M: I thought you planned to practise the violin today, Linda.
W: Well, I did nothing but send e-mails all day.
Text 2
M: We really must go to the town to buy that medicine right now.
W: I think that’s OK after we have breakfast.
Text 3
M: Susan, when do you leave home for work
W: I usually leave home at 7:30.
M: But it’s already 7:50. Won’t you be late
W: Oh, no. My watch is 30 minutes slow.
Text 4
W: It’s a lovely day today. What about going to the park this afternoon
M: I’d like to, but I’ve got some friends coming over and they’ll stay for dinner. I’m afraid it’ll be a busy afternoon for me.
Text 5
M: Oh God. Is the weather always unpleasant in London
W: Well, people here are accustomed to the rainy days. Well, don’t worry. The wind will stop and the sky will clear up tomorrow.
Text 6
M: You are busy now, Kate. Once you finish, I’d like to have a talk with you.
W: All e in, please.
M: Oh, no, I don’t want to trouble you. I can wait. I’ll come back later.
W: I’m afraid it’s going to be a long wait! I’m working on my English paper.
M: English paper I thought you’d finished it. Didn’t you turn it in on Friday
W: But the professor just returned it to me. I was told to add five more pages.
M: Five more pages That’s quite a lot. How are you going to do it
W: That’s what I am trying to find out. Now what can I do for you
Text 7
W: Good evening, Jordan! Welcome to our TV programme. We know you are a great travel photographer. So where have you been recently
M: I’ve spent the last few years in Asia. I’m looking forward to heading to some new places.
W: So which is your favourite country
M: China, of course. I went through the deserts, the jungles and the rivers. What impressed me most were the mountains. China really has them all.
W: Is there a city you consider your second home
M: Yeah. Many people may decide on Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen, but I choose Chongqing. It’s great to go back and visit every now and then when we are travelling in China.
W: I see. Some people want to give up their jobs to travel around the world. What’s your advice
M: Do it, but have a backup in case things don’t work out.
Text 8
W: How are you enjoying college, Dennis
M: It’s great. I’m settling in well.
W: What’s your room like
M: Oh, it’s a good one. I have a nice view over the campus and my roommate is OK.
W: Oh, you have a roommate What’s his name
M: Faisal. He’s from Indonesia. He’s only here until the end of term.
W: Is he OK to live with
M: Yes, he has a good sense of humour and we both like the same kinds of music. He’s a bit untidy though, which makes me annoyed.
W: Well, at least you only have to put up with that for a few months.
M: Oh no, he’s fine. He’s a good friend. We’ve been going to movies and cafes together and we’re going to a concert tonight.
W: How is your college work going
M: Very well. I go for a run when I wake up before breakfast, and then I read all morning. My lectures are in the afternoons.
W: Sounds like you are well organized.
M: I am.
Text 9
W: Oh, Mike! I didn’t know you had any interest in painting.
M: I don’t know much about it at all, so I thought it would be a good idea to take this course.
W: Did you go to the art show last night
M: No, there was lots of work in the lab. The show is open for one more day, so I’m going to see it tonight with my sister. What do you think of it
W: I love it. Desiree’s paintings will catch your eyes as soon as you see them and then your eyes lock on them.
M: I can’t wait to see them myself. And did you say the painter’s name was Desiree
W: Yes, but she only uses that name when she paints. Her real name is Lucy Green. But don’t you think Desiree really sounds more exciting
M: It sure does. Oh, it looks like Mr Brown is here. I’ll talk to you after class.
Text 10
W: Today we are visiting Woodhill Shelter—the most unusual animal shelter in Britain. It does not house wild animals rescued from zoos or sea creatures from ocean parks. What it does have is a lot of lucky and happy cows, pigs, goats, sheep and chickens rescued from becoming your lunch by animal rights groups.
The shelter was set up by Jill and Ben Smith. Neither of them eats animal products, but lives instead on a plant-based diet. They say it is a kinder and better way to live. The shelter wasn’t much visited until three years after it was built, and now it has large numbers of followers.
All the farm workers are volunteers without pay, but get free lunch and coffee in return for their work. If you want more information about the farm, you can phone 6978325. And if you want to become a volunteer, you must visit the website and fill in the online form. Posts are not accepted because letters are easy to lose.

