Thomas, a skinny young boy, loved football with all his heart. Practice after practice, he eagerly gave everything he had. But being half the size of the other boys, he got absolutely nowhere. At all the games, this hopeful athlete sat on the bench(板凳) and hardly ever played.
This teenager lived alone with his father, and the relationship between the two of them was very special. Even though the son was always on the bench, his father was always in the stands cheering. He never missed a game.
This young man was still the smallest of the class when he entered high school. But his father continued to encourage him. All through high school he never missed a practice nor a game but remained a benchwarmer. Besides, his faithful father was always in the stands, always with words of encouragement for him. The young man loved football and was determined to hang in there, and perhaps he’d get to play when he became a senior.
It was at the end of his senior football season and as he ran to the practice field shortly before the big playoff(夺标决赛) that the coach met him with a telegram(电报). The young man read the telegram and he became deathly silent. Biting his lip, he breathed, “My father died this morning. Is it all right if I miss practice today?” The coach put his arm gently around his shoulder and said, “Take the rest of the week off, son. And don’t even plan to come back to the game on Saturday.”
Saturday arrived, and the game was not going well. In the second half when the team was two scores behind, a silent young man quietly slipped into the empty locker room and put on his football wear. As he ran onto the sidelines, the coach and his players were surprised to see their faithful teammate back so soon.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

[参考范文]
“Coach, please let me play. I’ve just got to play today,” said the young man. The coach pretended not to hear him. There was no way he wanted his worst player in this close playoff game. But determination shone from his eyes. The coach looked at him with mixed emotions. Admittedly, he kept him in the team because he always put his heart and soul to every practice, and provided the other members with the spirit and cheering they badly needed. He knew how much this game meant to the young man, especially after the loss of his father. Finally he gave in. He nodded and said, “Alright, Thomas. Get out there and show them what you’ve got.” Before long, the coach, the players and everyone in the stands could not believe their eyes.
This little unknown, who had never played before, was doing everything right. He ran, passed, and tackled like a star. He seemed to have found a hidden talent within himself, fueled by the memory of his father. The score was soon tied. In the closing seconds of the game, this kid intercepted a pass and ran all the way for winning a last killing! The crowd erupted in cheers, and his teammates lifted him up on their shoulders, celebrating his triumph. Thomas became a hero in that moment. His father’s words echoed in his mind: sometimes, it was the underdog who surprised everyone and emerged as the true champion. Thomas was sure that his father was watching from above, proud of the football player he had become.(共15张PPT)

At the beginning of this year, my daughter Helen spent a month in the hospital fighting for her life. Since then, she has had to deal with the disease as well as many side effects. She has met each challenge, disappointment, and setback with courage.
With her 16th birthday approaching, Helen dreamt of a party and campfire at the beach with friends, relatives, and her beloved dog, Ginger. It took a while, but I finally found a good beach that allowed dogs and campfires and had easy access. However, a week before her party, Helen’s disease worsened.
Our friend Ian called the night before the party and turned our plans upside down. The small beach we’d selected and the surrounding beaches would host a 30,000-person event on the party night and would be closed. It was a disaster because we had researched: no other nearby beach would work.
Helen had set her heart on having her dog and a campfire at the beach, but as usual, she didn’t complain. In her young life, she’s dealt with much worse things than a destroyed birthday party. She sat down and began to quietly cry. After a while Helen decided she’d rather have the party at our home so she could have her dog and a campfire. We called the invitees with the changed plans.
How to design a party at home with dogs and campfires was a challenge. It occurred to us that we could make full use of our yard. Ian’s wife Jayme came first with some small signs, which read:“Welcome to Campbell Beach, where dogs and campfires are welcome. Where the beach is small, the waves are so far away you must close your eyes to see them, but not so the love for Helen and her little dog. Happy Birthday, Helen!”

