I thought I knew a lot about Hamlet. As a high school student with English literature as one of my main subjects1, I have to! Shakespeare's Hamlet is probably the most important play by the most important writer in English. Almost everybody knows “To be, or not to be”, right Having seen quite a few productions of Hamlet and read the play many times2, I was full of confidence—until3 the Peking Opera came to town! 我本以为自己对于《哈姆雷特》了解得相当多。作为高中生,英国文学是我的一门主课,《哈姆雷特》是我必学的内容!莎士比亚的《哈姆雷特》应该是最重要的英语作家创作的最重要的戏剧了。几乎人人都知道“生存,还是毁灭”,对吗?我看过好几部《哈姆雷特》的影视作品,这部戏剧我也读过很多遍了,因此(对于了解《哈姆雷特》这方面)我信心满满——直到城里来了京剧表演!   Dating back to the 18th century4, Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history. Does this mean it's easier than a Shakespeare play to understand To find out the answer5, I just had to go and see The Revenge of Prince Zidan—the Peking Opera version of Hamlet. 京剧的起源可追溯到18世纪,距今已有两百多年历史。这是否意味着京剧比莎士比亚的戏剧更好懂呢?为了找到答案,我必须去看看《王子复仇记》——京剧版的《哈姆雷特》。  Starting with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments6, the opera brought a completely new sound to my Western ears. At first, I thought what I heard was a violin7, but later I learnt that8 it was an instrument with two strings called jinghu9. Then, seeing the main characters come on stage10, I was surprised! The costumes and masks were amazing. The performers of course sang in Chinese, but the music, exaggerated movements and mime helped get the meanings across to the audience. The voices themselves sounded really unique—some of the female voices were so high that11 I was sure they could break glass! And the stage was really simple: a decorated whip represented a horse, and a screen with Chinese characters,a study. I had never seen Prince Hamlet do a backflip before! That was simply incredible. It was so dazzling and energetic that14 I wasn't sure if15 the characters were performers or athletes! The theatre changed a lot during Shakespeare's lifetime. The authorities didn't like it and didn't allow acting in the city itself: They thought it had a bad influence on people and kept them from going to church. Queen Elizabeth, on the other hand, loved acting and helped the theatre become popular.
The theatre in Shakespeare's time was full of life. People did not sit all the time and it was not quiet during the performance. The audience could walk around, eat and drink during the play.
Theatres were open arenas or playhouses that had room for up to three thousand people. There was almost no scenery because the dialogue was the most important part of the play. Colourful and well designed costumes were very important and told the people about the status of a character. Women never performed in plays, so young boys played female characters. The performances took place in the afternoon because it was too dark at night.
There was no stage crew as there is today. Actors had to do everything themselves—from making costumes to setting the stage. Plays were organized by acting companies. They performed about 6 different plays each week because they needed money to survive. They had almost no time to rehearse (排练).
The companies in Shakespeare's time had a rank system. The company belonged to shareholders and managers. They were responsible for everything and got most of the money when the company was successful. Sometimes they even owned their own buildings. Actors worked for the managers and after some time became permanent members of the company. Apprentices (学徒) were young boys and were allowed to act in unimportant roles. They also played female characters in plays.

Beijing Opera, known as China's national opera, also called Peking Opera, which originated in the late 18th century, is a __1__ (combine) of music, dance, art and acrobatics (杂技). With a few hours until curtain call, a quiet but noticeable energy fills the backstage dressing room of the famous Sunbeam Theatre, known as “Hong Kong's Grand Palace for Cantonese Opera”. Tonight, it's the annual Rose family performance.
Some of the performers are eating takeout boxes of food, sure to sustain them through the bows long show ahead. Others are getting a head start on their make up. A few are being helped into their colorful costumes by eager assistants.
But there is something unexpectedly unusual about this particular performance that becomes obvious as soon as the curtains rise: some of the people on stage aren't Chinese.
Mike Brady, who comes from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, stands on stage in full costume. But he has never seen a Cantonese Opera, let alone been in one. As a background character, he has no spoken lines.
This unlikely actor owes his first performance to Lyle Rose, a fellow American who stands next to him in a similar costume. When it comes to performing, Lyle, a native New Yorker who now lives in Hong Kong, is not as green a performer as Mike; in fact, he is the mastermind behind tonight's show.
The entire Rose family is on stage. Mike himself is actually a new addition to the group: his daughter recently married Lyle's younger son.
Cantonese Opera is a family affair for Lyle. Every year, Lyle, his wife, Cynthia Hu Rose, a Hong Konger, and two sons put on a performance to raise money for local charities. But their true purpose for doing it is simply to introduce people to it. Though Cantonese Opera remains an important part of Hong Kong culture, it has to compete with many other forms of entertainment for the attention of younger generations, who associate it with their grandparents. “We love Cantonese Opera,” Lyle said. “We want people of all ages to come and watch.”

Turning Red tells a coming of age story like no other. Mei is a Chinese Canadian girl who turns into a giant red panda anytime she experiences strong emotions, and must find a way to manage both her school life and home life in early 2000s Toronto, Canada. Mei tries to deal with hanging out with her three best friends, the boy band they like and her protective mother, who isn't ready to let go of her growing daughter.
“Turning Red is inspired by the difficulties of growing up and trying to find out how to honor your parents, but also stay true to yourself,” said director Domee Shi. “For Mei Lee in the movie, before becoming the red panda, she thinks she has it all figured out, like we all did before we woke up one day and realized all of a sudden, we're covered in body hair, our feelings are all over the place, and we're hungry all the time.”
Turning Red describes the complexities (难题) of mother daughter relationships well. In fact, the real-life experiences of the film's crew inspired several scenes. To make her crew share more about their childhood, Shi created a video at the office with her team. She encouraged everyone to look back to the past and bring out their embarrassing teen pictures and memories.
