Period 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading(1)
Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。
Our preference for this or that kind of music is obviously a subjective(主观的) matter. It can also be highly unstable(不稳定的), changing not only during a lifetime, but even on a scale of months, or even days. Yet despite such variety, there are three factors that I think are the main contributors(因素).①
The first is our upbringing, or the musical background which surrounded us in our formative years(性格形成时期). The kinds of music that we were exposed to when we were small helped to create very specific mental patterns.②
However, even the most stable musical pattern can be changed by socio cultural concerns, and these form the second contributor to our musical preferences. Music, probably from the very beginning of the existence of modern humans, has been used to bring people together in various kinds of activities, because it is really efficient at regulating(调节) the bodily and emotional responses of large groups of participants. Whether you're into heavy metal, or hip hop, or jazz, your preferences are guided in part by your desire to be a member of some social circle.
These two factors seem to suggest that musical preferences are formed unconsciously, without the listener being aware of it, but this is obviously not the case.③ Nothing is likely to be more important than our own subjective feeling at the time of listening. Especially today, with nearly unlimited access to all styles of music, we use music as a tool for regulating our emotions and moods. This is why when you want to study, you might reach for something simple, without words.④ Or when you're trying to relax before bed, you'll probably listen to something calming. All of these point to the fantastic flexibility of music in our lives.

Curbelo was born and raised in Santa Clara, a small Cuban(古巴的) city. Later, she moved to Havana to continue her studies and played in popular Cuban bands.
When the first Argentine restaurant in Shanghai opened up, she came into China.
It gave Chinese audiences a chance to enjoy her music. “I hesitated(犹豫) in the beginning because I didn't think there was room for Latino(拉美) culture in a country with so much traditional culture,” she admitted, quickly adding, “But the advice to be a violinist in a traditional Cuban group seemed like a fantastic chance to get to know this beautiful country. So I came to China at last.”
This musical journey took her all across China—touring, recording and even producing music for famous brands. Among her most memorable moments, she listed the opening of the World Expo(世博会) 2010 in Shanghai, where she had the opportunity to perform with the famous Italian musician Andrea Bocelli and other foreign artists.
A musician's week is never normal. In addition to a busy schedule, each day is different from the last. Luckily, there is some free time when she can do something she likes. In her free time she always records or visits the shows of other musicians.

Research shows that 43,000 years ago our ancestors were making music. The fact that music has been with us for so long explains why it affects us both mentally and physically. Tears can uncontrollably well up even in the most hardened eyes when Bruce Springsteen sings The River. It's hard not to nod your head with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts' I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll. And you might not be human if you don't feel an urge to dance while listening to Taylor Swift's Shake It Off. We have evolved(进化) to feel music.
There's plentiful evidence that humans really feel music, but are the feelings universal If humans from different cultures listen to the same songs, will they respond in the same way That's what a team of Chinese and Finnish researchers wanted to find out.
In a recent experiment, they presented nearly 2,000 participants from the United Kingdom, the United States, and China with different songs and asked them to describe where they felt the music in their bodies. For this, the researchers gave each subject blank outlines of a human and asked them to color the regions where they felt changing activity in their bodies.
The researchers found that all the participants responded to the songs in nearly the same way. “Across both cultures, happy and danceable songs activated the arms, legs, and the head. In contrast, sad, gentle, and scary songs activated mainly the chest and head regions,” the researchers described. “The results suggest similar bodily feelings of musical emotions across distant cultures.” Furthermore, the results show that humans feel music in the same way regardless of language and familiarity. Participants from one culture were not very familiar with the others' songs. Instead, their bodies were responding to specific acoustic(听觉的) clues.
However, the researchers note that their experiment only analyzed two cultures, meaning it's possible that people living in a faraway part of the world would react to music very differently, which will be the highlight of their further study.
( ) 5. What do the songs mentioned in Paragraph 1 feature
A. Danceable beats.
B. Traditional styles.
C. Emotional impact.
D. Confusing content.
( ) 6. What do the Chinese and Finnish researchers aim to do
A. Understand the history of music.
B. Explore people's feelings for music.
C. Compare cultural differences in songs.
D. Study songs' effect on physical health.

A. All types of music activate the legs.
B. Humans respond similarly to music.
C. Familiar songs inspire more feelings.
D. People learn language through music.
( ) 8. What will the team do in the future
A. Create new music types.