[参考范文]
An hour later, Ian arrived with a loaded truck.Hardly had Ian arrived when we began to unload from the truck, which was filled with plenty of sand, palm trees, beach toys, and other necessities for the party. Words failed me as I was overcome with a mixture of surprise and gratitude. We made an effort to set everything up in the yard, small signs hanging. Small as the “beach” was, Helen was unable to contain her joy and excitement. With all the things arranged well, the guests arrived.
Helen and her friends couldn’t wait to play on the sand. Not only did they build their sand castles, but they also lit torches and enjoyed the company of the campfire. With the dog barking happily, the children were laughing and playing on the “beach” around the campfire. When it was cake time, all the friends sang songs together to express their wishes to Helen. The birthday girl was in high spirits. It was the “beach” built with so much love that made her blessed with an unforgettable birthday.(共16张PPT)

In the town of Greenfield, a group of three adventurous spirits-Jack, Simon, and Lucas-had discovered an ancient map in Jack’s grandfather’s house. The map, yellowed with age, described a mysterious island that had the legendary(传说的) Silver Falcon, a statue that was said to award its finder enormous wisdom and fortune.
As typical eighth graders with the excitement of discovery and dreams of greatness, they decided they would be the ones to discover this hidden treasure. They agreed to start this search during the upcoming spring break, keeping their plans secret from the adults who would undoubtedly discourage such a dangerous adventure.
The days that followed were filled with preparation. They read books on survival, learned about the stars for navigation, and tested their courage in smaller woods. The boys were united by their unshakable resolve and the promise of an adventure that could change their lives forever.
As the spring break began, they set out just as the sun painted the sky with colors of orange and gold. They felt a mixture of excitement and slight nervousness. They carried backpacks filled with supplies and the ancient map that they hoped would lead them to glory. The beginning of their journey was full of laughter and songs around the campfire, but as days passed, the trip’s reality set in. The path grew more dangerous, and the maps guided them through thick woods and muddy wetlands. They learned to work together as their friendship was tested by constant challenges. Slowly, the island drew nearer.
A conflict arose when they reached the foot of Mount Veritas, the final barrier before reaching the island. Lucas twisted his ankle, and the slightest movement sent sharp pains shooting through his leg. With time running out, Jack and Simon had to make a choice: Should they push on and risk Lucas’ well-being or turn back after coming so far?
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
At crossroads, Jack and Simon exchanged knowing glances.
When reaching the Silver Falcon, the three boys found no fortune there at all.
[参考范文]
At crossroads, Jack and Simon exchanged knowing glances. They realized they couldn’t leave Lucas behind and that the statue could wait but their friendship could not. With great determination and strengthened bonds, they constructed a makeshift stretcher and carried Lucas through the last leg of their journey. As they reached the top of the last hill, the island revealed itself in all its glory. It was more impressive than they could have ever imagined. The Silver Falcon stood in the center, its wings shining in the sunlight.
When reaching the Silver Falcon, the three boys found no fortune there at all. At that time, they realized the true treasure of their journey. It wasn’t about the wisdom or fortune the Silver Falcon could bring-it was about the memories they had created together and the lessons they had learned along the way. In an unexpected turn, the Silver Falcon seemed to acknowledge their growth. As they stood before it, its eyes shone brightly, and the forest around them came alive with the songs of birds and the rustling of leaves. A soft voice filled the clearing congratulating them on their bravery and unity.(共16张PPT)

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the animal shelter, Sarah walked through the rows of cages until her eyes landed on a small, trembling dog huddled(蜷缩) in the corner. “I think I’ve found the one,” Sarah whispered softly to herself as she looked into the dog’s sad eyes. This timid, abandoned dog had no idea that a journey of transformation with friendly people lay in store for him.
The shelter staff explained that the dog, named Buddy, had a difficult past and was very shy and scared. Sarah extended a hand, offering a soothing tone, “Hey sweetie, you must have a story to tell, but from now on, you’ve got a buddy in me.”
Bringing Buddy home was just the beginning of their journey, which was rocky at first for him. Everything was strange and new, causing him to hide under furniture and startle at every sound. Therefore, Sarah provided a cozy bed, delicious meals, and most importantly, heaps of love and comfort.
Slowly but surely, he started to emerge from his shell, wagging his tail tentatively and gazing at Sarah with a glimmer of hope in his eyes. Under Sarah’s patient and loving guidance, Buddy flourished, even learning tricks and commands, and forming a deep bond with his new owner.
The journey of healing turned out to be a success. But Sarah had never expected it would bring about another one.
One day, while scrolling through social media, Sarah came across a heartwarming story about dogs being trained to assist children with autism(自闭症). Those children had social communication difficulties and had few facial expressions and gestures. Without hesitation, she inquired about the program and soon, Buddy was enrolled in training to become a certified therapy(治疗) dog. But she was unsure whether Buddy would be comfortable with the new challenge.