One possible version:
Meanwhile, her new classmates were busy working on something. They were going to give Eva their “hearts”. Quickly but quietly, Ms Robins, with an exquisite paper bag she fetched from her office, was walking around the classroom to collect the candy hearts. Growing heavy with the paper bag was the students’ welcome for their new classmate. Sitting beside Eva, Chase felt his heart racing and palms sweating. In order not to ruin the new year surprise for Eva, he pretended to be discussing maths problems with her to occupy her attention. The stone in his heart finally dropped when Ms Robins tiptoed towards him and placed the paper bag on his hands.
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone,” said Chase. Surprise written on Eva’s face, she turned around and was greeted by the sunny smiles on her classmates’ faces. “Open it,” Chase encouraged her. No sooner had she opened the paper bag than everybody cheered, “Happy New Year”. The candies which were made in the shape of heart blurred her eyes. If only she had been able to express how much this precious gift meant to her. Springing from her seat, she stepped forward and bowed to her new but considerate classmates, who not only erased her anxiety but also planted the seed of hope in her heart. What a hearty welcome!单元素养测评卷(二)

B [2024·浙江省丽水市高一期末]
Eleven-year-old Ruby has a unique hobby—making wishes come true for nursing home residents in Harrison, Arkansas. Inspired by her mother’s work as a nurse, Ruby accompanied her mother to the nursing homes during the summer and has developed a close bond with the elderly residents.
One day, Ruby noticed a resident named Pearl looking sad while she was staring out of a window. When she asked what was wrong, Pearl explained that she had seen her dog being taken away, and she didn’t know when she would see her beloved pet again. It broke Ruby’s heart, and she decided to take action. She began asking the residents what three things they wanted most in the world. To her surprise, their requests were simple—chocolate bars, McDonald’s fries, and pants that fit properly.
Ruby and her mother used their own money to achieve the wishes of around 100 residents within three months. Soon, they started receiving donations from the kind-hearted people of Harrison. Encouraged by the overwhelming response, they set up a GoFundMe page called “Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents” to collect $5,000. They reached their goal within a month.
When GoFundMe recognized Ruby as a Kid Hero and shared her story worldwide, donations poured in. In just 24 hours, they raised $20,000, and within five months, the total surpassed $250,000. With these funds, they were able to grant(准予) more creative wishes, such as creating a man cave for one resident with a Walkman and snacks, and providing financial assistance for another resident to attend an out-of-state wedding.
Motivated by their success, Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents became a non-profit organization and expanded nationwide. Their new goal is to set up a shared laptop in at least one nursing home in each state. Ruby’s passion for kindness drives her to continue her efforts, and her acts of kindness serve as a reminder that even small gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life.

San Francisco’s waterfront (滨水区) is on the National Register of Historic Places for good reason.
Its beautiful old landmarks, like the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge, have been seen in many books, TV shows and movies—from the stories and novels of Jack London to the 1970s TV series The Streets of San Francisco. The future of San Francisco’s waterfront, however, isn’t safe.
In 2016, the National Trust for Historic Preservation put part of the city’s shoreline on its list of the US’s most endangered historic places, in part because of the threat of sea level rise. The waterfront landmarks of many cities are under increasing threat from floods and rising sea level brought on by human-driven climate change. St Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy and the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles face similar challenges to San Francisco.
“The whole issue of climate change and historic preservation intersects (交织) right at the waterfront,” said Elaine Forbes, director of the Port of San Francisco. As she watched the boats come and go on a sunny afternoon, Forbes said, “Sea level rise hasn’t historically been as much of a threat to San Francisco as major earthquakes.” However, that’s changed. Parts of the main road that runs along the waterfront have flooded from heavy rain in recent years. The state estimates (预估) the water could rise up to about two and a half feet above its present level by 2060, and possibly up to seven feet by the turn of the century.
Now, San Francisco is considering measures to save its historic shoreline. But the growing magnitude and frequency of the climate-related threats, the high costs and effort needed in saving heritage sites, and competing ideas about what’s worth saving and what isn’t, can make it hard for cities to know what to do first.

