探究五 动词不定式作定语和结果状语
动词不定式作定语和结果状语:作定语时,一般作后置定语,修饰前面的名词或代词;作结
果状语时常与 only 连用,表示出乎意料的结果。
语法点1 动词不定式作定语
(1)只能位于所修饰词的后面,可扩展为一个定语从句
①A good friend gives us strength, love, laughter and the courage to keep trying.
=A good friend gives us strength, love, laughter and the courage that makes us keep trying.
好朋友给我们力量、爱、欢笑和继续努力的勇气。
②I need a pen to write with.
=I need a pen that I can write with.
我需要一支写字的钢笔。
如果不定式的动词与被修饰词之间有逻辑上的动宾关系,并且该动词是不及物动词,则需要加上适当的介词使动宾关系成立。 When you move somewhere new, the first thing for you is to find a place to live in. 当你搬到一个新的地方时,首先要找一个住处。
(2)用法
表示将来还未发生的动作。
①All the teachers to attend the opening ceremony tomorrow should wear the uniforms.

序数词、形容词最高级或the last, the only, the next等后常用动词不定式作定语。

语法点2 动词不定式作结果状语
(1)用法
动词不定式作结果状语时,最常见的结构之一是在动词不定式前面加上only,构成“only to do”结构,用以引出意想不到的或不愉快的结果,表示说话人并不希望它发生。
①You've raced to the supermarket only to realize you've left the shopping list home.
你冲到超市,却发现你把购物清单落在家里了。
②The traveler looked up suddenly to find a leopard in the tree.
那个旅行者猛然抬头一看,发现树上有一只豹子。
only to do sth与only doing sth都可作结果状语,但前者表示一个与主语愿望相反或出乎主语意料的结果,或用来暗示最初未能实现的动作;后者表示谓语动词本身的动作造成的结果。 I hurried to the supermarket, only to find it had been closed. 我匆忙赶到超市,不料它已经关门了。 His parents died, only leaving him an orphan. 他的父母去世了,只留下他成了孤儿。
动词不定式作结果状语时,常用于一些特定的句型结构中:
①He was too young to have seen the bloody war.
他年龄太小,没有看见那场血腥的战争。
②She is so proud as to look down upon others.

③He is old enough to go to school.
他到上学的年龄了。
④He left his hometown when he was ten, never to return.

(2)特殊情况
在某些情况下,动词不定式可以直接在句中作结果状语。

在某些表示对人进行表扬或批评的形容词后常接不定式表示结果。此类形容词有right, polite, crazy, generous, good, kind, nice等。

I began to ski down the hill.