Their first day at the therapy center was filled with uncertainty.
As the weeks progressed, Sarah noticed a remarkable change both in the children and Buddy.
[参考范文]
Their first day at the therapy center was filled with uncertainty. The children, accustomed to their own company or limited interactions, were initially cautious about Buddy. Some would avoid eye contact, while others stood still, observing from a distance. Buddy sensed the anxiety too and mirrored their calm, sitting patiently and occasionally offering a gentle touch with his nose to a child who seemed less afraid. Despite the initial challenges, Sarah was confident that Buddy would eventually adapt to this new environment and make a positive impact.
As the weeks progressed, Sarah noticed a remarkable change both in the children and Buddy. The once timid dog now eagerly approached the children, gently touching their hands with his nose and wagging his tail enthusiastically. In return, the children would stroke his soft fur and share their snacks with him. Their fear and hesitation gradually changed into smiles and laughter as they began to trust and form bonds with one another. It was evident that the journey of transformation that began in the animal shelter had now extended to the therapy center, where Buddy’s presence brought joy and comfort to those in need.(共15张PPT)

Most people think that procrastination(拖延) is a negative habit. But people like me, who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our “slower” approach to getting tasks done.
I’m the only procrastinator in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the “do it right now” gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying “Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today,”
“No way!” I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when they needed to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision could be beneficial. This was because our minds continued to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done was just as good as my sister’s... or so I thought.
At school we’d been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment, my teacher Mr Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. “I have no clue how I could get it done,” my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn’t say anything.
Not because I shared his anxiety-but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work being exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn’t give it a second thought for weeks.

Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project.
That taught me a great lesson.
[参考范文]
Before I knew it, I had only one day left for the project. In a panic, I quickly glued together what I pulled out from our recycle bin, my hands shaking with the weight of each hasty decision. The finished result looked miserable. However, several of my classmates, including Nate, had created amazingly detailed buildings. They used materials like clay, wood and so on and their constructions were highly praised by Mr Smith. When I saw their models, I felt even more embarrassed about mine. It was obvious that they had put a lot more time into the assignment than I had.
That taught me a great lesson. I learnt from that day the importance of deciding on my priorities and budgeting my time. From then on, I tackled things a lot earlier instead of putting things off until the next day. As a result, not only did I finish my tasks on time, but I also felt better because I didn’t have to panic at the last minute. At the end of the next semester, my work was chosen by Mr Smith on another occasion. Seeing my change, my parents and my sister were so proud of me. It dawned on me that getting things done immediately instead of being a procrastinator really counted.(共15张PPT)

I begged my mom to let me make cookies by myself. Even though I had never attempted baking before, I was nine years old and my friend Emmie had been baking cupcakes by herself for a year. I was determined to prove that I could make it.
My brother, Caleb, laughed at the idea of me cooking alone, calling it a disaster. Having a big brother can be annoying. Despite his laughing, my mom agreed to let me try. She reminded me to take my time and be careful because I’d had some messy spills before I was nine.
I raced to the kitchen and went to work. I cracked eggs and put a cold stick of butter into the bowl. I turned on the mixer at medium speed-and whoa. Whoa. Whoa! What a disaster! I had to wipe butter off my face, then off the table and floor.
Caleb made fun of me again, calling me a mess. I chased him away with a spoon and turned back to the mixing bowl. I started again with softer butter. Referring to the recipe, I poured everything needed into the bowl and mixed it. After that, I put round batter(面糊) onto the cookie sheet and put it into the oven(烤箱). Within a minute, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen-the smell of cookie success!
I was going to prove that I was responsible. No more eye-rolling from my brother. No more “You’re too young” from my parents. I was grown up and in control.
I stared into the oven, and my heart sank. The neat, little balls had melted(融化) and overflowed to the edges of the cookie sheet. I pulled the pan out just as Caleb wandered back into the kitchen.
“What in the world?” He started to laugh. “Cookie soup?”
“You just be quiet,” I whispered, trying not to cry. “Just leave me alone.”
“How’s it going in there?” Dad called from the living room.
Caleb raised his eyebrows and bit his lip. I responded that everything was fine, pouring the melted batter into the bowl quickly.

