Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history. Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food or for sports. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the Earth forever. Hundreds more are in danger today. About 170 kinds of animals in the United States alone are thought in danger.
Why should people cane? Because we need animals, and because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful or interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance (平衡) of nature. Destroying (摧毁) one kind of animal can cause many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (老鹰),the farmers’ stores of com and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice increased quickly.
Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people "know about the problem. And they try to let the governments pass laws to protect animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws keep people from killing any animal or plant on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

Would a mouse be a good pet for us? There is no easy answer to this question, as it depends on the kids, the family and what they want to get from the family’s pet. If kids want something they can control a lot and play with, pet mice may not be the best choice, as they are small and they can run very quickly if they get scared. If your kids are quiet and patient, it could probably work — pet mice can be controlled but they need a gentle (温和的) touch and sometimes a lot of patience if they are not very tame (驯服的). So if you want to get pets, mice may not be the best for little kids to control.
However, if your family is looking for pets to watch rather than control, a pair or group of female (雌性的) mice can be a great choice, as they are fun to watch and not too difficult to care for.
I recommend getting more than one mouse to be your pets because the mouse looks much happier when it lives with other mice. A pair of female mice usually get along well with each other. Male (雄性的) mice may sometimes fight with each other, so many of them may need to be separated. What’s more, male mice are often a bit smellier (难闻的) than female mice, so females are a better choice for kids.
( )41. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Kids should not keep mice as pets.
B. Why many families don’t keep mice.
C. How to make pet mice tame.
D. Why mice are not the best pets for little kids.
( )42. What qualities (品质) does a kid need when having a pet mouse?
A. Cute and patient.
B. Quiet and patient.
C. Clever and smart.
D. Smart and positive.
( )43. What does the underlined word “recommend” mean?
A. Advise. B. Imagine.
C. Operate. D. Remind.
( )44. How many reason(s) did the writer give us to choose female mice as pets for kids?
A. One. B. Two.
C. Three. D. Four.
( )45. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How to keep pet mice.
B. Why we should choose mice as pets.
C. How to choose mice as pets.
D. Differences between female and male mice.
