Part 1 Pre-reading 1.First of all, let’s watch a video together! -What’s the video about -It’s about a conflict with her mother 2.Predict show a picture Ask: Do you want to know what is happening Part 2While-reading 1.Listen to the tape and what is happening (1) What problem does the son have with his father The son wants to have a career in music after graduating from senior high school . The father want the son to go to university and become a lawyer. (2)What is the genre of the text? A play is a story performed on a stage. It has settings, characters, a plot, actions and dialogues between characters. 2.Read the text again and find out settings, characters and a plot from the text. Settings:when,where, who and what Where when who what The living room.At Friday night.grandfather and father are playing chess in the living room with a table and two chairs at front center. Part 3 Deeper-reading 1.Explore the title Like Father Like Son Choose another proper title of the play and give your reasons. My career, My choice The son and the father have the same personality--stubbornness ,and the son behaved exactly like his father in some way. However, they hold different opinions on future career because of their differences in age, talent and experience. 有其父必有其子 2.Why does the author create an atmosphere by using “playing chess” instead of “drinking coffee” Chess represents a game(博弈)and the author wants to create a tense atmosphere. Also, it symbolizes a conflict. 3.What is the function of setting? It reflects the social background and cultural characteristics. It helps create a certain emotional atmosphere (情感氛围). It helps the audience have a better understanding of the characters and the plot. Part 4 Post-reading Group work Make dialogues and show them out You can pick a specific situation and Make a dialogue with your partners,three or four students as a group.