Gong Linna, well known Chinese musician and founder of Chinese New Art Music, put her music teaching methods to practice for the first time at the Tracing Roots practice concert and music festival of the Affiliated High School of Peking University on May 23.
The first song of the concert, Search High and Low, is an allusion(暗指) to the classical poem Li Sao(《离骚》), “The road ahead will be long. I shall search high and low.” “It's arranged to be sung by all performers, indicating that we should all search high and low for our roots,” Gong said.
To explore the education and the popularization of Chinese music, in 2017, Gong established a research and development team, which includes ethnomusicologist, Du Yaxiong, and music historian, Zhao Zhongming, to introduce her music teaching methods and summarize the vocal skills of Chinese music.
Gong believed that the popularization of Chinese music should rely on primary and secondary schools rather than music academies. The children's passion for music and their outstanding performance amazed Gong, “When singing, they are completely absorbed in the music. Music brings light and richness to one's spiritual world. So, learning to sing is never about passing examinations, but about enjoying the music.”
Lu Yueming, instructor of the school's art center, said, “The children worked really hard and kept in mind Gong's instructions. Seeing their performance, I know that they truly fell in love with traditional Chinese music.”
“Seeing the children perform my pieces, I realized I should write more songs for them,” Lao Luo, Gong's husband said proudly. “It's a great encouragement for me to see how much they like the songs, and they really need content related to Chinese culture.” With an international vision, Gong will continue to write songs based on Chinese folk music or ancient poems.
Gong said children should learn about the beauty of Chinese music. Only when you know about your own sounds, can you have cultural confidence.

B. Because people are expected to search their roots.

When officials from Brazil's Indigenous(原住民的) protection agency approached the hut in the middle of the Amazon rainforest, their fears were confirmed: They were witnessing the first recorded dying out of an uncontacted tribe in the country's history.
The man lying there, the last member of his tribe, had died and with him an entire culture and answers to a thousand questions.
Even his name was a mystery. He was known only as “the Man of the Hole” because of the dozens of holes he had dug over the years in his territory. His age, too, could only be guessed at. He appeared to be about 60, officials said.
It was a sad milestone for a country that in recent years has seen protections for Indigenous groups undermined by an administration that has prioritized(优先) development of the Amazon over conservation.
In Rondo∧nia, the only resident of the 8,000 hectare area lived in complete isolation for at least 26 years after the rest of his group was killed by ranchers(农场主) advancing the agricultural frontier.
Brazil's Indigenous protection agency, Funai, made direct contact with the last surviving man only in 1996. Marcelo dos Santos, an Indigenous expert, who led the Funai exploit that met the man, said he was found hiding in his hut. “We tried to establish a conversation and offered corn and arrows, but he was terrified and very aggressive. From this moment on, we had to respect his isolation.”
Even with protection in place, the territory suffered widespread deforestation up until about 13 years ago. Attacks on the last surviving man continued, as well, including one by armed gunmen in 2009, according to local news reports.
“For me, he was somehow a miracle: to be able to survive on his own, not speak to anybody and avoid all contact maybe out of grief or determination,” said Fiona Watson, a research director at Survival International, a London based rights organization.
( ) 1. What did the death of “the Man of the Hole” suggest
A. An uncontacted tribe went extinct.
B. An entire culture would be recorded.
C. The secrets around him would be unearthed.
D. The protection agency was unwilling to rescue him.
( ) 2. The underlined word “undermined” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. strengthened B. monitored C. sought D. weakened
( ) 3. What happened to “the Man of the Hole” in 1996
A. He made the protection agency's approach a failure.
B. He witnessed the most severe deforestation in history.
C. He escaped being shot by a group of aggressive gunmen.
D. He learned more survival skills with arrows offered by Funai.
( ) 4. What did Fiona Watson regard “the Man of the Hole” as
A. A mystery. B. An evolution.
C. A wonder. D. A fortune.

Samuel is a student from the UK. He never studied the piano. However, he can play very difficult musical pieces by musicians such as Chopin and Beethoven just a few minutes after he hears them. He learns a piece of music by listening to it in parts. Then he thinks about the notes in his head. Two years ago, he played his first piece Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. He surprised everyone around him.
Amazed that he remembered this long and difficult piece of music and played it perfectly, his teachers say Samuel is unbelievable.① They say his ability is very rare, but Samuel doesn't even realize that what he can do is special. Samuel wanted to become a lawyer as it was the wish of his parents, but music teachers told him he should study music instead. Now, he studies law and music.
Samuel can't understand why everyone is so surprised. “I grew up with music. My mother played the piano and my father played the guitar. About two years ago, I suddenly decided to start playing the piano, without being able to read music and without having any lessons.② It comes easily to me—I hear the notes and can bear them in mind—each and every note,” says Samuel.
Recently, Samuel performed a piece during a special event at his college. The piece had more than a thousand notes. The audience was impressed by his amazing performance. He is now learning a piece that is so difficult that many professional pianists can't play it.③ Samuel says confidently, “It's all about super memory—I guess I have that gift.”
However, Samuel's ability to remember things doesn't stop with music.④ His family says that even when he was a young boy, Samuel heard someone read a story, and then he could retell the story word for word.

