That woman carried a new blanket over her arm. Wordlessly, she gave it to me.
“Is it finished ” I asked.
She shook her head. “No. It is ready,” she replied. I handed her the money and took the blanket.
“It is beautiful, so skillfully woven (编织),” I said to my mother. “But what did she mean when she said it was not finished How can it be ready if it is not finished ”
“I will tell you later,” my mother said, “but first I will take you to the Navajo village.”
We went down to the village. A group of young men were making sand pictures. We walked through the whole village watching the different things the people were doing.
It was not until that evening that my mother finally explained the Navajo woman’s words.
“Did you notice anything about the things the people were making ” my mother asked.
“What should I have noticed ” I looked at her and asked.
“Each thing the Navajo make has one small part that is not complete. The designs in their sand pictures are often not perfectly done, for example— the line of a circle may not quite close. If you look carefully at your blanket, you will probably find a stitch missing.”
I took the blanket off, but it looked as perfect as any design could be. Then suddenly, I noticed that sure enough a stitch was missing!
“But why do the Navajo intentionally leave some tiny part unfinished ” I asked.
“They believe that when anything is completed or finished, it means the end has come — it will not be perfect until then. Then too, with a circle, they believe that they must leave a pathway for the bad spirits to run away and the good spirits to come in. So, often, they do not make the line close.”
4. What was true of the blanket the author received

C. To buy more things made by the Navajo.
D. To look for the woman who sold her the blanket.
6. Which of the following may the Navajo believe
A. A stitch in time is very important.
B. You must always try to make life complete.
C. He who makes no mistake is a perfect man.
D. Only when you die does life becomes perfect.
7. Which of the following is incorrect according to the passage
A. The missing stitch in the blanket reflects the Navajo’s values.
B. The writer speaks highly of the blanket the woman had woven.
C. The writer’s mother has a good appreciation of the belief the Navajo holds.
D. It was because of the missing stitch that the writer bought the perfect blanket.

When Emanuel received an email from Professor Richard English, Queen’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, encouraging him to apply for a PhD in Politics in Belfast, it was a pinch-me moment Emanuel never thought would be possible. After all, just a few short years ago, he was living on the streets couch-surfing at friends’ houses and weeding gardens to make ends meet. Now, one of the world’s leading political academics was preparing to welcome him to Queen’s University over 4,000 miles away.
Emanuel never knew who his father was and his mom was mentally ill when she gave birth to him, so the hospital took him off her and he was unofficially adopted for the first few years of his life. What followed was a childhood with uncertainty as Emanuel was passed between the adoption system and family members.
Through his high school and community college years, he moved from house to house, living with friends at times and living on the streets at others.
Determined to change all that despite his rocky start in life, Emanuel involved himself in school - doing everything he could to earn extra tuition money in his spare time. But getting accepted into university was hardly possible because a person like him couldn’t get a regular student loan.
Fortunately, the government backed him, having created a policy allowing disadvantaged persons to access funding for higher education. He graduated from the University of the West Indies with a 1st Class Honors degree and went on to do his Masters.
Emanuel knows that his story could have been very different. “I discovered Professor Richard English online and sent him an email honestly, not thinking he would reply and to my surprise, he did. I applied for the highly competitive Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme in order to fund my research at Queen’s. When I was told I was successful, my whole world changed.”
8. What does the underlined word “pinch-me” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Irreplaceable. B. Unbelievable. C. Desirable. D. Preferable.
9. What happened to Emanuel in his childhood
A. He was sometimes cared for by relatives.
B. He was abandoned by his sick mother.
C. His unknown father was mentally ill.
D. He lived with his friends now and then.
10 How did Emanuel afford his university education
A. By receiving a regular student loan. B. By earning the tuition all by himself.
C. By borrowing the money from friends. D. By benefiting from government policy.
11. What can we learn from Emanuel’s story
A. Well begun is half done. B. It’s never too old to learn.
C. You are the master of your life. D. Lost time is never found again.
D
Giving children access to literature is important. Educators, parents, and community members should help students develop a passion for reading. Not only is reading literature important in developing cognitive skills to be able to succeed in a school or work setting, but it is valuable for other reasons as well.
To begin with, children’s literature provides students with the opportunity to respond to literature and develop their own opinions about the topic. Quality literature allows for some difference in opinion. One reader may take something completely different away from the piece of literature than the next reader, based on the two personal viewpoints and experiences.
Besides, children’s literature provides an avenue for students to learn about their own cultural heritage and the cultures of other people. However, when teaching students about the cultural heritage (遗产) of others, one should be very careful in selecting which books to recommend. There are stories which contain stereotypes and inaccuracies about certain cultural groups. However, there are also children’s books that are more accurate in teaching the cultural differences of others.
Undoubtedly children’s literature also helps students develop emotional intelligence. Stories have the power to promote emotional and moral development. Children’s literature contains numerous moments of crisis, when characters make moral decisions and contemplate the reasons for their decisions, an important skill for children to see modeled It also encourages students to think deeper about their own feelings.
Children’s literature also encourages creativity. It plays an important role in nurturing and expanding the imagination. For instance, The House in the Night depicts the creativity a young girl has in her dreams at night, as she flies about the dark neighborhood on the wings of a bird. Children’s literature promotes the development of students’ internal imaginations.
Children’s literature should be valued because it fosters personality and social development. Children are very impressionable during the formative years, and children’s literature can help them develop into caring, intelligent, and friendly people. Being able to understand other people’s viewpoints and to not be selfish are important skills that adults must nurture in children. Children’s literature can foster social development by encouraging students to accept other people and their differences, thus becoming considerate people and growing into quality citizens.
Finally, children’s literature is invaluable in that it is a timeless tradition, one in which books are the major means of transmitting our literary heritage from one generation to the next. For a younger audience, children can build their cognitive and language skills through exposure to Mother Goose rhymes. Children in older grades can learn to appreciate the classic plays and messages of William Shakespeare in picture books. Children are only young for a short time, and so we must give them access to a basic literary heritage of timeless books. Quality children’s literature has the great power to captivate audiences for many generations.
Children’s literature is essential in both the school setting and at home. Teachers and parents should be able to differentiate between quality and ordinary literature in order to give students access to the best books to encourage these important values of literature.
12. What is the passage mainly about
A. The background of children’s literature. B. The significance of children’s literature
C. The characteristics of children’s literature. D. The various aspects of children’s literature.
13. What can be inferred from the passage
A. In Children’s literature, how characters make moral decisions can inspire kids.
B. It is completely up to parents to expose children to varieties of literature.
C. Ordinary Children’s literature is so valuable that it often benefits kids.
D. Without literature, children cannot develop into quality citizens.
14. How does the writer develop the last but one paragraph
A. By analyzing factors. B. By comparing facts.
C. By giving examples. D. By listing figures.
15. How is the passage organized (P: Paragraph)
A. B.

Dear fellows,
I am glad to give you a brief introduction to our school’s Labor Base: Happy Farm. The base serves the purpose of developing students’ sense of responsibility and team spirit, thus contributing to their overall development. It is also meant to help students learn about agricultural techniques and promote their awareness of protecting farmland.
A range of activities have been organized for students, where they learn about different steps of farming, such as tending to the field, sowing seeds, watering vegetables and harvesting. Meanwhile, lectures on smart agriculture are also given. Working on Happy Farm proves to be an enjoyable experience, where students realize that hard work, which affects their life positively, can be joyful work.
Thanks for your attention!
