In the age of smartphones and social media (社交媒体), many teenagers spend most of their free time on their smartphones and computers. However, reading books still remains one of the most valuable activities for students, especially for ninth-graders.
First, reading books improves our language skills. Unlike short messages or social media posts (帖子), books have rich vocabulary and proper sentences. When we read, we learn new words and understand how to use them correctly. This helps us not only in exams but also in daily communication.
Second, reading broadens our horizons. Books cover all kinds of topics, such as history, science, and literature. By reading a history book, we can learn about ancient civilizations (文明) without traveling back in time. A science book can explain natural phenomena (现象) that we see in our daily lives. These experiences make us more knowledgeable.
Finally, reading helps develop critical thinking (批判思维). When we read a story or an argument, we need to follow the logic (逻辑) and understand the author’s ideas. We may even question some points and form our own opinions. This ability is very important for our studies and future life.
In conclusion, reading books is much more than a hobby. It is a key to improving ourselves. Let’s make reading a regular part of our lives.

Reading books is a valuable and lifelong activity that benefits people of all ages, from kids learning words to the elderly spending their free time. It shapes our thinking and brings lasting positive changes to our minds and lives.
First, reading improves vocabulary and language skills. When we read stories, news, or magazines, we meet new words and sentence structures. We learn to use them in writing and speaking without noticing. For example, a middle school student who reads one book monthly finds writing compositions (作文) easier than those who seldom read. This regular reading makes their language more lively, clear and reasonable, helping them stand out in exams and communication.
Second, reading is a “window to the world”. Through history books, we walk with ancient Egyptian rulers building pyramids (金字塔); through science books, we unlock stars’ secrets or how plants make food; through travel books, we imagine Japanese cherry blossoms or the Great Barrier Reef (大堡礁). These experiences open our eyes and make us more knowledgeable.
However, reading needs good habits. We should choose suitable books by age and interests—kids with picture books, high school students with classics. Also, avoid long reading without rest, as it harms eyes.
In short, reading is a treasure box of wisdom and joy. Keeping this habit makes our lives more colorful and meaningful.

When you learn a language, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. There are many advantages connected to reading, including:
Learning Vocabulary (词汇)
26 If there are too many new words for you, then the level is too high and you should read something simpler. But if there are at most five new words on each page, you will learn the vocabulary easily.
A Model for Writing
When you read, it gives you a good example for writing. 27 You can use them when you write.
Seeing Correct English
When people write, they usually use “correct” English with proper grammatical structures (结构). 28 So, by reading you see and learn grammatical English naturally.
Working at Your Own Speed
You can read as fast or as slowly as you like. You can read ten pages in 30 minutes, or spend one hour reading just one page. It doesn’t matter. 29 This is one of the big advantages of reading, because different people work at different speeds.
Personal Interest
If you choose something you like to read, it can actually be interesting and enjoyable. For example, if you like to read about football in your own language, why not read about football in English 30
In short, reading makes learning English natural and fun. Pick books you love, and your skills will grow easily.
A.This is not always true when people speak.
B.Try to remember as many words as you can.
C.You usually meet new words when you read.
D.The texts you read show you useful expressions.
E.But you can’t easily do this when speaking or listening.
F.Write them down in your notebook and review them often.
G.You will get information about football and improve your English at the same time.
It is believed that reading is not only good for our self-development but also quite easy to do. There are so many advantages to reading books.
Reading is a good way to deal with stress. In one study, reading was found to be helpful in cutting down stress. When you are reading books, you can keep the noisy world out and needn’t worry about the problems that bother you. This means that reading can help you feel relaxed.
Reading is good for brain health. If you read at least once a week, you probably have a better ability to understand at an old age than those who do not. When you are reading, you actually keep thinking and even imagining. And that is good exercise for your mind.
Reading is an excellent bedtime activity. On the one hand, reading before bed can help you fall asleep in a shorter time. On the other hand, it is better for your eyes to hold a book while going to bed instead of using your mobile phone.
All in all, there is no doubt that reading is good for you. Why not pick up a book to read right now

Some students say they don’t want to read for pleasure. They say they want to use their time to learn the rules of the language and new words. They say that pleasure reading is very easy.

