Unit 3 The art of painting
Period 1 Welcome to the unit & Reading(1)
Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。
Paul Gauguin was born in 1848. He lived for just 54 years but he packed his brief life with activity.
The French painter spent his early childhood in Peru before returning to France. As an adult, he continued to travel a lot. Most famously, he spent much of the last decade of his life in Tahiti, an island in southern Pacific Ocean. Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colourful paintings of Tahitians and their culture.
The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists since the middle of the 19th century.① They're never satisfied for long with a certain style or way of life. Once something becomes conventional, it's turned down.
The artistic culture that Gauguin developed from was that of Impressionism. Painters like Claude Monet had wanted to paint how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen.② Gauguin, and similar artists like his friend Vincent van Gogh, moved even further away from “respectable” art than the Impressionists. For them, it was not simply a matter of seeing the world differently, but feeling and thinking about it differently, too.③
Gauguin saw, felt and thought differently from most members of European society. He thought that European culture was too fancy and not spontaneous. This is why he turned to the traditions of other parts of the world, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti.④ Artists like Gauguin used the word “primitive” for these cultures, but not as a negative term. For him, Europe, in becoming modern, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world.
In truth, Gauguin's paintings may be unconventional but they are certainly not “primitive”. They are the works of a painter with great awareness of what he was doing. It was this awareness that made him such an important painter for those that came after in the 20th century.⑤ When we look closely at the works of Gauguin, we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better.

Artemisia Gentileschi(15931653)
As the daughter of a painter, Artemisia Gentileschi was afforded access to the art world at a young age. Early on, she was in her father's workshop mixing paints and he supported her career when he noticed that she was gifted. As a famous painter of the Italian Baroque period, Artemisia Gentileschi did not let her gender hold her back from her subject matter. She painted biblical and mythological(神话的) paintings, just like male painters.

B[2024无锡江阴月考]
Enthusiastic travelers may have already heard of “regenerative tourism” along with the idea of sustainability(持续性). Whenever we travel—no matter where or how—we are leaving an impact on the environment and the world surrounding us. While sustainable tourism takes positive steps toward limiting that footprint in order for us to protect environments for future generations, regenerative tourism takes this idea one step further.
Regenerative tourism means “the idea that tourists should leave a place in better condition than it was before”. For example, when visiting a garden, each person plants a tree to further build the environment instead of leaving no trace(痕迹).
In a way, regenerative tourism involves travelers to be active in their acts of sustainability. Another great example of this is any act of clean?up. This is especially popular on major beaches and in parks where there's always rubbish to pick up and waste to remove. While travelers certainly don't need to join in a community clean?up while on vacation(unless they want to), the idea of being involved is very much the same.
Joining in regenerative tourism has personal and environmental benefits. Jeffrey Skibins, an associate professor in entertainment and park management, says, “Many tourists report feelings of deep personal satisfaction and a stronger connection to nature. Additionally, conservation behaviors enable tourists to develop life?long learning around these issues and continue these behaviors at home.”
Regenerative means “to renew and revive”, which is exactly what many travelers are doing to help environments recover. Depending on where one plans to travel, there might be more ways to help than originally realized. By further encouraging damaged environments to be renewed through travel rather than being negatively impacted, we can slowly help to rebuild the world's most beautiful landscapes.
( ) 4. What is the aim of regenerative tourism?
A. To further improve the environment.
B. To limit the footprint of human beings.
C. To keep a place in its original condition.
D. To dramatically promote global economy.
( ) 5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. Designing a bright future for our life.
B. Taking part in a community clean?up.
C. Renewing our ideas about environments.
D. Getting active in the acts of sustainability.
( ) 6. What does Jeffrey Skibins think of regenerative tourism?
A. It makes travelers closely connected.
B. It gives personal satisfaction to travelers.
C. It leaves a short?term effect on tourists.
D. It helps tourists improve their learning ability.
( ) 7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Regenerative Tourism Invites Travelers to Do Their Part
B. Traveling Patterns Make a Difference to the Environment

Milan's most famous mural(壁画), Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper, is hidden away on a wall of the dining hall adjoining the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie. It's a masterful psychological study and one of the world's most iconic images.
Centuries of damage has left the mural in a fragile state despite 22 years of restoration, which was completed in 1999. Da Vinci himself is partly to blame: his experimental mix of oil and tempera(蛋彩画法) was applied between 1495 and 1498, rather than within a week as is typical of fresco(湿壁画) techniques. But the most damage was caused by restorers in the 19th century, whose use of alcohol and cotton wool removed an entire layer. Yet the work's condition does little to lessen its astonishing beauty.

