“For a long time, I thought poetry and mountain biking were complete opposites and would not go together at all,” says Mackenzie Myatt, a cyclist and writer from Canada, who just published her first poetry book, In Defense of Big Dreams, which goes around her lifelong love of mountain biking.
As long as Myatt can remember, she has been writing poetry and riding bikes. The two things were very separate sides of her—the sporty, competitive side and the part that loved books and writing, playing with language. It was only too mechanical to try to put them together until Myatt took ownership of her training and started digging into the mental and emotional side of sport. That's when it really clicks with poetry.
Mountain bikers talk about the idea of flow quite a lot. During racing, the goal is to be able to achieve a flow state and be super smooth as everything is happening automatically without thinking. The feeling of inspiration in writing is similar to the flow state on a mountain bike.
The flow can bring a sense of joy, which can then turn into a positive feedback loop between Myatt's pursuits. “When I feel joy, I want to write about it now. But also, if I'm writing about joy, it encourages me to notice joy more often in daily tasks or riding bikes,” Myatt says.
In a sense, Myatt's new book marks a successful new connection between the bike and the poetry, which not only runs throughout the book's pages, but throughout her life, too. “The book is designed to inspire girls in sport and in life, but I really think the messages are universal and I hope that everyone can enjoy this book and act on their potential.”

The man walked down the trail on a cold day. This was his first winter in Alaska. He was on his way to a camp near Henderson Creek. His friends were already there. He expected to reach Henderson Creek by six o'clock that evening. It would be dark by then.
He continued his way until he came to a frozen stream called Indian Creek. He began to walk on the snow covered ice. It was a trail that would lead him straight to Henderson Creek and his friends.
Then he had to walk around a part of the frozen stream, where an underground spring flowed under the ice, which made the ice thin. If he stepped there, he might break through the ice into a pool of water. To get his boots wet in such cold weather might kill him.
At a place where the snow seemed very solid, the ice suddenly broke. The man's feet sank into the water. It was not deep, but his legs got wet to the knees. Now he had to build a fire to dry his clothes and boots. He collected pieces of dry grass and wood, pulled off his gloves, took out his matches, and lit the fire.
Now, the fire was beginning to burn strongly. He was safe. He sat under the tree and thought of the old men in Fairbanks. They had told him that no man should travel alone when the temperature was sixty degrees below zero. Yet here he was. He had had an accident so he was alone. And to save himself, he had built a fire.
Suddenly, without warning, a heavy mass of snow dropped down just onto the fire. He reached into his pocket for the matches again. But his fingers were frozen. He couldn't hold them and all the matches fell onto the snow. He tried to pick one up, but failed. Seeing the matches, he couldn't do anything …

B. There was an underground spring flowing under the ice.
C. The fire he started with the wood he carried melted the ice.
D. He and his stuff were too heavy and the stream was not frozen.
( ) 7. What can we infer about the man from the passage
A. He was not really in danger.
B. He still had ways to start another fire.
C. He was spotted and rescued by his friends.
D. He regretted not taking the old men's advice.

One of the most commonly asked questions in the English language is “How are you?” and whether a person is feeling happy or sad, excited or lonely, fantastic or heartbroken they will just about always answer “Fine.” Why is this Is it because humans are not good at expressing their emotions Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation. However, for centuries, people have often expressed their emotions on paper, in the form of poetry.
The beauty of poetry is that the emotions the poet is trying to convey are often disguised in images so that the poet can maintain a feeling of privacy. For example, in Li Bai's poem, Seeing Meng Haoran Off at Yellow Crane Tower, the poet describes the sail of his friend's boat disappearing into the distance while he watches the river rolling by. This could seem merely like the description of a beautiful scene, but by reading into the poem, you can sense the deep sadness and loneliness that his friend's leaving has caused him.
Poetry is also written to celebrate positive human emotions like joy, love and happiness. Throughout history, men and women have written poems to their loved ones to express their deep feelings. Poems about nature, which express the poet's appreciation of the beauty in the world around him or her, are also common. Sadly, many poems have also been written to express anger at the destruction of nature and reactions to horrific events like war and death.
The interesting thing about poetry is that anyone reading a poem can have their own view or feelings about it and heated discussions can often arise over what the poet was originally trying to say or express. Poetry can be interpreted in many different ways. Often, a poem that one person loves is what another hates. Equally, a poem that one person understands and relates to, may turn another person off.
( ) 8. What is the purpose of questions in Paragraph 1
A. To introduce a topic.
B. To teach people how to start a conversation.
C. To have empathy with readers.
D. To review the commonly asked questions.
( ) 9. What does the underlined word “disguised” in the second paragraph mean
A. Seen. B. Described. C. Hidden. D. Disclosed.
( )10. According to the author, which of the following is NOT false
A. Humans wish they could be better at expressing their feelings.
B. Many human emotions are very hard to capture in casual conversations.
C. Human emotions are too intense and wide ranging to be expressed by most people.
D. Poetry is the most important way to express people's inner feelings.
( )11. According to the author, what makes poetry particularly interesting
A. The difference in how different readers interpret and appreciate a poem.
B. The imagery that a poet can use to express emotions can be misunderstood by the reader.
C. The ability of the reader to clearly understand the meaning of a poem.
D. Poets' unique description and fantastic language about poems.