①Aaron Whiteside, born in the 1980s, believes that life was better in the times gone by. He thinks that people were polite and nice in the 1930s but they are greedy (贪婪的) in modern society. But his friend thinks that living conditions have improved a lot and humans are still kind today. So what do you think
②Just like Aaron Whiteside, nostalgic people think people lived more happily with less in the past. In the old days, people sat around a table together, sharing food and conversations. But now most UK families spend about 20 minutes on supper before hurrying off. Families know less about each other’s lives. There is much more pressure on making a living.
③Besides, people bought fewer things in the past, which was better for the environment and made people more creative. For example, bands from the 1960s were much better than today’s. Creative expression is now being lost to technology and greed.
④ ▲ . In their opinion, both men and women are able to live the way they like now. However, women’s position was quite low in the past because they were expected to stay at home, looking after babies and doing a lot of housework. Most women led a boring life at that time.
⑤What’s more, it is agreed that children get better education today. That’s because there are more schools and colleges in modern society. Thanks to technology development, we live in a world where we share information, services and culture, and that gives us new perspectives (视角).

Distance Learning VS Face-to-Face Learning
Although many people think it is a modern phenomenon (现象), distance learning has been around for at least 200 years in one form or another. Historical examples of long-distance learning include students being sent a series of weekly lessons by mail. 1996 saw the founding of the world’s first “online university” in the United States, showing how far distance learning has come in a relatively short space of time. While it is now possible to get a large variety of online degrees, which is the best type of education to pursue (追求)
When comparing the two systems, the most obvious difference lies in the way that instruction is delivered (传递). Distance learning is heavily dependent on technology, especially the Internet. In a face-to-face course, students may only require a computer for the purpose of writing a paper. In comparison, when learning remotely, technology is the main means of communication. Face-to-face instructions must take place in real time and in one location, while distance learning can happen at any time and in any location. The flexibility (灵活性) this provides means that the students may be better able to learn at their own pace, but it may also mean that learners have to be well-organized and self-disciplined (自律的). In other words, they must be more highly motivated in order to do well in distance-learning courses. Finally, with face-to-face learning, teachers and students have the opportunity to develop a personal relationship. In an online classroom, teachers may seldom or never actually meet the students. This may make it hard for teachers to understand their students’ specific learning needs.
Although the nature of the teacher-student relationship may differ in the two methods, they do share the same key values. Just as a teacher is the “knower” in a classroom, he or she is the one responsible for helping students understand the key parts of an online course. The teacher needs to decide how to best present the material. He or she must also create the tasks for the course and help the students know what resources (textbooks, websites and so on) will best support their learning. Additionally, a teacher needs to provide students with feedback in some way. For example, a language teacher in a classroom may be able to correct a student’s grammar or pronunciation in the moment, while a distance-learning teacher may need to provide written or recorded feedback to be delivered later. In any case, all the usual elements (元素) of the teacher’s role are necessary, no matter what kind of instruction is being used.
It is difficult to state whether one form of learning is better than another. They are certainly different experiences. However, there are strong similarities between the two systems, which can both produce positive results. A student who has the choice should consider the advantages and disadvantages of each method before deciding to take a course.
64.The word “remotely” in Paragraph 2 probably means “________”.
A.by oneself B.with teachers C.in a classroom D.from a distance
65.Which of the following statements is about both distance learning and face-to-face learning
A.They can develop a strong student-teacher relationship.
B.They both depend heavily on technology.
C.They both can be an effective way of teaching.
D.They require a high level of motivation.
66.What is the best description of Paragraph 3
A.General summary and conclusions. B.Differences between the two methods.

