I used to be the most devoted resolution-maker. Every January 1st, I would set ambitious goals like losing 50 pounds, running a marathon, or becoming the perfect parent who never got angry. Yet, I never accomplished them. By February or March, my willpower faded, and I fell back into old habits. Every winter, I’d feel guilty and ashamed, looking back at all of the amazing things I didn’t do.
Everything changed when I was diagnosed (诊断) with two different cancers — breast and appendix cancer — almost at the same time. The following year was incredibly difficult, but it reshaped my perspective entirely. What I once considered “success” shifted: simply being alive with my family felt like a success. That’s when I decided I was done with New Year’s resolutions.
I realized that you don’t need January 1st to start over — every day offers a chance for a fresh beginning. You can make the day you decide to be a better person a special day, regardless of what the calendar says. My old approach of dreaming big without practical steps set me up for failure. Now, I take the opposite approach: I focus on small, manageable goals. Instead of aiming for a marathon, I run 20 minutes, three days a week, at whatever pace I like. Every time I check one of my mini goals off my list, I feel proud and a sense of accomplishment. It’s a great feeling, and I don’t have to wait until the end of the year to experience it!
Nearly losing my life taught me its preciousness. I no longer want to waste a minute on guilt. Cancer gave me a sense of purpose and motivated me to find a better way to feel successful. I haven’t given up on becoming a better person. But I’ve learned that there are much better ways to improve and grow than through New Year’s resolutions.
4. What was the author like before her cancer diagnosis
A. She had a gentle character. B. She achieved personal goals.
C. She showed no interest in sports. D. She couldn’t maintain motivation.
5. What does the underlined word “perspective” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Personality. B. Hobby. C. Status. D. Viewpoint.
6. What kind of changes did cancers bring to the author
A. She became an ideal parent. B. She valued highly her time.
C. She went on running marathon. D. She relied on detailed schedules.
7. Why does the author write this text
A. To teach us to set small goals. B. To persuade us to care for health.
C. To tell us to get rid of bad habits. D. To remind us to accompany family.
C
An innovative virtual reality (VR) sports program, using advanced artificial intelligence (AI), has shown encouraging results in fighting against teen obesity (肥胖). For eight weeks, nearly 180 overweight or obese Chinese teenagers, who were born in the digital age, took part in a virtual coaching program involving table tennis and soccer. The new VR sports initiative is part of China’s efforts to prevent teen obesity by using the most advanced AI technology.
Teen obesity has become a global public health crisis. China is now prioritizing dealing with teen obesity in its public health initiatives. Faced with this challenge, some scientists are investigating whether VR technology can help digitally-native teenagers reach weight-loss goals safely and effectively.
An international research team led by scientists from Shanghai Jiao Tong University developed REVERIE the world’s first intelligent VR sports interactive system. Professor Li Wei, a lead health scientist on the project, explained: “We created a transformer-based AI coach, trained using deep reinforcement learning, which provides real-time feedback and adapts to individual performance.”
In the eight-week trial, participants were divided into groups engaging in either real-world sports, namely table tennis or soccer, VR-based versions of the same sports, or a control group with no additional exercise. Participants outside the control group received exercise intervention (干预) sessions three times a week, in addition to their regular physical education classes at school.
Encouragingly, REVERIE has demonstrated significant potential in helping overweight and obese teens lose weight, improve cognitive (认知的) function, and maintain long-term exercise motivation. Both VR and real sports groups showed similar fat loss, with VR users experiencing additional cognitive benefits according to the study. Especially, the VR group maintained higher exercise motivation six months after the trial.
Professor Chen Lin, the project’s principal investigator, emphasized, “REVERIE offers a promising solution to physical inactivity. These digital workouts can help overcome barriers like low engagement and social anxiety.” The research team plans to expand the use of VR technology to encourage healthier lifestyles among teens, supporting global health efforts to improve youth well-being.
8. What is the main purpose of the program
A. To bring attention to public health issue. B. To find out the effectiveness of VR sports.
C. To explore the causes of teen overweight. D. To promote sports activities among teenagers.
9. What does REVERIE feature
A. A transformer-based AI coach. B. An instant user feedback system.
C An updated version of VR game. D. A group exercise training method.
10. What did the research results prove
A. Extra exercise is insufficient. B. VR exercise has a lasting impact.
C. Regular PE classes are limited. D. Real sports can improve memory.
11. What can we infer from Professor Chen’s words
A. Teen obesity is becoming worse. B. REVERIE needs to be improved.
C. REVERIE is helpful for teenagers. D. Digital workouts face many barriers.