B[2024盐城一中期末]
A report from the UN warns that countries' current commitments would reduce carbon by only about 7.5% by 2030, far less than the 45% cut, which scientists say is needed to limit global temperature rises to 1.5 ℃, the aim of the COP26 summit.
António Guterres, the UN secretary general, described the findings as a “thundering wake?up call” to world leaders, while experts called for action against fossil fuel companies.
Although more than 100 countries have promised to reach net zero emissions around mid?century, this would not be enough to avoid climate disasters, according to the UN emissions report, which examines the shortfall(差额) between countries' intentions and actions needed on the climate. Many of the net zero commitments were found to be unclear, and unless accompanied by strict cuts in emissions this decade would allow global heating of a potentially disastrous extent.
Guterres said, “The heat is on, and as the contents of the report show, the leadership we need is off. Far off. Countries are wasting a massive opportunity to invest finance and recovery resources after the pandemic in sustainable, cost?saving, planet?saving ways. As world leaders prepare for COP26, that is another thundering wake?up call. How many do we need?”
Inger Andersen, the director of the UN Environment Programme(UNEP) said, “Climate change is no longer a future problem. It is a now problem. To stand a chance of limiting global warming to 1.5℃, we have 8 years to almost halve greenhouse gas emissions: 8 years to make the plans, put in place the policies, carry them out and deliver the cuts. The clock is ticking loudly.”
Emissions fell by about 5.4% during the pandemic, the report found, but only about one?fifth of the economic recovery spending goes towards reducing carbon emissions. This failure to “build back better”, despite promises by governments around the world, cast doubt on the world's willingness to make the economic shift necessary to settle the climate crisis, the UN said.
In the run?up to COP26, countries were supposed to submit(递交) national plans to cut emissions—called nationally determined contributions(NDCs)—for the next decade, a requirement under the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. But the UNEP report found only half of countries had submitted new NDCs, and some governments had presented weak plans.
( ) 4. Why were the findings described as a “thundering wake?up call” in Paragraph 2?
A. Because the world has failed to live up to its current commitments.
B. Because the opportunities presented by the pandemic have been wasted.
C. Because the world is falling behind in slowing down temperature rises.
D. Because the serious problems were brought about by global fossil fuels.
( ) 5. The potential harm of global warming can be reduced if ________.
A. current commitments of many countries remain unchanged
B. huge gaps are bridged between previous and present proposals
C. global sustainable environmental resources develop significantly
D. strict measures are taken to reduce emissions in the coming ten years
( ) 6. What is the writer's purpose of quoting “How many do we need?” in Paragraph 4?
A. To show the number of alarm clocks required.
B. To explain the reason for the world's wasting chances.
C. To ask for the number of the countries attending the meeting.
D. To stress the need to make the most of resources and reduce emissions.
( ) 7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Few countries have submitted plans to reduce the emissions.
B. Many countries' plans to cut emissions are far from satisfactory.
C. Most of the countries work under the Paris Climate Agreement.
D. Much progress in reducing emissions has been made these years.

A[2024沈阳十五中月考]
Every year in May, art galleries and museums prepare shows to honour Leonardo da Vinci, who died in France on May 2, 1519. He is remembered as one of the greatest artists and the most creative thinkers of all time. His most famous paintings are Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Recently, researchers have been studying a painting—Landscape 8P, which they think is Leonardo's earliest?known artwork. They used special lighting to study the artwork and discovered there were two images(图像), not one. One drawing is on the back of the piece, which dates back to August 5, 1473.
The drawing on the front was painted when Leonardo was 21 years old. It shows a river valley and a castle outside the city of Florence. There is little left of the drawing on the back, perhaps because it was wiped off. Only a bridge over a river can be seen. But there is writing on both sides.
The writing on the front gives the date and goes from right to left. Some people would call this “mirror writing”. It's a way Leonardo often wrote in his notebooks. The writing on the back goes from left to right and tells an agreement, probably to produce a work of art.
Cecilia Frosinini is an art historian. She said, “By looking at his writing, including that from this drawing, we can see his right?handed handwriting is educated and well done.”
Experts compared the two handwriting samples(样本) and said they were both made by Leonardo. They show he could write well using his left hand or his right hand.
The drawing is known as Landscape 8P from its number in an art list. It is part of an exhibit at Italy's Uffizi Gallery. The gallery?director, Eike Schmidt, said by studying the drawing researchers gave us a new way of looking at Leonardo's drawing technique and his abilities in writing.

