Last Friday evening, one concerned mom on a Mom’s Facebook group said that her husband did not want to buy their son a new schoolbag and other supplies, as his old ones were still in good condition. She said, “Every year of my life as a kid, I got new school supplies, so did all the other kids in my class. I just thought this seemed normal. Is that what people do here I don’t want my son to be made fun of.”
That last line made me question my parenting skills as I realized it was a good three years since my daughter had had a new schoolbag. I hurried to check the state of her bag and felt relaxed to see it hadn’t been worn out. I wasn’t sure about the state of her classmates’ schoolbags, though. Did they make fun of her in school I felt I had failed as a mother by overlooking such an important part of social belonging.
I went back to the Facebook post and was surprised to find the post had over 200 comments in less than an hour. Some criticized the poor mother’s behavior. Others took the opportunity to shine and show how environment-friendly they were for reusing the same supplies over 2/3 years. A few others pointed out that their kids only used hand-me-downs from other families.
Happy at the thought that I wasn’t such a bad mother after all, I decided to become a kind and generous one and told my daughter I was treating her to a new schoolbag. “I’m cool with mine, Mom. It’s good to go for a few years. Save your money,” she said! Maybe I should take some parenting tips from her.

Strange events in the sky, such as speeding lights or flying objects, which cannot be explained are called UFOs. Some people believe they could be a sign of aliens.
Many people think there are intelligent life forms in the universe (宇宙) other than humans. However, millions of pounds have been spent searching for aliens and no one has found proof (证据). Some people think it is a waste of money and people’s skills. So, is searching for aliens worth the money and effort Here are two different voices.
It’s a mystery that needs to be solved. “Are humans alone in the universe ” is a question that has inspired centuries of debate (辩论), dating back thousands of years and at least as far as the ancient Greeks. It is a question that has inspired hundreds of books and films, which shows how important it is to people. If someone sees a UFO, we need to find out what it is. Scientists searching for aliens could create new technologies and these could do good to Earth. For example, the small, lightweight camera on phones was developed so astronauts could take photos in space. Plus, if we were to discover aliens, we might be able to share knowledge with each other and create friendships across the universe.
★ . There are many important problems here on Earth — such as climate (气候) change. People should focus energy on these rather than searching the universe for aliens that might not even exist (存在).Many people have spent lots of money trying to find signs of alien life and there is no result. Videos of flashing lights and strange objects in the sky might make good stories but in fact there is probably a reasonable explanation, such as a dirty mark on the camera lens (镜头). Besides, if aliens do exist, they will probably
find us first so we might as well stop wasting our energy on them and spend it making Earth a better place to live.