Rows of distinctive red seats could be seen lining along the pathways between exhibition halls at the 2025 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS), held at Shougang Park in Beijing. These same seats had recently witnessed a major national event on September 3rd, which filled countless Chinese people with great pride. Rather than being stored or thrown away, the chairs were repurposed for continued public use, allowing people to interact with them directly.
Designed for comfort and sustainability, the seats feature automatic recovery working mode and are made from UV-resistant materials to help them remain their vivid colours over time. They are available in three elegant shades — gold, red, and olive green — combining artistic appeal with practical function in a way that reflects unique national influences.
After the events concluded, nearly 50,000 seats were spread across Beijing in a carefully organized effort. Liu Feifei, director of the urban renewal department at Beijing Shougang Construction Group, said, “Shougang Park received 1,508 of the seats. Matching perfectly with the park’s unique style, where industrial heritage meets modern fashion, these seats add new value to the park and will continue to serve the public in the future.” At Tongzhou Forest Park, rows of red seating now offer visitors comfortable resting places along tree-lined paths.
These active measures for relocation of those seats extended across various areas: Beijing Investment Group received over 2,000 seats for use in sports and community grounds; the Municipal Forestry and Parks Bureau assigned more than 4,700 green seats to parks; and the Education Commission donated 9,000 red seats to schools throughout the city. In addition, full viewing areas were delivered to sports facilities and public spaces in different districts.
This large-scale (规模) reuse project highlights Beijing's commitment to sustainable event management. It successfully transforms memorial items into lasting public resources, extending the life of high-quality materials across the city’s communities. This measure not only promotes sustainability but also continues to serve residents in diverse urban spaces.
12. How can we describe the seats according to Paragraph 2
A. Functional and sustainable. B. Colourful yet unpractical.
C. Artistic and multipurpose. D. Comfortable yet unappealing.
13. What can we know from Liu Feifei’s words in Paragraph 3
A. These seats are only used as artworks. B. Shougang Park received most of the seats.
C. The seats match well with Shougang Park. D. More activities will be held at Shougang Park.
14. Which paragraphs present the large-scale reuse of seats
A. Paragraph 1&2. B. Paragraph 2&3.
C. Paragraph 3&4. D. Paragraph 4&5.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Red Seats Witnessed a Grand Event B. Large-scale Reuse Project Is Underway

The Secret Dancer
“It’s that time of year again,” Mum announced cheerfully as she turned on the television. A lively, familiar theme song instantly filled the warm living room, accompanied by images of graceful couples spinning (旋转) across a shining dance floor. “Oh no, not that dance show again,” complained Jason. Despite their initial complaints, the whole family soon gathered on the sofa, drawn into the excitement of ordinary people learning to dance. Dad watched with a special, quiet intensity. His eyes followed the dancers’ feet, an unnatural smile playing on his lips. “I wish I could move like that,” he sighed, stretching out his legs. “But I’ve got two left feet.” Later that day, Mum discovered him in the kitchen, awkwardly dancing with a mop (拖把). He laughed when she caught him. “Some of us are just not made for dancing,” he said.
However, everything changed the following week. Jason, wandering through town, spotted a poster announcing a local dance competition specifically for beginners. An idea occurred to him. Rushing home, he announced his find to Dad. “Why don’t you and Mum enter It would be a fantastic surprise for her!” Dad laughed nervously, running a hand through his hair. “Me On a dance floor In public That’s a recipe for disaster, son.” But a thoughtful, determined look had climbed onto his face, refusing to leave.
And so began a hidden mission. After Dad secretly signed up for the competition, every Monday evening, when Mum went out to gym, Grandma arrived at the house. She was a strict but encouraging teacher. “Ouch! Sorry, Gran!” Dad would apologize each time he stepped on her toes. “Nonsense,” Gran insisted firmly. “We just need to work hard.” Slowly, under her patient guidance, Dad’s awkward steps began to find a rhythm (节奏). Jason watched admiringly as his father, once so awkward, started moving with newfound grace—but only when Mum wasn’t home.

One day Mum returned home unexpectedly early. When she came in, the sound of music led her to the living room. Peeking in, she was astonished to see Dad moving with a surprising sense of rhythm, practicing with an invisible partner. He was spinning round and suddenly froze, his face turning red. Instead of laughing, Mum’s eyes welled up with happy tears. “All this time...this was your secret mission ” she asked softly, her voice trembling with emotion. Dad nodded, avoiding her eyes. Mum stepped forward, “From now on, you practice with me. I can’t wait to see you shine on the stage.”
On the night of the competition, the family arrived at the site. Under the bright lights, Dad, once so awkwardly dancing with a mop, now moved with confidence that held the audience’s attention. He and Mum danced perfectly in harmony, every step telling the story of their secret mission. Jason watched admiringly, as his father moved with pure grace. When their music ended, the hall erupted into enthusiastic applause. As the judges announced their third-place victory, Dad’s face lit up with pride. At that moment, he was not just a dancer who had mastered the steps, but one who had found his confidence and joy.