67.According to the passage, the writer probably agrees ________.
A.students should consider carefully before choosing to learn online

The Manga-Anime Craze
Comics of all kinds are read around the world, but there is a craze for one particular type of comic. The name is called Manga, which is the Japanese word for comics, meaning “whimsical picture”. Manga is a mixture of foreign drawings and is most often in black and white, but the cover of the comic book and a few pages in the beginning may be colored. The main difference between Manga comics and the comics of Western countries is that Western comics tend to be orientated towards children, while Manga comics are geared towards people of all ages.
Almost all social classes and people of all ages in Japan read Manga comics, the popularity of the comics surging (急剧上升) after World War Ⅱ. Because of this, a broad range of subjects and topics—especially social and political themes—occur in Manga. Astro Boy, developed in 1951, is one example. Represented as both a shy, naive boy and super-powered robot, Astro Boy has a highly developed social conscience and has become an icon in Japan, representing a new world of peace and renunciation of war. He is also seen as representing the post World War Ⅱ Japanese person; more social and community oriented instead of blindly obedient (顺从的) as were many Japanese people when the Emperor reigned over their country.
The Manga craze has spread worldwide and it is now a global phenomenon (现象) bringing in billions of dollars each year. As a result, American artists are starting to develop comics along the lines of Manga, and these American-style Manga comics are called “Amerimanga”.
Manga also has a large number of female readers in the United States. In a nation where the US comic book readership is largely dominated (占据) by males, females make up 60% of all Manga readership because they are attracted to the romantic themes that are prevalent in some of the stories.
68.Manga comics are usually ________.

69.Manga is a comic drawing that has been around since ________.
A.the 1960s B.comic books were printed using colored inks
C.World War Ⅱ D.Japan became independent
70.What can we learn from the passage

B.Manga is popular among rich people.
C.Western comics tend to be more popular with adults, while Manga comics tend to be more popular with children.
D.The range of themes in Manga comics is very broad.
From very humble (卑微的) beginnings, Hans Christian Andersen became one of the world’s best-loved storytellers. “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, “Thumbelina”, and “The Ugly Duckling” are the titles of children’s stories that should ring a bell with all of us. His 156 different stories are the most translated fiction (小说) in history. Even now, over 200 years after his death, his stories are being told and retold all over the world.
Andersen was born in a one-room house in Odense, Denmark on April 2, 1805. His father was a shoemaker and his mother had been a washerwoman before she married Hans’ father. As for the facts about his family, Andersen wrote much about them in his autobiography (自传) . His father died when Hans was only eleven years old. Young Andersen was wasting his time in school, daydreaming about the theater and the stories he would imagine. His mother sent him to work in a tailor’s shop and later a tobacco factory to help support the family. Unhappy with these jobs, he left home at the age of 14 to seek his fortune in Copenhagen. He nearly starved (挨饿) to death trying to earn a living as an artist, actor, dancer and singer.
Jonas Collin, a director of the Royal Theater and an influential government official, noticed Andersen when he was 17. Collin had read one of Andersen’s plays and saw that the young man had talent. Collin sent him to a school near Copenhagen and finally arranged private tutoring (私人教师) in Copenhagen. In 1828, at the age of 23, Andersen entered the university in Copenhagen. Andersen began to publish stories in Denmark in 1829. In 1833, the king gave him travel money and he spent 16months traveling through Germany, France, Switzerland and Italy. As Andersen traveled, he wrote many books about his experiences. Andersen wrote three different books about his own life. Some of his plays were big hits in Denmark and Danish children still sing some of his poems set to music. His best-known stories were published between 1835 and 1850. Some are his own creations and others are his retelling of previously known Danish folk tales (民间故事) .
Andersen considered himself ugly all his life. He was tall and thin with a long nose. It was this self-view that inspired “The Ugly Duckling”. Andersen proposed to (求婚) several women during his life and was refused by all of them. In spite of his lonely life, he was able to create some of the most wonderful stories ever written. Andersen died on August 4, 1875.
