English Market Towns to Visit in the UK
English market towns come in many shapes and sizes. Each has a personality shaped by the goods and services produced and traded for centuries. But each town has more to do than shop.
Hereford, Herefordshire
Hereford has remained a lively market town since 1189. Skirting the town square, you'll find lovely shops, eateries, and the Black and White House Museum. The Hereford Cathedral is the most impressive building in town. It's also home to an ancient library. One of the four original copies of the Magna Carta is displayed there.
Ludlow, Shropshire
Ludlow is known as the Foodie Center of England. Butcher shops, greengrocers, bakeries, and cheese shops line the town square. Bordering the square, the Ludlow Castle is a “must explore” medieval stronghold. The three day Ludlow Food Festival is held each September.
Shrewsbury, Shropshire
Getting to Shrewsbury Town Center from London is challenging but worth the anxiety. The River Severn has a significant turn through town, almost making an island of Shrewsbury Town Center. The shape creates a perfect market where goods could be shipped and received using the river as a highway. Flowers are everywhere—hanging baskets, window boxes, and planters—just what you imagine in an attractive English market town.
Mevagissey, Cornwall
Even if you haven't been to the small fishing village Mevagissey, you've probably seen it in a movie or British TV show. The working harbor (港口) took shape in 1774. Fishermen go out to sea daily and sell their fish in harbor side markets. Don't leave the harbor without a traditional Cornish pie. It's delicious.
21.Where can you find an original copy of the Magna Carta
A.In the Ludlow Castle.
B.In the Foodie Center of England.
C.In the Hereford Cathedral.
D.In the Black and White House Museum.
22.What is a feature of Shrewsbury Town Center
A.It's situated near a big island.
B.It's almost surrounded by water.
C.It's known for its flower festival.
D.It's easily accessible from London.
23.What does the author suggest visitors do in Mevagissey
A.Try the Cornish pie.
B.Watch a British TV show.
C.Go fishing in the sea.
D.Take pictures of the harbor.

I've lived in Cardigan Bay (卡迪根海湾) in West Wales since I was a few months old. You've got everything you need here. Hills, stunning beaches, nice coastal paths. As someone who loves the countryside, I've never wanted to leave.
I was lucky to find work I could do in this area. A lot of people do have to move away in order to find work. I started Adventure Beyond here about 30 years ago and we work all over the UK. We go up to Scotland and work along the Thames. We've also taken groups to Canada, the Himalayas, places like that. But honestly, West Wales has got everything. We can do everything we need right here.
Having grown up here, I find Cardigan Bay is pretty huge and there's a definite sense of belonging. There's an awareness that we're lucky to have these incredible sandy beaches, pebbly beaches, beautiful rivers, and hills. It's peaceful, and it's not overdeveloped. Of course, there are periods when it gets busy, but then the second schools go back and you pretty much get the beaches to yourself. There is a sense of community (群体) too, with a lot of good community based clubs, such as the Poppit Sands Surf Lifesaving Club.
I set up Adventure Beyond to make my own work in the area. I love the outdoors, and I wanted to be in Cardigan Bay, so it was perfect. I've tried to always keep that personal touch. The clients (客户) will pretty much always meet me and all the staff. We took a lot of people on through the Kickstart scheme (启动计划) and they've been employed with us for a few years. A lot of our clients have been with us since we started, too. There's a sense of family, which is quite special.
I won't mention a specific favorite place, but in general the beaches are just amazing. It's just a sort of wild west, really.
24.What can we know from Paragraph 2

B.Its beauty hasn't been noticed.

26.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Keeping that personal touch.

D.Starting Adventure Beyond in Cardigan Bay.
27.What is the text mainly about

Chile is famous for its many attractions. If you're planning a visit, be sure to add “Mano del Desierto” or “Hand of the Desert” to your must see list.
Standing 11 meters tall and made of iron and cement (水泥), this sculpture of a hand emerges from the sand in the Atacama Desert, which is known as the driest desert in the world outside of polar regions. The sculpture was created by Mario Irarrazabal in the early 1980s and was financed by a local nonprofit organization. The sculpture is not only impressive in terms of its design but also in the message it expresses. Many people believe that the hand represents the weakness and helplessness of human beings, as well as their strength and determination to overcome hardships. It is a reflection on the human condition and our relationship with nature.
If you're interested in visiting the Hand of the Desert, take Route 26 or 28 from Antofagasta, a port city in northern Chile. The sculpture is located between mile markers 1309 and 1310 and can be reached from either direction. The desert's flatness makes it easy to spot the sculpture from far away.
Visitors should take precautions (预防措施) before leaving, such as filling their gas tanks, packing plenty of water, and wearing sunscreen. They should also avoid driving too quickly, as many car accidents occur in the desert each year.
For those who are nervous about driving alone, working with an agency like Plan South America is a good choice. The founder of the agency, Harry Hastings, said that he always tries to join a visit to the sculpture with guests traveling to the desert, calling it an “important landmark” that is both culturally and visually significant.
28.What makes the Hand of the Desert a famous attraction
A.Its height and material.
B.Its location and designer.
C.Its building time and local support.
D.Its design and meaning.
29.What can we know about from Paragraph 3
A.The sculpture can be reached very easily.
B.The sculpture can be seen from far away.
C.The sculpture is protected by the government.
D.The sculpture attracts millions of visitors every year.
30.What can we infer about Harry Hastings
A.He built the sculpture “Hand of the Desert”.
B.He gave the financial support to the sculpture.
C.He speaks highly of the sculpture.
D.He likes driving alone to visit the sculpture.
31.Where can the passage probably be taken from
A.A science fiction. B.A magazine.
C.A fairy tale. D.A book review.

