Millions of moviegoers worldwide have been crazy about the same thing recently—the story of a difficult boy with panda eyes and shark-like teeth. Are you one of them
In the Ne Zha films, the boy named Ne Zha is born from the demon Orb (魔丸). The villagers all fear him. They believe he can only cause trouble. But when disaster falls upon his village, Ne Zha rises up like a superhero. He refuses to accept his fate (命运) or be remembered as a demon.

Yu Opera is one of the five main operas in China. It is the country’s leading local opera with the largest number of performers. Movies started in the late 1800s. In the early days, they were just short little clips (电影片段) that only lasted a minute or two. People would go to movie theaters and watch one or two of these short clips. 15 Nowadays, most movies are about 2 hours long and, over the years, movies have become a lot more popular and exciting.
Today, movies are a huge business. The most expensive movie ever cost over $300 million to produce! That’s a lot of money. 16 Some movies are such a big hit that they make a ton of money at the box office. The most successful movie of all time made over 2,700,000,000 dollars! That’s enough money to buy a private island. Some other movies, however, end up in total failure and lose a lot of money.
A lot of work goes into making a movie. 17 Then, directors must tell that story using cameras, actors, and special effects. Movies also need people to write the music and people to put everything together. It’s a big team project.
18 Many people want to be movie stars. They dream of being up on the big screen. A few actors have become rich and famous, making millions of dollars. But the movie business is also competitive (竞争的), so quite many of them fail to stand out (脱颖而出) or make real progress.
Movies are a big part of our culture. They bring us joy and excitement and have a way of touching our hearts. 19 Movies will always be a part of our lives.

You’ve probably never seen a movie quite like this one. Loving Vincent is the first animated film in the world to be made completely with paintings. Every scene was created by using oil paint on canvas (画布). Twelve paintings were needed just to show one second of the film. It took more than 100 artists seven years to complete it.
The movie has gotten good reviews (评论) since it came out on the Chinese mainland on Dec. 8. Its box office earnings have reached over $20 million (132.43 million yuan) worldwide, according to Variety.
The film tells the story of the final months of famous Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh (1853—1890). The story is told through his paintings and the characters in them. It shows his death as being part of a murder (谋杀) mystery, as Hollywood Reporter said.
A young man named Armand Roulin serves as both detective and storyteller. A year after the death of Vincent van Gogh, Armand is instructed by his father, Postman Joseph Roulin, to personally deliver a letter to Vincent’s brother, Theo. Armand doesn’t like Van Gogh, but to please his father, he agrees to deliver the letter, traveling across Europe to the town where Vincent spent his final months. When he finds that Theo has died of a disease shortly after his brother, he visits several important people in Van Gogh’s life to find out the truth behind his death. He talks with Van Gogh’s friend, a doctor, and the owner of the hotel he lived in. But each person tells a different story.
There are many examples of the artist’s work in the movie. The film shows over 120 of his paintings, such as The Night Cafe, Wheatfield With Crows, and The Starry Night. It’s no wonder Empire Magazine called it “one of the most beautiful films of 2017”.
The real-life letters that Van Gogh wrote to his brother are shown as well. The movie lets you see the real Vincent van Gogh in a different way.

Directed by Shen Ao, the film is based on real photos that show the terrible things Japanese soldiers did during the Nanjing Massacre (大屠杀). The story happens when Japanese soldiers took control of Nanjing. To stay alive, 3 groups of Chinese people hide inside a photo studio.
To survive, they have to help a Japanese army photographer develop his pictures. But while doing this, they discover something shocking. The photo films contain (包含) clear proof (证据) of the awful crimes Japanese soldiers committed (犯罪) all over the city. The group decides they must let the world know the truth. So they secretly keep the films and risk their lives to get them out safely.
The story in the movie is connected to a real person. In 1938, a 15-year-old boy named Luo Jin worked in Huadong Photo Studio in Nanjing. Chinese animated film Nobody《浪浪山小妖怪》 has become a dark horse sweeping the box office this summer. After 29 days, it had made over 1.4 billion yuan. Many people love it, giving it a high score of 8.6 out of 10 on Douban, a famous review website.
The story follows a small pig monster who lives in a place called Langlang Mountain. He works hard for the Cave King, but doesn’t know how to please the king and makes him angry. After losing his job, he decides to leave the mountain and teams up with three other small and nameless monsters. Together, they pretend (假装) to be the famous group from Journey to the West and start a dangerous journey to grow and find their true selves.
The film touches hearts because it shows the hardship (艰辛) of common people. The little monsters face big challenges and laugh at difficulties. Even though they are weak, they fight bravely. Many viewers (观众) say they see themselves in these characters, especially when they feel frustrated or stuck in hard situations.
Nobody also stands out for its beautiful art style. Made by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, it uses traditional Chinese painting skills. The story follows a small pig monster (妖怪) who lives in a place called Langlang Mountain. He works hard for the Cave King, but doesn’t know how to please the king and makes him angry. As young people, many of us dream of becoming “somebody” when we grow up. However, without enough courage or support, we often feel far away from this imagined goal. At times, strange thoughts come into our minds: Should we just give up and “lie flat” instead
Not the little piggy and his three friends from the animated (动画的) movie Nobody (无名之辈).
This past summer, their story made people laugh and encouraged tens of millions of moviegoers across China. The four little, nameless monsters (妖怪) dress up as characters from the famous film Journey to the West. They leave Langlang Mountain and set out on their own pilgrimage (朝圣之旅). Along the way, many other monsters laugh at their dreams. But the little pig and his friends don’t give up. They keep fighting “bad guys”, trying to live their own life.
Some say that Nobody is not just a movie, rather, it’s more like a mirror. In real life, many common people also choose to hold on to their dreams, even though they face great difficulties. One of them is Pang Zhongwang, now a star student graduating from Tsinghua University. Twenty-six years ago, however, he was born a poor “nobody” in a countryside of Hebei. His late (已故的) mother had a disability and couldn’t work. His father had a serious mental(精神) illness. Even though there were all these challenges, Pang, under his mother’s influence, grew up strong and happy. He started to take on family duties when he was very young. And deep in his heart, this “nobody” also dreamed of becoming “somebody”. He always achieved excellent grades in school through hard work. In 2017, he caught national attention by scoring an impressive 684 out of 750 in the gaokao.
Pang was luckier than the four monsters in Nobody. He was much closer to his dream of becoming “somebody”. The piggy and his friends, however, fail in their pilgrimage. But their courage is now remembered by many. In a way, they have grown to become “somebodies”, too.
Now, what do you want to do with your big dreams Clearly, if you “lie flat”, you’ll remain a “nobody”. We wish you good luck as you try to break out of your own “Langlang Mountain”!

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Many works about this history are being shown, like films, plays and dances. Among them, the movie Dead To Rights (南京照相馆) has caught a lot of attention.
Brave and clever, he secretly made over 30 copies of photos showing Japanese crimes. He put 16 photos into a book and drew a red heart with blood and the Chinese word “Chi” (which means “shame”) on the cover. Later, a young man named Wu Xuan kept the book safe. After eight years, the photos became strong proof of the crimes and were shown to the world.

Second, 2025 is the 80th anniversary of the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War (世界反法西斯战争). This makes people think more about history.
This movie is an important educational tool. It teaches us to value peace. But because there are some intense (激烈的) and disturbing scenes, the film is recommended for viewers over 18 years old. Younger viewers should watch it with their parents’ help.