( ) 3. What can we learn about Leonardo from the researchers' study?
A. He could write with either of his hands.
B. He did badly in right?handed handwriting.
C. He wasn't good at writing with his left hand.
D. He taught himself to write with his right hand.
( ) 4. What's Eike Schmidt's attitude towards the research?
A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
B[2024河北期末]
Abstract art, a genre often misunderstood and deeply involved in argument, challenges the traditional norms of visual representation. It resists simple explanation, making viewers connect with the artwork in a more thoughtful and emotional way. This style of art, eschewing(避开) literal depiction, instead uses shapes, colors, forms, and gestural marks to achieve its effect.
The genesis of abstract art can be traced back to the early 20th century, a period marked by rapid technological advancements and significant societal changes. Artists began to move away from realistic portrayal, seeking new ways to express the complexities of the modern world. Pioneers like Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian broke away from traditional techniques, favoring a more subjective approach that emphasized inner feelings over external realities.
Kandinsky, often hailed as the father of abstract painting, believed that art should be free from the constraints of representational accuracy. He advocated for the use of color and form as tools to evoke emotion, asserting that they possessed an intrinsic spiritual value. Mondrian, on the other hand, focused on reducing art to its basic elements—a style he termed Neoplasticism(新造型主义). His compositions, characterized by horizontal and vertical lines intersecting at right angles, sought to achieve a sense of harmony and balance.
In the ensuing years, abstract art evolved into various movements and styles, each offering a unique perspective on the non?representational aesthetic. Movements like Abstract Expressionism, led by artists such as Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, emphasized the creative process and the physical act of painting. Pollock's drip paintings, made by spreading and dripping paints onto the canvas, showed the movement's lively and energetic nature.
Despite its evolution, abstract art has often been met with skepticism. Critics argue that its lack of clear, recognizable forms makes it inaccessible to the general public. However, proponents of abstract art contend that its value lies in its ability to transcend language and cultural barriers, offering a universal form of expression that connects with the viewer on a subconscious level.
The impact of abstract art extends beyond the confines of the art world. It has influenced various fields, including architecture, design, and fashion, underscoring its significance as a revolutionary force in the realm of creative expression.
( ) 5. What distinguishes abstract art from traditional art forms?
A. Its focus on realistic portrayal.
B. Its emphasis on historical themes.
C. Its reliance on technological tools.
D. Its use of non?representational elements.
( ) 6. How did Wassily Kandinsky view the role of color and form in art?
A. As means to achieve representational accuracy.
B. As tools to evoke emotional and spiritual responses.
C. As elements secondary to the subject matter.
D. As techniques to enhance visual complexity.
( ) 7. What was the primary goal of Piet Mondrian's Neoplasticism style?
A. To depict modern technological advancements.
B. To capture the dynamism of urban life.
C. To reduce art to its basic elements for harmony and balance.
D. To experiment with new painting materials.
( ) 8. Why has abstract art been met with skepticism?
A. Because of its inaccessibility and lack of recognizable forms.
B. Due to its complex themes.
C. Owing to its focus on naturalness and dynamism.
D. Due to its limited influence on other creative fields.

The appearance of a rare artistic treasure in Beijing over the weekend resulted in crowds waiting in line for six hours at the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City.①
The crowds were eager to see the Qingming Scroll, the best?known scroll painting in Chinese art history, at the Hall of Martial Valor. The work is sometimes referred to as China's Mona Lisa.
The scroll painting by Zhang Zeduan(10851145), measuring 24.8 centimetres wide and 528.7 centimetres long, depicts a lively and rich landscape in Bianjing—today's Kaifeng in Henan Province.②
Faced with its huge popularity, the Palace Museum said it would organize another exhibition of the work in 2020, the 600th anniversary of the Forbidden City.③
“With growing public demand for exhibitions of national treasures, waiting in line for hours has become routine,” the museum said in a statement. “For example, in 2002, when the scroll painting was displayed in Shanghai, viewers also waited six hours in line.”
The work is seldom displayed because of its fragility.
Wang Qi said she drove hundreds of kilometres from Hohhot in Inner Mongolia to visit the exhibition, and it took her most of the day to finally see the scroll painting. “It was too exhausting, but I still think it was worthwhile,” Wang said.
The scroll painting forms part of a special exhibition titled “The Precious Collection of the Stone Moat”, which includes 283 ancient paintings and handwriting masterpieces once recorded in the Qing Dynasty emperors' catalog.
The display is a main event marking the 90th anniversary of the museum's opening to the public.④
Shan Jixiang, the Palace Museum director, had earlier anticipated huge crowds. “However, we still need to let more people know about the exhibition because it took 10 years for them to have this opportunity,⑤” Shan said.
The museum suggested that visitors book tickets online in advance. The scroll painting is on display until Oct. 12.