If exercise seems like a great idea but you can never keep up a routine, it’s worth thinking about your exercise “mindset”—defined by psychologists as attitudes that shape our behaviour and reality. Research evidence is mounting that identifying some of our most habitual beliefs and replacing them with more adaptive ones can revive(恢复) our ability to keep ourselves healthy.
“Whether they’re true or not, mindsets have an effect,” says Dr Alia Crum. “They change what we pay attention to, what we’re motivated to do, how we feel emotionally about what we’re doing and what we decide to prioritize (优先处理).” For instance, maybe you’ve tried to shame or scare yourself into going to the gym by reconsidering the health risks of not moving. Or perhaps you’ve aimed to get active by thinking of the long-term positive aspects of exercise: exercising regularly is 1.5 times more effective than taking medicine in easing depression, stress and anxiety.
In contrast, thinking about exercise in all-or-nothing terms—“I need at least 30 minutes or there’s no point”—is the enemy of consistency. You want to use the mindset that “any and all movement is worth it, and everything counts”, says Dr Michelle Segar, a researcher at the University of Michigan. Even a quick walk in the middle of a busy day is good for your well-being. If that doesn’t agree with your perfectionist tendencies (倾向), consider whether those tendencies have worked for you. Though strict standards may help some people, for many others they backfire, creating a cycle of failure.
Besides bringing flexibility (灵活性) to how you view your movement, changing your “why” for getting active can also help keep up motivation. Rather than seeing workouts as a way to lose weight, it can help to focus on more immediately pleasant reasons to do it, like clearing your mind or feeling less stressed.
Regarding the process of exercise as something that’s attractive makes a difference. The key is to focus on the pleasure that exercise can bring, and then pick an activity that is actually rewarding.
( )32.What’s the writing purpose of Paragraph 1
A.To give a general description of the mindset.
B.To explain people’s confusion over the mindset.
C.To investigate the reasons for habitual behaviours.
D.To stress the importance of adapting the exercise mindset.
( )33.What can be learned about Alia Crum’s point of view
A.Everything matters in promoting one’s health.
B.Mindsets affect one’s motivation and decision to act.
C.It’s a good idea to make an exercise plan more flexible.
D.It’s necessary to take some enjoyable and valuable exercise.
( )34.What does the author mean by the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3
A.Strict standards require people to work out every day.
B.Strict standards aren’t suitable for those perfectionists.
C.Strict standards may lead to the opposite result for others.
D.Strict standards stop people revising their plans regularly.
( )35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.A new study of exercise routine
B.Focus on the pleasure of exercise
C.The power of your exercise mindset
D.Exercise mindset and failure connected

A hearty welcome
Chase counted his new year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class ” Mum asked.
“Yep!” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms Robins and looked around shyly.
“This is Eva,” said Ms Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today ”Chase raised his hand since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks, Chase,” Ms Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.”
That was when Chase realized he didn’t have a new year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.
At break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. Eva had brought a packed lunch, so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.
While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the new year gifts they exchanged. This won’t be New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts. But as he sat down at his table, an idea flooded into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.
When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms Robins about their plan. Ms Robins smiled. “That’s very thoughtful,” she said. “Let’s go for it.”
It was maths time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the room so she wouldn’t notice.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Meanwhile, her new classmates were busy working on something.
Paragraph 2:
“Here’s your new year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone,” said Chase.
