Kunqu Opera, one of the oldest traditional opera forms in China, was born in Kunshan, Suzhou. It is famous for its special patterns and has had a big influence on more recent forms of opera, such as Peking Opera.
Kunqu Opera has faced competition from popular culture in China. And at the beginning of the 21st century, Kunqu Opera faced a decline (衰落). Kunqu Opera performers retired (退休); audiences (观众) got old and fewer young people wanted to learn and enjoy the ancient art.
But in 2008, Kunqu Opera was added to Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (《人类非遗代表名录》). This not only brought Kunqu Opera to international attention, but also made Kunqu Opera popular again at home.
A “youth version (青春版)” of The Peony Pavilion (《牡丹亭》), created by the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theater and the famous writer Bai Xianyong, is considered another important move in the development of the art form. And it has been well received since it was performed for the first time around 20 years ago. With over 400 performances across China, as well as in countries such as the UK and the US, it has had about 800,000 audiences. As the play was performed at universities, Kunqu Opera saw a big increase in popularity, especially among young people.
The performers in the youth version of The Peony Pavilion were all in their early 20s at that time, and up to now, 70% of the audiences have also been young people. That is a very good sign.

Whether you have watched the film Never Say Never or not, you must have heard of its name. Since it came out on July 6, the film has grossed over 2.2 billion yuan, making it a big hit last year.
Adapted (改编) from real-life events, the film describes how ordinary people seek a way out from difficulties. For different reasons, lots of children become “wild” in the countryside. If nobody cares for them, it is easy for the kids to do bad things or even break the law. Worried about this, Xiang Tenghui, a wrestling coach, decides to help the kids out. He provides them with food and clothes, and more importantly, teaches them to practise wrestling, hoping to change their lives. Although they go through lots of difficulties and misunderstandings, they finally find a way out to pursue their future.
Wang Baoqiang, the director and lead actor of the film, said that it took him six years to produce the movie, which, to some degree, mirrors his own personal journey of seeking a breakthrough from his life.
Born in a small village in Henan Province, Wang began to study martial arts at 6 years old and had struggled as a stand-in actor (龙套) for a long time before becoming known to viewers because of the 2004 film A World Without Thieves. He then acted in lots of films and became more and more famous, but instead of standing still, he challenged himself to be a director. Although he went through a big change in his family life, he never gave up hope. Never Say Never, as the second film directed by him, fully shows his talent and hard work.
“The film has not only helped me get out of the difficult situation but also brought value and meaning to my own life,” Wang said.

Drama (戏剧) and the performing arts are excellent ways of building confidence (自信) in children. Learning through drama allows children to use their creativity, have fun and leave their shyness and worries behind. Drama also works by supporting the growth of imagination and other skills.
As cinema, television, and computer games are becoming more popular, entertainment (娱乐) has become rather passive (被动的). These screen-based methods are not good for communication. However, drama puts the “get-up-and-go” back into entertainment. Children have the chance to connect with others in a more meaningful way because drama encourages speech development and the use of body language.
Play and drama are closely connected. In a play or a drama, children can express themselves freely through mime (哑剧表演), movement, and speech to make education fun.
Children get confidence by understanding that there is no final answer in drama. They will learn that their opinion and actions are important. Children are able to give a personal response to many things and situations such as poverty, bullying, global warming and recycling. The things that drama can deal with are endless. Drama and education have a strong connection because drama can encourage children to take an active interest in other subjects such as geography, history, and English and so have a more rounded education. As a drama teacher, I saw some children unwilling to come to their first class, but now the same children run into my class with a smile. Drama helps children build confidence by allowing them to improvise (即兴创作) and experiment. Everyone is given the chance to shine within drama.
52.Can learning through drama help children deal with their shyness and worries
53.What do those screen-based methods have a bad influence on
54.Why does drama is a more meaningful way for children to connect with others
55.What can children do in a play or a drama

