UNIT 1 CULTURAL HERITAGE
The locals planned to build a high-speed railway but an archaeologist protested against this proposal. That was because it meant an old temple on the mountain, regarded as the only historic heritage, would likely disappear forever. How to creatively keep a balance between construction and protection was a challenging issue. A committee was established to prevent the temple from being damaged. They made sure that they would investigate relevant clues and conduct necessary research in an attempt to solve the problem. The members referred to former documents, and turned to professionals from all over the world for advice. At last, by comparison, they found that the application of the digital image technology could be a good solution. Throughout the process, many overseas experts took part in the project. Many locals donated money and made great contributions to it. At last, the temple was preserved well. The locals held a parade for it. In their opinion, it was worthwhile to protect good traditions and promote further appreciation of heritage. They would not forgive and give way to those who damaged relics.

UNIT 2 WILDLIFE PROTECTION
A poster about illegal hunting immediately stirred up strong emotions in me yesterday. As is widely known, many species are dying out at an alarming rate due to human activities. About three species become extinct every hour on average. To make more profits, some people shoot masses of whales, sharks and deer for their meat, skin or fur. Kangaroos, koalas and dolphins are also reduced to endangered species because their habitats are threatened. Fortunately, the authorities are aware of what on earth should be done and effective measures are being taken to preserve wildlife. Volunteers set up nature reserves on the plain and watch over them day and night to keep them from being attacked. Gradually, they make progress and the antelope population has recovered. So far some species have been removed from the endangered species list. If people don't treat animals as goods, we can live in harmony with them. All living creatures including insects in our neighborhoods have equal rights to live. We intend to search for more means to protect them and observe their beauty instead of just being concerned about the problem. We human beings should always remind ourselves that the solution exists in our action.

UNIT 3 THE INTERNET
For Lily, it is incredibly convenient to chat and stream videos online. Meanwhile, she can keep herself updated with information from large databases and she often downloads software stored in a special computer file. Her father warned her to protect her privacy in case of identity theft. He told her not to be rude when she chatted with others, or she may become a target of trolls and cyberbullies or be stuck in some unnecessary problems. He reminded Lily to keep in mind some tips and guidelines about online safety so as not to be taken in by false information.
Before long, Lily left home for another province to work. Without Lily keeping him company, the father felt upset, going through a particularly tough time. For a while, he couldn't keep track of Lily because of the long distance. When told he could also have access to social networks by pressing a few buttons or clicking the mouse, he was inspired. How embarrassing it was when he was made fun of for not having an account! It wasn't long before he was familiar with the functions of Wi-Fi and search engine and able to surf the Internet. Now he is a blogger who updates blog posts every few days. A number of local residents follow his example. They are enjoying the benefits of the Internet.

UNIT 4 HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
When studying in the United Kingdom, I was no longer puzzled about when England got Wales, Scotland and Ireland joined to it or when the southern part of Ireland broke away from it. Actually, the four belonging to the UK use the same currency and military defence, but they have different legal systems. There were many fascinating places, so I had to keep my eyes open. Later I traveled to Ireland where I found myself fascinated by the landscape. It was a feast for my eyes as if I were approaching a gallery where I surrounded with beautiful pictures. Every day I was greeted with the rolling mountains dotted with sheep and cattle, the roar of the ocean and the scent of flowers. I often had a sip of wine or beer in nearby pubs. The waiters there charged a small amount of money for their service. Once I talked about their customs with a crowd of Irish people who/what were interested in our Confucius philosophy, poems created by poets in the Tang Dynasty and our ancestors' chief achievements. They were generous and shared with me a snack cooked with butter and honey and a mouth-watering stew. The journey is so striking that I'm eager to go there again.

UNIT 5 MUSIC
An ordinary-looking girl named Lucy had a talent for music and her aim was to become a master in music. She made it and became a capable composer and a good performer. However, when she was 24 years old, a serious disease made her ache all over. From then on, she went through various/varied treatments, but none could cure it. In addition, she lost a good opportunity to get onto the stage with her band due to her disease. The disease also had an impact on her appearance. She tried out for some performances, but the reaction from audience was terrible. Gradually, she became absorbed in watching her previous albums, assuming that she were still fine.
Her parents were worried about the phenomenon and thus, they tried to help her out somehow. One day they sent one of her original compositions to a virtual choir. The conductor in charge fell in love with the energy in her music. Instead of telling a romantic story, her music can touch people's soul, bring people relief and cause a sense of satisfaction. Nowadays they have designed a special studio for her and set up advanced equipment. This enables her to prove her talents and to win an award. Moreover, her parents' support is the rock that/which she can lean on to become strong and to get through hard times.