In 1957, English scientist James Lovelock invented the Electron Capture Detector, an inexpensive, sensitive device used to help measure the spread of poisonous man made compounds(化合物) in the environment. The device provided the scientific foundations of Rachel Carson's 1962 book, Silent Spring, a push for the environmental movement. It also helped provide the basis for regulations in the United States and in other nations that banned harmful chemicals like DDT and PCBs.
Later, his discovery that chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs)—compounds that are used in refrigerators and air conditioners—were present in measurable concentrations in the atmosphere led to the discovery of a hole in the ozone layer(臭氧层). He also explained that they posed no possible danger to the planet. A year after his paper in Nature, Mario Molina of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and F. Sherwood Rowland of the University of California at Irvine published a paper in the same journal detailing how sensitive the Earth's ozone layer is to CFCs. In 1995 they were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work in reminding the world of the thinning of the ozone layer. Lovelock later called his conclusion a mistake.
But Dr. Lovelock may be most widely known for his Gaia theory that the Earth acts as a “living organism” that can “control its temperature and chemistry in a state of comfortable stability(稳定性)”. As an expert on the chemical composition of the atmospheres of Earth and Mars, Dr. Lovelock wondered why Earth's atmosphere was so stable. He hypothesized(假定) that something must control heat, oxygen, nitrogen, and other ingredients. He presented his theory in 1967. That summer, the novelist William Golding, his friend, suggested the name Gaia, after the Greek goddess of the Earth.
The hypothesis may never have moved into the scientific mainstream without the contribution of Lynn Margulis, an American microbiologist. In the early 1970s and in the decades that followed, she worked with Dr. Lovelock on specific studies to support this concept. Since then, Dr. Lovelock's theory of a self controlling Earth has been considered important to understanding the causes and consequences of global warming.
( )12. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about
A. The functions of man made compounds.
B. The importance of banning harmful chemicals.

A. CFCs did little harm to the Earth.
B. It was impossible to find CFCs in thin air.

( )14. What inspired James Lovelock to produce his Gaia theory
A. Earth's atmosphere remains stable.

Some individuals are born with a gift for public speaking. __16__ Do you want to be a good public speaker Here are some principles you must master.
People want to listen to someone who is interesting, relaxed and comfortable. Too often when you stand up to give a speech, you focus on the “public” at the expense of the “speaking”. __17__ Focus on the speaking. Talk directly to your audience, be yourself and make a connection.
Even the most successful public speaker will make mistakes. Yet, the only one who cares about any mistake is the one who is speaking. People's attention wanders constantly. In fact, most people only absorb about 20 per cent of a speaker's message. So, don't stop speaking when you make a mistake unless it's a truly serious one. __18__
Your goal is not to be a perfect public speaker. __19__ And like everything else in life, that takes practice. Remember, even world champion athletes practise their skills on a consistent basis.
__20__ It's rare to hear someone say, “I wish that speaker had spoken longer.” On the other hand, you probably can't count the times that you've thought, “I'm glad that talk is over. It seemed to go on forever!” So surprise your audience. Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated. It's better to leave your listeners wishing for more than shifting restlessly in their seats waiting for your speech finally to end.
A. Do the opposite.
B. You want to be an effective public speaker.
C. You don't need to apologize for a minor slip.
D. When it comes to public speaking, less is usually more.
E. The objective of most speeches is to benefit the audience.
F. Take the fear out of public speaking by focusing on your listeners.
G. However, the majority of people are effective speakers because they train to be.

