When Mae Jemison was eight, she stood in the courtyard of her home, looking at the night sky. The stars shone like tiny candles. “I’m going to dance among them,” she said softly.
At school, Mae loved both science and art. One day, when her teacher showed the class pictures of planets, Mae noticed they were all gray. “Space isn’t just gray,” she argued. She took out her paintbox and splashed (溅泼) reds, purples, and golds across her paper. Her classmates laughed, but her teacher hung the painting on the wall. “Color can change how we see the universe,” she said.
Years later, Mae studied chemical engineering and learned how to build rockets. Still, every night, she painted bright gas cloud on large canvases (画布). One evening, a NASA recruiter (招聘人员) saw her paintings in a small gallery. He was surprised that a scientist could see space in color and invited her to apply for astronaut training.
In 1992, Mae Jemison became the first African-American woman to travel around Earth. From the shuttle (航天飞机) window, she saw the Milky Way across the darkness—exactly the colors she had painted as a child. Walking along Shenzhen Bay at dusk, you may see a silver, fish-shaped machine moving above the waves. Nicknamed the Sea-Broom, this robot cleaner is Shenzhen’s newest tool against floating plastic. Built by a local tech team, each unit collects rubbish and sends information on water quality to a phone app.
Shaped like a one-metre tuna (金枪鱼), the “fish” is driven by a quiet solar tail. One Sea-Broom can collect 15 kg of litter in five hours, about the weight of a schoolbag. During a three-week project, ten machines removed 35 tonnes of rubbish. In addition to cleaning up trash, the robot records temperature every minute.
Why does it look like a tuna Engineers copied the streamlined ( 流线型) body to cut water resistance (阻力) by 30%, saving battery power and increasing speed to 1.4 m/s. The stable shape also allows it to work better in windy weather. What’s more, a special paint is used to stop weeds from growing, which can keep the outside clean and reduce work.
Li Mei, a high-school student, led a team and designed the phone app. “I want the sea we see every day to stay blue,” said the 15-year-old girl. When the basket is 90% full, the robot returns to shore automatically(自动地). The city will put 100 more Sea-Brooms into use by 2026 and invite students from Hong Kong to join the design team. Officials (官员) believe that keeping a clean bay will benefit generations to come.
16. What is the main function of the Sea-Broom
A. To study the fish in Shenzhen Bay.
B. To clean up rubbish and collect data.
C. To test the new water quality apps.
D. To provide solar power for the city.
17. How much litter can one Sea-Broom collect in ONE hour
A. 3kg. B. 5 kg. C. 15kg. D. 35 tonnes.
18. What does the underlined word “stable” mean
A. Firm. B. Quick. C. Soft. D. Heavy.
19. Why do engineers copy the tuna-shaped body
A. Because it helps the robot attract more real fish in the Bay.
B. Because it makes the robot look more beautiful and natural.
C. Because it allows the robot to carry more rubbish at a time.
D. Because it helps the robot move faster and save energy.
20. What can we infer from the passage
A. The Sea-Broom needs to be cleaned by people very often.
B. Li Mei designed the Sea-Broom phone app all by herself.
C. The project will add more robots and student designers.
D. Officials believe the project will bring short-term benefits.
C
For many students, busy weeknights often result in late bedtimes and not enough sleep. Many try to “catch up” on sleep during the weekend, but does this way really work Scientists have been looking into this common habit.
A recent study followed two groups of adults over several weeks. One group had limited (有限的) sleep on weekdays but could sleep freely on weekends. The other group got enough sleep every night. The results showed that while sleeping more on weekends helped a little, the group with a regular sleep schedule still performed better on attention and memory tests. More importantly, the “catch-up” group showed worse ability to digest (消化) food, which could harm health over time.
The problem lies in our circadian rhythm (昼夜节律), which needs regularity. When we completely change our sleep schedule on weekends—it’s like giving our body clock jet lag (飞行时差). By doing so, people will find it harder to fall asleep on Sunday night and often get more tired on Monday morning, also known as the “Monday blues.”
So, what should we do Sleep experts say that it’s okay to sleep a bit longer on weekends, but avoid extreme changes. Try not to differ your wake-up time by more than two hours from your weekday schedule. A short nap during the day can also help refresh your mind without affecting nighttime sleep.
In conclusion, weekend sleep can provide some short-term relief ( 轻松), but it is not a true solution for ongoing sleep loss. The healthiest habit is to keep a regular and enough sleep schedule throughout the week.
21. How does the writer start the passage
A. By telling a story. B. By providing an answer.
C. By raising a question. D. By listing a cause.
22. What was the main finding about the “catch-up” sleep group
A. They did much better on memory tests.
B. They were healthier than the other group.
C. They found it easy to wake up on Monday.
D. They could not digest food as well.
23. What can we learn about “Monday Blues”
A. It makes people feel more energetic and active on Monday.
B. It is connected to our body clock with a jet-lag feeling.
C. It comes from the trouble of falling asleep on Friday night.
D. It is mainly caused by having difficult tests on Monday.
24. What does the sleep expert recommend us to do in paragraph 4
A. Keep the weekend wake-up time within 2 hours of weekdays.
B. Sleep as long as possible on weekends to make up for lost sleep.
C. Change the sleep schedule completely on weekends to rest better.
D. Avoid napping during the day to ensure good nighttime sleep.
25. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage
A. [Question] → [Evidence] → [Explanation] → [Story] → [Conclusion]
B. [Problem] → [Cause] → [Effect] → [Solution] → [Prediction]
C. [Opinion] → [Example 1] → [Example 2] → [Example 3] → [Summary]

A. In this way, families grow closer and communities become kinder. B. The benefits for children’s development are also noteworthy. C. The most important one is that it brings family members closer together. D. Some people argue that families should spend weekends resting at home. E. It provides a shared purpose that connects all family members. F. This shows a change from self-focused activities to community engagement (参与).
In recent years, a growing number of families have started participating in volunteer activities during their weekends. Instead of going shopping or watching movies, they choose to clean up parks, visit nursing homes, or help at community centers. 26
There are several important reasons why family volunteering is so valuable. 27 In today’s fast-paced world, family members often spend most of their time on separate activities—parents are busy with work while children focus on schoolwork and mobile phones. Volunteering together creates opportunities for more communication. 28 When family members work side by side to achieve a common goal, they build a better understanding of each other.
29 Through various volunteer activities, children not only learn practical skills but also develop important qualities. For instance, when helping to organize a community book fair, children learn planning and communication skills.
Family volunteering creates a positive cycle that benefits both the family and the community.
30 This special experience will grow into a family tradition that everyone values.
