I'm Mary. I still remember the first day when I came to the junior middle school two years ago. How nervous I felt! Introduction
Body language is different from culture to 1 culture. The following tips may help you when you travel to other countries.
Tips
Mind how you meet and greet.
Americans and Canadians greet each other with a strong handshake. In some Asian countries, the polite way of greeting is to bow. And the lower you bow, the deeper respect you have for the person you are bowing to.
Be careful of your smile. Americans smile when they meet or greet someone. South Koreans, however, think it’s rude for grown-ups to smile in public. To them, it is a sign of embarrassment (尴尬).
Don’t point. In many countries, people think it’s very rude to point at others with a finger. Americans usually point with their chins (下巴) instead. And Chinese often use the whole hand to point.
Give the right amount of space. Americans like to have enough space when talking with others. And they care about personal (私人的)space more widely than people in most other cultures.

Body language is quiet and secret. It speaks more than words. According to the scientists, our bodies send out more messages than we realize. In fact, body language takes up about 50% of what we really mean.
Body language is especially (尤其)important when we try to communicate across cultures. But it is not often realized. And it may lead to misunderstandings (误解).For example, different countries treat (对待) the distance between people differently.
Northern Europeans usually do not like having body contact even with friends, certainly not with strangers. People from Latin American countries, on the other hand, touch each other quite a lot. Therefore, misunderstandings may happen in conversations. It may look like a Latino is following a Norwegian all over the room. The Latino, trying to express friendship, will keep moving closer. The Norwegian, probably seeing this as rude, will keep backing away — which the Latino will in return regard as coldness.
Clearly, people may express a lot when communicating with others. Spoken language can help the speaker express his / her feelings. When people from different cultures communicate with each other, there will be more misunderstandings. Whatever, the best advice is to obey the rule: treat others as you would like to be treated.
( )41. How much does body language take up of what people really mean in communication? A. About 25%.

C. Make. D. Break.