[参考范文]
I picked up the directions, wondering what had gone wrong. Then I realized I had forgotten to add the flour, which made the batter too runny. That’s why the cookies spread out. I added the flour and re-baked the cookies. Then I watched carefully as they rose and browned in the oven. The sweet smell of biscuits soon filled the kitchen, and my heart beat with excitement. I couldn’t wait to show my family what I had accomplished. Caleb came in and took a peek, but this time, I had full confidence in myself.
I brought a plate of cookies into the living room for my parents. Surprised and delighted, they took a cautious bite. “You are so great, honey,” Mom praised. “The cookies are delicious!” She smiled and gave me a kiss, and Dad nodded in agreement. Caleb took a cookie in his hand, and gave me a big smile of approval. Seeing the reaction, I knew I had made it, feeling a sense of accomplishment. I had proved baking skills to my family as well as to myself.(共14张PPT)

Our neighbor, Mrs Moore is an old artist, who lives alone with her cat Taffy. Her husband passed away years ago and her children work in other cities. Mrs Moore always wears a serious look but in fact she is a very nice neighbor. She does three things every day-petting Taffy, painting and baking, among which baking is the part I like. Whenever the mouth-watering smell gets over the fence, I could expect a paper bag containing delicious cookies to be passed over the fence and shared by my sister Jennifer and me. To return this favor, my dad would mow the lawn(修剪草坪) for Mrs Moore and help repair the water pipes.
Last year, Dad put his idea of building a tree house for us in our backyard into action. Dad got everything in place within two weeks. It was a yellow tree house with red roof, which made a great place for Jennifer and me to get out of the sight of Mom and Dad to have fun and talk about our girlish matters. We couldn’t wait to get in only to find Taffy had taken occupation of it and messed up the inside. We ourselves were unwilling to talk about such a problem to our nice neighbor, but we had no other choice. Dad was the one we sent to Mrs Moore’s house for a friendly talk about the issue.
After the talk, Dad took Mrs Moore on an inspection of the tree house, at which she was extremely astonished, saying she had never expected Taffy could be so fascinated by it. She promised to take care of the problem but to our disappointment, the cat could still find ways to climb over the fence and get into the tree house. After a thousand apologies to us, Mrs Moore gave the problem a careful consideration and came up to a big decision: In view of Taffy’s obsession(痴迷) with a tree house, why not build one specially for him?

Mrs Moore racked her brains(绞尽脑汁) and worked out a plan to exchange our tree houses.
[参考范文]
Mrs Moore bought a ready-made one from an Internet store and had some workers fix it up in her garden. The tree house looked great in the garden. It was in the shape of a bird nest with bright colors of purple and orange. Mrs Moore put cat toys and cat food in it to make sure Taffy would be attracted. However, out of the expectation of all of us, however much effort she put into making the tree house attractive, the cat just wouldn’t give it a single visit, and wouldn’t stop coming into ours.
Mrs Moore racked her brains(绞尽脑汁) and worked out a plan to exchange our tree houses. Now that she failed to attract Taffy to her tree house, she might as well attract Jennifer and me to it. She painted beautiful pictures on the walls of the tree house and put comfortable cushions in it. Sure enough, unlike the silly cat, we were wise enough to decide it was much better than our tree house and an agreement was made on the spot. We couldn’t be happier to have Mrs Moore as our neighbor and we couldn’t love her more.(共14张PPT)

When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips(郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky.Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel(漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris(碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.

Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
[参考范文]
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the devastating scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To uplift Luella’s spirits and bring her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared,I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing her devotion to those tulips she had nurtured. Determined to restore the beauty that once thrived, I suggested that we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly embraced. With each bulb carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings filled the garden once again, which symbolized the sprouting of a new friendship between us, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: It’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.