Adele's new album, 30, is finally available. Last month, hundreds of millions of us streamed its first single, Easy on Me. This song arouses feelings not easily put into words, but we can probably agree it is a sad song. __1__ Yet sad music does pull us in and lift us up.
Let's start with a biological theory. When we experience real life loss, or empathize(产生共鸣) with another's pain, certain hormones are released within us. __2__ They do so by making us feel calmed and supported. Feeling Adele's pain, or recalling our own, may cause such chemical changes within us.
__3__ Feeling moved can come from us suddenly feeling closer to other people. Indeed, when we have listened to 30, we may turn to reaction videos to see how others feel. This lets us share an emotional experience with others. And it boosts our feeling of being moved and triggers(激发) feelings of comfort and belonging.
We can also think at the spiritual level. Adele's songs allow us to view the pleasure in terms of the meaning she helps us make. Adele takes hard life experiences and makes sense of them. This is what sad art does. __4__ As philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once put it, someone who has a why to live for can bear almost anyhow.
Ultimately, we listen to Adele's songs when we want to recall, reflect, or belong. They let us feel her sadness, share our suffering, and connect with others. To all of us, Adele's songs say: __5__
A. You are not alone in your pain.
B. Life is meaningless without sad music.
C. These help us to deal with loss and pain.
D. Few people are aware sad music makes us feel good.
E. This may make us better prepared when real loss strikes.
F. It takes the pain and suffering of the world and gives it meaning.
G. Psychologically, a key reason we enjoy sad songs is that they profoundly move us.

Daniel, at age 17, is a student support captain at Armidale High School, a motivational speaker and a published author. He also has autism(自闭症), something he says doesn't define him but inspires him.
At just six months old Daniel had a stroke(中风) that left him physically impaired(受损的), unable to bear weight in his legs or move the left side of his body. Unable to walk and in a wheelchair until he was six years old, Daniel turned to books and could read fluently at age four.

Today, the world famous musical group the Beatles are releasing a new song called Now and Then. The “new” song was written around 45 years ago, and has taken a very long time to finish. It's special because it's the last song the Beatles will ever make.
The Beatles were a British rock band that was extremely popular in the 1960s and 70s. The four members of the band were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. The Beatles broke up as a group in 1970, but all of the band members continued to make music on their own. But now, only two of the band members, Mr McCartney and Mr Starr, are still alive.
In 1980, John Lennon was killed. But in the years before that, he recorded “demos”(rough versions) of several new songs. In 1994, Mr Lennon's wife, Yoko Ono, passed the tape along to Mr McCartney. The tape had demos of Mr Lennon playing and singing several songs, including Now and Then.
In 1995, the three living Beatles got together again and began to work on recording new versions of Mr Lennon's demos. They recorded some music for Now and Then, but unable to finish the song. The recording of Mr Lennon's singing had a loud electric humming sound that meant it couldn't be used on a finished record. But in June of this year, Mr McCartney announced the Beatles would soon be releasing one final song Now and Then. New computer methods had made it possible to separate out Mr Lennon's voice and clean up the recording to get rid of the hum.
Mr McCartney wrote more verses to complete the song. He also worked together with Mr Starr to add new bass, drums, and vocal parts to the song. Mr Harrison died in 2001, but the group was able to use some of the guitar parts he had recorded in 1995.
The result is the last Beatles song ever. “We all play on it,” said Mr McCartney. “It's a genuine Beatles recording.”
( ) 5. What makes the song Now and Then unusual
A. It has a history of almost 45 years.
B. It is the last song of the Beatles.
C. It is made by the famous rock band the Beatles.
D. It is produced before the Beatles broke up.
( ) 6. What is the deciding factor on releasing Now and Then
A. Adding more verses to the new song.
B. Removing the loud electric humming sound.
C. The three living Beatles working together again.
D. Using the guitar parts recorded by late Mr Harrison.
( ) 7. How is the text mainly developed
A. By giving examples. B. By analyzing causes.
C. By following time order. D. By comparing differences.
( ) 8. What does Mr McCartney mean by saying “We all play on it”?
A. The Beatles performed the song genuinely.
B. The Beatles recorded the song in a studio together.
C. The Beatles finished the song in honor of Lennon.
D. The Beatles members added to the song over the years.

根据第三段中“Music, probably from the very beginning … of large groups of participants.”可知,音乐在群体活动中的作用是可以把人们凝聚在一起。
3. C 推理判断题。根据第四段中“These two factors seem to suggest that … our own subjective feeling at the time of listening.”及“This is why when you want … fantastic flexibility of music in our lives.”
“there are three factors” 是句子的主干部分;“that I think are the main contributors” 是定语从句,修饰先行词 three factors。从句中,that做主语,I think是插入语,are the main contributors 是系动词+表语。
译文:然而,尽管有如此多的种类,但我认为有三个因素是主要的促成因素。
2. 分析:本句为主从复合句。主体部分为“The kinds of music helped to create very specific mental patterns”,是主谓宾结构,宾语是不定式to create very specific mental patterns。整个句子中间插入两个从句,一个是“that we were exposed to”,为定语从句,修饰主语The kinds of music;另一个是“when we were small”,为时间状语从句。
译文:我们在小时候接触到的音乐类型有助于形成非常特定的思维模式。
3. 分析:本句为并列复合句。整个句子由but连接构成并列句,前一半为主谓宾结构,宾语是to suggest that musical preferences are formed unconsciously,其中that引导宾语从句;后一半为主系表结构。

However为过渡词,主体部分“Samuel's ability to remember things doesn't stop with music”是主谓结构;主语Samuel's ability to remember things中to remember things为不定式做后置定语,修饰ability。
译文:然而,Samuel的记忆能力并不局限于音乐方面。
