The Metropolitan Museum’s introduction to Night-Shining White
A leading horse painter of the Tang dynasty, Han Gan was known for capturing not only the likeness of a horse but also its spirit. This painting, the most famous work attributed to the artist, is a portrait of a charger (战马) of Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712–56). With its burning eye, flaring nostrils, and dancing hoofs, the fiery-tempered horse epitomises /i'pit maiz/(是...的典范) Chinese myths about Central Asian “celestial steeds(神马)” that “sweated blood” and were actually dragons in disguise.
这匹性情暴躁的马,怒目圆睁,鼻孔张开,马蹄飞舞,是中国神话中中亚“神马”的缩影,这些“汗血”宝马实际上是中国龙的化身。

Han Gan, a well known artist in Tang Dynasty, is famous for his horses. He had his talent discovered by Wang Wei accidentally, who sponsored Han Gan to study painting and introduced him to a master. It was his talent and efforts that helped him serve the then emperor—Xuan Zong.
Han Gan broke away from the traditional way by drawing according to his observation. He frequently visited the stable or even lived with the stable workers for a long time, which enabled him to get inspiration from the movement of the horses.
Han Gan's works were highly valued because he highlighted the inner spirit and strength as well as the physical features through the burning eyes, bared teeth and kicking hooves. So vivid were the horses that it seemed as if they would gallop off the paper.