I'm interested in the Renaissance (文艺复兴), so I like visiting ancient Italian cities. Ferrara is called City of the Renaissance. When I learned about this city on the Internet, I decided to pay a visit to it.
The city has a certain charm, but I find it isn't as great as other Italian cities like Verona, let alone Venice or Rome. The Michelin Green Guide gives it two stars, which is right.
I first visited the city centre. The Cathedral and Castello Estense are at the heart of the city. Both have striking appearances. I visited the Cathedral first. Castello Estense is also worth visiting, which owes its name to the powerful Este family. It was built with bricks and surrounded by a moat (护城河). At the lower levels, the history of the city and the Este family are told through displays, and in another part the ceilings are shown through mirrors on the ground.
In the north, we can appreciate the Renaissance extension of the town, with straight streets and monumental houses. The famous Palazzo dei Diamanti lies here. When I was visiting it, it started to rain, so after taking a few photos quickly, I cut my visit there short. It had been raining for a few days. When the rain ceased, I went to visit the historical centre and the Renaissance buildings.
After leaving there, I visited several other interesting places such as palaces and the narrow streets of the downtown. After four hours in Ferrara I left by train to Mantua. There I had a much better time.
32.Why did the author pay a visit to Ferrara
A.Because it is related to the Renaissance.
B.Because it is full of charm.
C.Because it is a very famous city in Europe.
D.Because it is strongly recommended by a website.
33.What did the author think of The Michelin Green Guide's comment on Ferrara
A.Subjective. B.Reasonable.
C.Unacceptable. D.Unbelievable.
34.How could Castello Estense probably get its name according to the text
A.It came from the historical buildings.
B.It originated from the straight streets.
C.It was named after the powerful Este family.
D.It was connected to the surrounding moat.
35.What can we infer from the text
A.The writer thought Ferrara was as great as Venice.
B.The writer visited Palazzo dei Diamanti for a long time.
C.The writer was much more satisfied with the tour in Mantua than in Ferrara.
D.The writer was disappointed with the visit to the Cathedral and Castello Estense.

Pick a destination wisely. A key step in planning a fun trip with friends is picking the perfect destination. Big cities are an excellent pick, as there will likely be activities to suit everyone's interests. __40__ Consider the activities you want to do, sites you want to see and the amount of time you have to travel, as these factors will decide your destination.

It was a sunny day. Sophie and her parents decided to go boating in the park. Sophie was amazed by the calm lake in front of her when she reached the lake. It was so still that it reflected (映出) the clouds above like a mirror, but when Sophie walked excitedly to the shore of the lake, she saw small waves spreading out. After a while, the lake became calm again, and the perfect reflection of the clouds returned.
Feeling adventurous, Sophie wanted to discover more about the lake. Her dad saw how excited she was and gave her a life jacket to put on. After they were both ready, they got into a boat to explore the quiet waters. The boatman (船夫) gave her a paddle (船桨) and showed her how to use it. At first, Sophie wasn't good at using the paddle, but with the help of the boatman, she quickly mastered the technique of rowing.
As they moved further into the lake, they passed over some green and heart shaped leaves floating on the water. Yellow flowers stood out among the leaves, shining in the sunlight. It looked like something from a beautiful painting.
Then, as they left the area with the flowers behind, a butterfly landed on Sophie's paddle. “Hi, how beautiful,” she said before it flew away. Sophie tried to paddle softly. “Let's stay close to the shore,” her dad suggested.
Sophie was excited when she saw a turtle (龟) swimming near them. It had short legs and red and yellow on its neck. “Hi, I'm Sophie. What's your name You've got four paddles. Text 10
Before I go on vacation, I always plan my trip carefully. I usually go online to look up all the necessary information, because I don't trust the descriptions in the guidebooks or what the travel agents tell me. First, I look up possible destinations and compare them carefully to see which one best suits my needs. Then I check the cost of traveling to that particular place. If I'm going by plane, I have to compare prices for different airlines to get the cheapest tickets. If I'm traveling by train, then I have to look into train fares. I seldom travel by bus, because of the high rate of traffic accidents on the highway. I also need to check hotels. Usually, I choose to stay in cheap hotels. Finally, I try to plan how much I need to spend on meals and sightseeing. If I plan carefully, I can usually have a good time for the lowest cost.

The lake had more surprises waiting for them. As they continued to row on, a school of fish, shining under the sunlight, swam beneath them. Their movements were so neat. It was as if they were performing a dance just for Sophie and her dad. Sophie sat by the boat, her eyes wide with fascination, trying to follow their path, but they were quick, rushing into the shadows beyond her sight. “Look, Dad! They're very happy!” she shouted with joy in her eyes.
Just then Sophie's mother waved from the shore and called them back. Sophie and her dad turned the boat around with the boatman's help, paddling towards where her mother stood. She was sad to leave the magical world she had just discovered but excited to share the stories of her adventure. After reaching the shore, Sophie yelled, “The trip was amazing, Mom! You should've seen the fish and the turtle!” Her parents exchanged a look of satisfaction, happy to have provided their daughter with an experience she would keep in mind forever.

18.Where does the speaker get information for her trip
A.On the Internet.
B.From travel agents.
C.From guidebooks.
19.What public transportation does the speaker seldom take
A.Planes.
B.Trains.