On the subway, by the bus stop...we often see people watching micro-dramas on apps like Kuaishou and Douyin. These dramas have been on the rise over the past few years. In 2023, micro-dramas made more than 35 billion yuan, the same as 70 percent of the money made by China’s film industry, reported China Daily on Sep 27.
Chinese micro-dramas are also going strong around the world. Sensor Tower, a US company, said that over 40 apps for watching the dramas have entered the global (全球) market. By early 2024, these apps already had around 55 million downloads. One of them, ReelShort, has been downloaded more times than Netflix on the Apple Store in the US, reported Reuters.
International viewers (观众) find these micro-dramas exciting to watch, reported Xinhua. The stories are usually fast-paced (快节奏的) and have many surprising twists (转折). This keeps people’s attention and makes them fun, Liu Jinlong, head of the app Short TV, told Xinhua.
The short length of the dramas adds to their popularity. Each episode (集) may last from only tens of seconds to two minutes. People can finish a micro-drama in short periods of time, such as on their way to work.
Going forward, micro-dramas could open new doors for China’s cultural exports (输出), noted MIT Technology Review. However, one challenge to be solved is that many of them have similar themes. The dramas should cover more topics, not just the usual ones like time travel, Li Jiang, head of Dianzhong Tech, a company in Beijing, told China Daily.

Feeling sad or upset Don’t turn to a happy movie. A sad movie may be just what you need.
A team of scientists at Ohio State University, US, has found that sad movies can make people happier. They published their study in a magazine. Scientists asked 361 college students to watch a sad movie called Atonement. The movie tells the story of two lovers who are separated and die in the end during World War II. Before and after the movie, the students answered questions, testing how happy they were with their lives. They also answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to measure different feelings, including sadness.
Results showed that people felt better after watching the movie. Scientists believe this is because the movie made them think about their own lives and relationships. Their lives, compared with those of the unlucky lovers on the screen, were full of hope. “I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
The leader of the study explained that negative moods make people more thoughtful. “Positive feelings are generally a signal that everything is fine, you don’t have to worry, you don’t have to think about problems in your life,” she said, “but negative feelings, like sadness, make you think about your situation. So seeing a sad movie may make you sad, but that will cause you to think about your own close relationships and be thankful to them.”
62.According to the text, which movie is better for upset people, a happy movie or a sad movie

Pretty, sweet, and always putting on a big smile is how those who know Wang Wanna think of her.
On stage, Wang always takes on a totally different look. For a 27-year-old, half of her life has been spent singing Yueju Opera, which is the most popular opera style following Peking Opera in China. Standing on the stage, she pours herself into the stories, and also adds her own dreams and feelings to the characters she plays.
With the support of her parents, Wang left home at 13 and went to Shanghai to learn Yueju Opera. She said that she did not understand what Yueju Opera was until the second year when she watched Romance of the Western Chamber (西厢记), a Chinese classic. She was deeply touched by the story. That was the moment when she fell in love with the art form she was going to devote herself to. She was trained to play the roles of young men in Yueju Opera since the very beginning and has now grown into an excellent actress in Sbanghai Yueju Opera House.
Wang did a lot for Yueju Opera. On the stage, she tried her best to play a good role. “It could be that among people who come into the theater to watch our show, many come for the first time. A small mistake made on the stage might leave them with a bad feeling of Yueju Opera,” she said.
However, compared with other popular art forms such as modern drama and talk shows, Yueju Opera is still not very familiar to most people. As a result, off the stage, Wang makes some videos to introduce the art of Yueju Opera to young people online. “I really hope to find a way to open a door for people of my age to fall in love with Yueju Opera,” said Wang.
66.How long has Wang Wanna learned Yueju Opera

What Do You Feel Like Watching Today
While some people stick to only one kind of movies, I like to watch different kinds depending on how I feel that day.
When I’m down or tired, I prefer movies that can cheer me edies and cartoons have funny dialog and usually have a happy ending. The characters may not be perfect, but they try their best to solve their problems. After I watch them, my problems suddenly seem less serious and I feel much better again. Laughing for two hours is a good way to relax!
I don’t watch dramas or documentaries when I’m sad or tired. Dramas make me feel even sadder. Documentaries can be interesting. But when I’m tired I don’t want to think too much. I don’t mind action movies when I’m too tired to think. I can just shut off my brain, sit back and enjoy watching an exciting superhero who always saves the world just in time.
Once in a while, I like to watch movies that are scary. They can be fun, but I’m too scared to watch them alone. I always bring a friend who isn’t afraid of this kind of movies, and it doesn’t feel so scary anymore.

