Giant bumper car
Dan Hryhorcoff from Pennsylvania, US, built a bumper car legal (合法的) for the road. The car is about 4 meters long, twice the size of a children’s bumper car. The car has a motorcycle wheel at the front. The single wheel means it can turn very sharply. Making the car has brought Hryhorcoff a lot of joy. When this blue bumper car hits the road, it will make everyone laugh.
_______________________ Check out this Wind Tree! It looks like a tree with 36 green “leaves”, but it’s a small wind turbine (涡轮机). It’s about 5 to 10 meters tall and easy to build. Each “leaf” can turn with the wind and create electricity. It can make 18,000 kilowatt-hours of energy in a year. That’s enough to power a house of four people.
Driving through to charge cars
Drivers usually need to wait for a long time for their electric cars to charge (充电). Now, a road in the US can charge electric cars as they drive along the road or park on it. There are charging coils (线圈) under the road, and the cars have special receivers. When the car comes near, the coils send electricity through a magnetic field (磁场). It’s safe for people and animals to walk on the roads.

On a sunny Saturday morning, Mia was in her backyard with a bright smile. Today was perfect for trying out her latest invention — the Flower Watering Robot. She was excited to see if it could really water the garden by itself. She turned the robot on and watched as it started moving among the flowers. It was working!
Just then, a group of kids from her school walked by and saw her invention. Frank, the tallest among them, stepped forward and turned the robot off.
“What is this ” he asked.
“It’s my Flower Watering Robot. It helps water plants by itself.” Mia explained.
The kids laughed, “Who needs a robot to water plants ” Frank picked up the robot and set it aside rudely before they all walked away.
Mia felt sad as she picked up her robot. “Maybe Frank is right... Who would really use this ” she wondered, feeling discouraged.
Suddenly, she heard a voice. “Hey, are you okay ” It was Mr. Jackson, her neighbor. He noticed the robot and asked, “What’s this interesting thing ”
Mia brightened up a bit. “It’s my Flower Watering Robot. I built it myself to help with gardening...” Mr. Jackson was amazed. “That’s amazing! You’re so creative. Don’t let those kids get you down. Keep inventing, and you’ll make something wonderful!”
“And guess what I run a local science fair,” he continued. “I think your robot is great. I can see it winning a prize!”

Think about things around you when you get up in the morning: the alarm clock, toothbrush, toilet, coffee maker, and shower heads... ★ YES! They are all inventions. They come in all shapes, sizes, and varieties. And their inventors were from different backgrounds. Sure, many scientists have made discoveries and turned those discoveries into inventions. However, that doesn’t mean you must be a scientist to be an inventor.
We often hear that necessity is the mother of invention, and it means that people often identify one of their needs and then try to meet that need. Sometimes the only way to meet that need is to invent a new product!
Think about all of the musical instruments in the world. Now think of all the products that go along with those instruments. Instead of scientists, many of those products were invented by musicians. They discovered a need and then invented a product to satisfy it. They may have thought scientifically about the product. They may have had help from a scientist, but many people have shown that inventors can come from any background.
Non-scientific approaches (与科学无关的方法) can help develop new inventions. Although thinking scientifically is often a necessity, it can also be helpful to think out of the box. We often get used to doing things the same way and thinking that some ideas won’t work, which makes us stop thinking about new things. But if we keep thinking, we might discover something amazing. That is why some inventors can come from a variety of non-scientific backgrounds. For example, a poet and an astronomer (天文学家) both look at the sky, but they see it differently. The poet might have ideas about a problem the astronomer would never consider. See You don’t have to be a scientist to be an inventor. Somehow, everyone can invent something.