Molly and Maye were good friends, like sisters, not only because they were always in the same class, but also because they shared an interest—both of them were crazy about acting.
Before this summer holiday, their school was to hold the annual “School Play”, wanting a whole set of actors. That was their luck. “I'd like to play a role in the show,” Molly told herself.
After reading the notice, she learned that the play was named Rapunzel, who was a magic princess. Another leading role was an evil witch(女巫) stealing Rapunzel to keep herself young forever. Immediately, Molly and Maye were both attracted by the role of “princess”. Apart from them, there were about twenty other girls interested in this role as well. So an audition(试镜) would be needed to choose the most suitable one.
“Do you really want to play the princess, Maye?” they walked home, arm in arm.
“Yes, a little. And you?” Maye replied.
Long silence …
Several weeks before the audition, they practiced and practiced. With time speeding by, Molly's confidence grew and she felt happy with her acting.
The morning of the audition arrived at last. Unbelievable! So many students crowded into the school hall to appreciate and witness the moment. Nervous though Molly was, she took a deep breath and recalled what she had practiced. During the audition, she tried her best to present her best self, and she was sure that she could make it.
After an anxiety filled hour, the result of the audition came out. Molly didn't even dare to check the result in person. Standing outside the crowd, she heard someone shouting,“Maye is the princess!” What was worse, Molly was shocked to learn that she was given the role of “witch”!

根据倒数第二段中“The flow can bring a sense of joy, which can then turn into a positive feedback loop between Myatt's pursuits.”
根据第一段“‘For a long time, I thought poetry and mountain biking were complete opposites and would not go together at all,’ says Mackenzie Myatt, a cyclist and writer from Canada, who just published her first poetry book, In Defense of Big Dreams, which goes around her lifelong love of mountain biking.”和最后一段中“In a sense, Myatt's new book marks a successful new connection between the bike and the poetry, which not only runs throughout the book's pages, but throughout her life, too.”
根据倒数第二段中“He had had an accident so he was alone.”
根据第二段“He continued his way until he came to a frozen stream called Indian Creek. He began to walk on the snow covered ice. It was a trail that would lead him straight to Henderson Creek and his friends.”
根据第三段中“Then he had to walk around a part of the frozen stream, where an underground spring flowed under the ice, which made the ice thin.”
根据倒数第二段中“He sat under the tree and thought of the old men in Fairbanks. They had told him that no man should travel alone when the temperature was sixty degrees below zero. Yet here he was. He had had an accident so he was alone. And to save himself, he had built a fire.”

根据第一段中“Why is this Is it because humans are not good at expressing their emotions Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation. However, for centuries, people have often expressed their emotions on paper, in the form of poetry.”
根据第一段中“One of the most commonly asked questions in the English language is ‘How are you?’ and whether a person is feeling happy or sad, excited or lonely, fantastic or heartbroken they will just about always answer ‘Fine.’”和“Maybe it is just that emotions are often too personal or too complex to be shared in a casual conversation.”
根据最后一段中“The interesting thing about poetry is that anyone reading a poem can have their own view or feelings about it and heated discussions can often arise over what the poet was originally trying to say or express.”

It also helped provide the basis for regulations in the United States and in other nations that banned harmful chemicals like DDT and PCBs.”
根据第二段中“Later, his discovery that chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs)—compounds that are used in refrigerators and air conditioners … in the ozone layer. He also explained that they posed no possible danger to the planet.”
根据倒数第二段中“As an expert on the chemical composition of the atmospheres of Earth and Mars, Dr. Lovelock wondered why Earth's atmosphere was so stable. He hypothesized that something must control heat, oxygen, nitrogen, and other ingredients.”
根据最后一段中“In the early 1970s and in the decades that followed, she worked with Dr. Lovelock on specific studies to support this concept. Since then, Dr. Lovelock's theory of a self controlling Earth has been considered important to understanding the causes and consequences of global warming.”

One possible version:
Last Saturday, I just visited an exhibition titled “Meeting Artists” held by our city's museum.
The exhibition attracted many masters and amateurs at home and abroad. Many artworks including Chinese calligraphy works and landscape paintings from ancient and modern times were on show. The host explained every work in detail on the spot and the exhibition left a deep impression on me.
In my view, it not only promoted the inheritance of Chinese traditional culture but strengthened our national pride as well. I hope there will be more activities like this in the future.
One possible version:
Molly_rushed_home_and_burst_out_crying_when_her_mother_came. After her mother knew about everything, she smiled, “Dear, why not try your best to make the witch impressed Maybe you are the best.” Molly jerked up her head as if awake from a dream. She kissed her mother in gratitude and got ready immediately. She carefully analyzed the witch's personality traits and body language, consulted professionals, and looked up information about the relevant characters. As she learned more, her confidence grew gradually.
A_few_days_later,_the_big_day_for_the_play_arrived. The performance was a great success. Molly's performance as the witch was as impressive as Maye's as the princess, and the applause from the audience continued, which made Molly cry with joy. And her friend Maye also hugged her deeply and whispered, “If I had played a witch, I might not be as good as you.” Molly also understood a truth: no matter what role you play, as long as it is taken seriously, it will make people impressed.
