1 Read the passage and answer the questions.
I’m a student at the Confucius Institute. Many learners think Chinese is the most difficult language to learn because of its tones and grammar. That may be true, but I think it’s also interesting and fun. Here are my tips for learning Chinese.
First, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. In Chinese, a different tone can mean a totally different word. When I began to learn Chinese, it was so hard for me. One day, I called a horse (mǎ) mother (mā). That made my friends laugh to tears. But that didn’t stop me from trying. I made fun of myself and repeated the words loudly. After a lot of practice, I can say the tones correctly now.
Second, use your imagination in learning Chinese. Chinese characters are like drawings. They are amazing. I take them as pictures when I am writing the characters.
There are many interesting findings. For example, the character,鱼(fish), looks like a fish. It helps me a lot. Third, find out how you learn best. In China, a primary school student can write about 3,000 Chinese characters. That’s amazing. How can they do it They listen to songs, play games, or recite rhymes and poems. They also read and write a little every day. I tried many ways. I learned simple Chinese songs and poems. It was so much fun to listen and practice.
As my Chinese teacher often says, “Read more, write more, speak more, and listen more.” I believe I will reach a better level if I practice more.