Art has always been an integral part of human society, serving a multitude of purposes and reflecting the cultural, social, and emotional spectrum of human experiences. It is not merely a form of aesthetic pleasure but a powerful tool for expression, communication, and even social change.
Firstly, art acts as a mirror of society, capturing the essence of the times in which it is created. It reflects the values, beliefs, and norms of a particular era, providing future generations with a visual and emotional record of the past. Opening the pages of Liuba Draws Beijing takes you on a fascinating visual journey through the heart of China's busy capital city. Within its lively watercolors, traditional hutong, the grand Summer Palace, and the contemporary charm of Beijing's Sanlitun and 798 Art District all come alive through the artistic lens of Liuba Vladimirova, more famously known as Liuba Draws.
Vladimirova's journey from the icy Siberian city of Irkutsk to the vital Beijing started during her college years, when she commenced_with an academic exchange program connecting her Russian university with Liaoning University in Shenyang, in Northeast China's Liaoning Province. It was during this transformative period that she first set foot in Beijing. Since then, her affection for the city has been undeniable.
Vladimirova's path as an artist was far from linear(直线的). Since childhood Vladimirova has developed a love for drawing and painting. However, she pursued a different academic and professional route, studying Chinese and international trade in college and later working in trade relations between Russia and China, none of which was directly connected to the world of art. Yet, Vladimirova's inner artist remained alive.
In 2015, Vladimirova began crafting a series of illustrations centered around Beijing, properly named “The Beijing Calendar”. What attracts Vladimirova most is Beijing's historic hutong. These narrow alleyways, rich in history and culture, serve as a wellspring(源泉) of inspiration for her artistry.
Vladimirova's ability to catch these hidden small differences likely comes from her unique perspective as an “outsider”—someone who didn't grow up in Beijing. This fresh perspective allowed her to arrive in the city with fresh eyes and an eager heart, ready to embrace a new culture.
( ) 5. What do the underlined words “commenced with” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. Improved. B. Began. C. Resisted. D. Assessed.
( ) 6. What do we know about Vladimirova from Paragraph 3?
A. She gave up her dream.
B. She won many art prizes several years ago.
C. She was hardworking over her childhood.
D. She delayed her artistic career.
( ) 7. Why does the author mention hutong?
A. To praise Beijing's architecture.
B. To show the inspiration of Vladimirova's art making.
C. To state the main contents of an art book.
D. To advise tourists to visit Beijing.
( ) 8. Which statement best summarizes Vladimirova's success?
A. Curiosity works wonders. B. Hard work pays off in time.
C. The world is diverse and lively. D. Painting has no national boundaries.

Ⅰ. 【语篇导读】本文是一篇记叙文。文章介绍了著名法国后印象派画家保罗·高更的生平及其作品的影响。
一、 1—4 CCAD
1. C 推理判断题。根据第二段中“Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colourful paintings of Tahitians and their culture.”
根据第五段中“For him, Europe, in becoming modern, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world.”可知,在高更看来,欧洲逐渐变得现代化、工业化和科学化,这些都是人类文明的发展,与人类文明相对应的是自然世界,自然而然发生。由此推知,画线词意为“自然的”。
4. D 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“It was this awareness that … we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better.”
主体部分“The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists”为主系表结构,使用了现在完成时,最后的since the middle of the 19th century为时间状语。
译文:这位伟大画家的不安分在 19 世纪中叶以来的现代艺术家中一直是很常见的。
2. 分析:本句为主从复合句。整个句子为主谓宾结构,主语是Painters,其后的like Claude Monet是介词短语做后置定语;had wanted是谓语,后面的to paint是不定式做宾语,“how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen”是两个how引导的宾语从句,做paint的宾语,由not连接。
译文:像克劳德·莫奈这样的画家想要画出他们眼中的世界,而不是按照他们的老师所教导的应该看到的世界去画。
3. 分析:本句为简单句。句子主干为“it was not simply a matter … but …”,是主系表结构。
译文:对他们来说,这不仅仅是以不同的方式看待世界,也是以不同的方式感受和思考世界。
4. 分析:本句为主从复合句。整个句子是主系表结构,表语由why引导,构成表语从句, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti是介词短语做后置定语,修饰前面的other parts of the world。
译文:这就是他转向世界其他地方的传统的原因,比如非洲,以及最终的塔希提岛。
5. 分析:本句为主从复合句。“It was this awareness that made him such an important painter”为强调句型;“that came after in the 20th century”为定语从句,修饰先行词 those。
译文:正是这种意识使他对之后20世纪的画家有着重要的影响。

Dear_Jack,
I'm more than excited to receive a birthday gift from you. Honestly speaking, I didn't expect that I could get a ticket for the painting exhibition that I had been looking forward to attending. I'm deeply grateful for your surprise.
With that precious ticket, I went to the exhibition, which featured amazing paintings from world?famous artists. While admiring those paintings, I felt myself wandering in a world full of greatness and fantasy. In a word, I really enjoyed the exhibition.
To express my gratitude, I've sent you a Chinese dictionary by mail, hoping you will like it.
Yours,
