa’s mother peeked at the calendar. “So it is.”
“And it snowed!” exclaimed Tessa happily, jumping up and down.
“It sure did! And how fitting that we have snow on Old Man Winter’s birthday.”
“Whose birthday ” asked Tessa. “Old Man Winter’s.” Tessa’s mother pointed at the winter sky through the kitchen window. “He brings us winter each year, along with the snow.”
“Are we having a birthday party for him ” asked Tessa.
“That would be fun, wouldn’t it But no, sweetheart,” said Tessa’s mother, returning her attention to breakfast on the stove. “I’m just too busy today.”
Tessa frowned. No birthday party for Old Man Winter Everyone else gets to have a birthday party. It wasn’t fair! She still remembered the first time she saw a snowflake, such a delicate and beautiful crystal, which made her feel awed by the magic of nature. She has long expected to show her gratitude to the one who brought this to the world. “It’s the perfect opportunity, isn’t it ” Tessa’s frown gradually turned into a smile. She had a wonderful idea.

【答案】 After breakfast, Tessa phoned her best friends, Sarah and Andrew. “Meet me at the playground in fifteen minutes,” she told them. Arriving at the playground, Tessa found her friends already waiting there and grinned at the sight of her. She then told them everything about Old Man Winter. “Everyone deserves to be remembered and accompanied on their birthdays! Especially the best Old Man Winter who gave us plenty of joyful moments,” Tessa said in a thrilled tone. “Maybe we can celebrate it by making a snow birthday cake for him.” They all agreed with the least hesitation.
The three friends soon got to work. Sarah pushed all of the snow off the slide and piled it in the center of the playground while Andrew brushed the snow from the trees and added it to the pile. For decoration, Tessa stuck pine cones around the edges and sprinkled red berries on the sides. Soon, they finished a snow cake almost half as tall as Tessa. After they finished pushing the stick-candles, they all sang “Happy Birthday”. Tessa closed her eyes to make a wish for him— a wish for lots of snow— when a single sparkling snowflake floated down from a cloud and, so softly, kissed Tessa on the tip of her nose.

The ancient oak tree in the school courtyard served as the traditional “memories bank”. On the final day of senior year, students gathered to bury time capsules— letters to their future selves. Mia stood among them, clutching her sealed envelope with a heavy heart. Unlike others filled with hopes and dreams, hers contained a painful confession (忏悔) she had carried for three long years.
Her mind flashed back to the science lab, where her curiosity had led to disaster. Reaching the school’s antique microscope, she accidentally knocked it from the table. It broke into two parts. She quickly picked them up and put them together. At this moment, the door opened, revealing Ben, a quiet classmate, with Mr. Davies behind him. Ben came to fetch the microscope for an experiment. Hardly had he touched the microscope when it split into two parts.
To Mia’s astonishment, Ben quietly claimed responsibility. “I was moving it and it slipped,” he murmured, accepting the teacher’s disappointment that should have been hers. Mia watched in guilty silence as he bore the blame she deserved.
Now, watching Ben place his own letter in the hole and offer her a sad smile, Mia held the envelope tightly in her hand. The breeze rustled the oak leaves like whispering voices. She looked from the freshly dug earth to Ben’s figure, wondering if burying her truth was truly how she wanted to end her high school story.
Just as the dirt was about to cover the capsules, Mia suddenly stepped forward. “Wait!” she cried, her voice trembling but clear. All eyes turned to her. Her heart pounded wildly as she walked to the hole, took her unread note, and tore it open right there.

【答案】 Taking a deep breath, she read her confession aloud to the crowd. “I’m the one who broke the microscope. I was too scared to speak up then. I’m so sorry, Ben. I’m sorry, Mr. Davies.” Silence followed, and then Mr. Davies nodded slowly, a look of understanding rather than anger on his face.
After telling the truth, Mia felt a light tap on her shoulder. It was Ben. “That took a lot of courage,” he said. “I always knew it wasn’t me, but I could never prove it. Thank you for finally saying it.” He wasn’t smiling, but the weight in his eyes was gone. Thanks to the traditional “memories bank”, Mia realized that true courage didn’t come from hiding a mistake underground, but from bringing it into the light. Her greatest lesson learned under the old oak tree is that integrity is the most honest letter you can ever write to your future self.

3. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sunshine Valley High School was prepared to celebrate its 100th birthday, and the drama club planned a special play for it.
Mrs. Collins, the librarian, told them there might be old scripts in the library’s upper storage area. So on a cool November morning, several club members went to look. Among them were Mia, a junior who loved writing, Ethan, a senior who was good with cameras, and Lila, the club president who hoped to direct plays.
Mia reached for a dusty shelf. Suddenly, a loose page fell. It was a handwritten scene from a play called Starlight Dreams. Under the text was a note: “Act 2, Scene 3— Clara meets her future self under the oak tree (橡树), legs tired but eyes bright, determined to keep going even when the way forward gets hard to see...” It was signed by “Elena Marquez, 1972”. Mia saw a leather-bound notebook next to where the page had been and pulled it out— It was Elena’s diary.
They carefully opened the diary. One entry said, “July 5th, 1973. The doctor says I need to rest— no more late nights writing, no more rehearsals (排练). But I keep re-reading Clara’s lines: ‘You don’t stop just because the wind blows hard. Maybe one day, someone will finish what I started.'” They realized Elena, a former student, had gotten very sick and left school, never finishing her script.
Mrs. Collins came over, surprised. “Elena was a talented drama student. She had to leave school because of her illness and never came back. No one knew she left these here,” she said. The students felt sad for Elena. “We can finish her play for the school’s 100th birthday!” they all agreed.
For two weeks, they worked after school. Mia finished the script, still keeping Clara as the main character. Lila directed the actors in rehearsals, and Ethan made simple sets based on Elena’s notes. Mrs. Collins found Elena’s address from old yearbooks and invited her to watch the play.

【答案】 On the celebration day, the school hall was full of people. The play started. Clara, the main character, faced many problems, but she didn’t give up. The audience watched carefully, their eyes fixed on the stage. When Clara stood under the oak tree in the end, saying, “I’ll keep going, no matter how hard it gets”, everyone clapped hard. Suddenly, a voice shouted, “Good job!” It was Elena, sitting in the back row. Her eyes were shining with tears, and her hands were shaking. The applause got even louder as everyone turned to look at her.
Elena stood up and ran to the stage excitedly. “Thank you,” she said, voice shaking. “Those lines ‘determined to keep going even when the way forward gets hard to see’ are mine. I dreamed of acting in my own play, but the illness made me stop. I thought my story with Clara ended. However, you brought us both back.” She hugged each student, explaining that her dreams had revived. The students felt warm—they gave a forgotten dream a second chance, realizing small kindnesses bridge years, and that dreams, however long delayed, are always worth remembering.
