In February 1950, Hua Luogeng, a famous Chinese mathematician (数学家), wrote an open letter to all Chinese students studying in the US while he was returning to China. The letter moved many people and showed the strong patriotism (爱国精神) of many overseas (海外的) Chinese scientists who were willing to return to their homeland.
The documentary (纪录片) Return tells the story of many scientists who decided to go back to China in the 1950s. “It not only focuses on their historical backgrounds but also shows their feelings and a deep sense of patriotism,” said Li Zheng, the documentary’s director.
Return shares many little-known stories of these scientists. In Hua’s case, many people don’t know how important his work was in the early development of computer science in China. In March 1950, Hua left his job at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study and returned to China. At a time when few people knew about computers, Hua already understood their influences on scientific progress. The next year, he became the director of the Institute of Mathematics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and set up China’s first computer research team. Li said Hua’s story moved him. “Hua was more than just a mathematician. He had big ideas and was very brave, especially for his time.”
Talking about the influence of Return on young people, Li said, “I hope teenagers will learn more about history from this documentary and be encouraged by the spirit of these scientists. Today’s young people live in a well-off society, but we must never forget the achievements of those who came before us.”
6.What did Hua’s open letter mainly show
A.His maths achievements in the world.
B.His teaching methods in maths.
C.His travel experiences around the world.
D.His strong love for his motherland.
7.When did Hua leave Princeton University
A.In January 1951. B.In March 1950.
C.In February 1950. D.In March 1949.
8.What can we learn about Hua from Li’s description in Paragraph 3
A.He was too old to remember anything. B.He disliked what he owned in the USA.
C.He wanted to study computers in China. D.He was far-sighted and had a strong will.
9.What is the purpose of the documentary Return
A.To explain how computers can work so well.
B.To compare China with the USA in the 1950s.
C.To honor scientists’ patriotism and achievements.

During the past one hundred years, there have been many inventions (发明物) that make our life much easier and more interesting. TV is one of them. Many people enjoy watching TV for fun. Some even believe that TV has made their children clever because there are all kinds of information on it—news, sports, music and language. Children can learn a lot from TV in a short time without going out. Many parents are happy about this because they themselves are too busy to spend time with their children.
But we have found that more and more children today have problems with reading, thinking and concentrating (集中注意力) even though they have watched a lot of TV. In fact, getting much information from TV does not mean real learning. Children who watch too much TV do not have enough time to think. What children need most is their parents. The letter shows that Xiao Hong missed her brother so much and had great hopes for his future.
“Every letter opens another world for us, ” said Guan Zhangwen, the director of the TV show. “It seems that we can experience the real lives and feelings of the writers.” Since its first episode on December 5, 2016, Letters Alive has been widely praised. Many audiences (观众) say that it has provided a breath of fresh air to today’s TV shows.
Besides Letters Alive, some other cultural TV shows have also attracted (吸引) Chinese audiences. The BBC is famous for its nature shows, but it has only recently done one about Asia. This seven-part new documentary series, called Asia, takes viewers across its beautiful natural world. Matthew Wright is one of the show's producers. 43
Why did you want to make this series
The BBC made a great series called Seven Worlds One Planet five years ago. Only one of the episodes was about Asia, and that was nowhere near enough. Our team decided to fill that gap. 44 We are really happy with our work.
45
The opening scene is amazing. It shows grey reef sharks chasing a group of Moorish idols. Our team was the first in the world to film this scene. We put some lively music to it, and that's a good start to a great story.
Were there any interesting stories during filming
For one episode, we went to Xizang to film the chiru. We didn't find any at first. One day, our cameraman, Jacky Poon, saw a wolf and followed it. It was the wolf that finally found the chiru. It chased them for hours before hunting the most tired one down. 46 We were lucky.
What can viewers learn from this series
I hope viewers will see Asia in a new way. 47 I hope Asia's natural beauty is top of mind when people talk about nature in the future.

The first one is China in Classics on CCTV-1 and it started to be on in February, 2021. This programme is mainly to help people know more about great Chinese books. Some great actors are invited to act the stories behind some books so that audiences can understand the books better.
Another purpose of this programme is to encourage people to read more good books. The famous host named Sa Beining acts a reader now and he goes back to ancient China to interact with the writers of the books in the programme. Deke Duncan is not an ordinary DJ. He’s 73 years old and has spent the last 44 years hosting a radio show from his garden shed to a rather small audience.
In 1974, Deke Duncan created his own radio station in his garden shed. He used high-quality equipment to get that professional radio sound. This was well before the days of the Internet. The only way to reach people with a radio show was by broadcasting it on radio waves. To do this, you needed a licence. Without one, he couldn’t broadcast it anywhere outside his house. However, that didn’t stop him from following his passion. Every weekend, his radio played pop songs and local news to only one person: his wife! His dream was to one day share his radio show with his home town, Stevenage. With only one listener, it seemed unlikely.
44 years later, this dream is going to come true. BBC Three Counties, a local radio station for Stevenage and the nearby area, heard of his story. They decided to give him his own one-off radio show. Deke Duncan will have a one-hour show over Christmas, playing not just to Stevenage, but to three counties. “This feels really nice. For the first time in my life, I’m speechless,” he told listeners on the BBC Three Counties radio station.
Even though he has moved to Stockport, Deke has still kept his radio station going. He has hosted the show with friends and still broadcasts for his family. It just goes to show that a lifelong dream can come true if you work for it and keep going, even if it does take 44 years!

The farming TV program Believe in the Land has been winning the hearts of its young audiences. It has received over 30 thousand comments on Douban and has got 8.9 points out of 10.
In the show, 10 young people get together as a team. They must work hard for 190 days on a 9.5 hectare farm to grow 25,000 kilograms of crops.
This is China’s first farming-themed show. Before this, the British farming show Clarkson’s Farm was popular among Chinese audiences. Clarkson, a rich man with no farming experience, ran his farm with funny and changing ideas. It made people laugh and showed the challenges of farming. Believe in the Land shares something similar by showing the farming experiences of 10 young people.
Some other “slow TV programs” also show famous people living in the county side. But Believe in the Land stands out as it shows not only the beauty of countryside life, but also the hard work behind it.
The young people started from zero to make their own tools and furniture. They lived in a small, old house near the fields, wore dirty clothes in the mud and worked for a whole day.
“Although the young people didn’t do it perfectly, their experience of working in the muddy fields and unloading tons of fertilizer (肥料) moves the audiences,” wrote an internet user on Douban. “Watching their hard work makes me understand the saying ‘you reap what you sow (一分耕耘,一分收获)’ more than ever,” another audience wrote on Sina Weibo.
70.Why does Believe in the Land stand out among the farming shows
A.Because it makes people laugh and shows the challenges of farming.
B.Because it tries to teach young people many farming experiences.

D.Because it is much better than the British one.
71.What is the young people’s life like in the show
A.They live in a big old house near the fields.
B.They have to work almost all day long.

D.They don’t need to make the tools and furniture by themselves.

D.The show is touching and can make people think deeply.
73.What’s the purpose of this passage

Singer 2024, a talent show, started on May 10. The show chose to perform live without any editing (修音), which has caused a lot of discussion. It showed the difference between Chinese music industry and the rest of the world.
