Unit 3
Lesson 5 I made it!
Learning objectives
In this lesson, we will be able to:
Learn vocabulary related to learning difficulties and achievements, such as “fail the exam” “make progress” “make mistakes”, etc., and understand the context-based usage of these words.
Through reading the story about Peter, we can improve our reading comprehension skills, including extracting key information, understanding the plot development, and making inferences.
Be inspired to face learning difficulties bravely and develop a positive attitude towards learning. We will also understand the importance of perseverance and the help of friends in the learning process. At the same time, we can gain cultural awareness as Peter comes from Mexico and English is not his first language, which helps us understand language-learning challenges in a multicultural context.
1 Read the story and answer the questions.
Peter left Miss Martin’s classroom, feeling like a loser. Krista, his friend, noticed him looking sad.
“What’s wrong, Peter ” asked Krista.
“I just failed my English exam,” replied Peter. “I made too many spelling mistakes.”
Peter was from Mexico. English was not his first language.
“No worries! You need to make a little progress every day,” said Krista.
The next day, she gave Peter a book: The Top 500 Most Often Misspelled Words.
“There are 125 days until the final exam,” said Krista. “Every day you learn four of those words. Soon, you will master them all.”
Although Peter felt that was not easy for him, he accepted the challenge. Peter practiced every day, and he invented a word memory game with his little sister. They both found it interesting to learn English.
On the last day of class, Miss Martin excitedly presented Peter with a very special award: the Most-Improved Student Award.
Peter felt so happy. After school, he shared the good news with Krista.
“I made it!” he said. “Thanks for your help!”
“Good for you, Peter! I am proud of you. You put in the hard work yourself!” said Krista.