Did you watch the movie Changjin Lake (《长津湖》) It’s about how the new China helped North Korea to push back the American soldiers (士兵). It is not only the movie itself that makes people touched, but the heroes of the war who fought for our country and the people.
Let’s take a close look at the real-life history behind the movie. Changjin Lake is in North Korea. The Battle (战役) of Changjin Lake was in a very cold winter with temperatures of around -40℃. In the 1950s, our Chinese soldiers had to face life-and-death problems when they got on the train to enter the DPRK. A US enemy plane bombed (轰炸) the trains, and the soldiers had to quickly move into the mountains and forests to hide. I still deeply remember a picture in the movie. In order not to expose the target (暴露目标), they stayed in the ice and snow without any moving. Although the follow-up troops (后续部队) killed the enemy and won the battle, unluckily, 125 soldiers were frozen (冻) to death. This is a movie about war and people. Many can’t help crying after watching this movie, because our Chinese soldiers used their lives to guard the country and the people.
It is the loveliest persons who guarded China’s great river and mountains. However, many of them never have the chance to see the beautiful mountains and rivers again. The movie Changjin Lake wants to tell young people today: though we live in an age without war, we should never forget the true heroes in the history and we need to pass on their great spirit!

Chang’an, an animated movie based on the Tang Dynasty (618-907), brings to life some of the most iconic figures in Chinese literary history. Featuring famous poets such as Li Bai and Du Fu, the movie follows the interweaving paths of Libai, Gao Shi, Wang Changling, Zhang Xu, Li Guinian, and Princess Yuzhen. With a runtime of 168 minutes, it is the longest of any Chinese animated movie, and has garnered an 8.2 out of 10 rating on Douban.
The movie is faithful to the Tang Dynasty’s artistic style, and employs an unconventional perspective (非传统视角) to tell the story. It begins with Gao Shi’s recollections of Li Bai, and chronicles the changes of Li’s life, as well as the transition of the Tang Dynasty from peak to turmoil (混乱). Additionally, it captures the nature of the Tang Dynasty by showcasing the bustling streets of ancient Chang’an and the vibrant and prosperous city of Yangzhou, as well as the harsh and snowy borderlands in Northwest China.
In order to accurately express the Tang poetry and better translate the cultural context embedded in the dialogue, the production team invited Linda Jaivin, an Australian Sinologist (汉学家), to assist with the translation process.
Additionally, the creators travelled to major historical sites depicted in the movie, to help them understand the helplessness and pain that the characters faced when faced with formidable forces.
The movie features a total of 48 poems, and Qiang Jin Jiu (Invitation to Wine), one of Li Bai’s masterpieces, is the centerpiece of the most visually amazing scene. The animation production for this poem alone took two years, and the overall production of the film spanned three years.
Chang’an marks the latest effort of Light Chaser Animation Studios, and is the first installment (作品) of their new franchise (系列), New Culture. Through this work, they hope to reinterpret (重新解释) historical figures and classic works through the medium of animation, and to attract more foreign audience to appreciate Chinese poets such as Li Bai and Du Fu.
78.How long is the movie
79.How did the production team ensure the better translation of the poetry and cultural context

I became crazy about Beijing Opera when I was a little boy. It’s hard to explain why I love it. I even dreamed of becoming a professional performer. I’ve learned a lot about Beijing Opera since I joined the school Chinese Culture Club. Let me introduce something about it to you.
Beijing Opera is one of the Chinese traditional drama art forms and the largest Chinese opera form. Having a history of about 200 years, it is developed from many other drama forms, mostly from the local drama “Huiban”. It was especially popular in south China during the 18th century.
Theatrical (戏剧的) art forms in many other countries do not have singing, dancing and spoken parts together in one single drama. An opera singer, for example, neither dances nor speaks on stage; there are no singing or dancing parts in a modern play; in a dance drama, the dancer doesn’t speak or sing. However, Beijing Opera includes spoken parts, singing and dancing.
Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, one of the most famous performers of all, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
As one of Chinese national treasures, Beijing Opera is full of Chinese cultural traditions and it is loved by Chinese people of all ages. Welcome to China and enjoy Beijing Opera.
