He was the only gray cub(狼崽)of the mother wolf. The other cubs had red in their hair. He was gray like his father. He was the strongest cub. He showed more anger than his brothers and sisters. He made more noises.
He was a meat-eating animal. He came out of a family of meat-killers and meat-eaters. His father and mother lived only on meat. In his first few weeks of life, he lived on mother’s milk, which was actually from meat. And now, at a month old, when his eyes had been open for only a week, he was beginning himself to eat meat.
There came a time when there was no meat. For many days the cubs did not eat. They were too weak and tired to play. One-Eye, the cub’s father, was killed in the fight for food. Even the mother wolf left the cave to find meat, but there was nothing. One by one, the cubs died. Only the mother wolf and the gray cub were left.
One day the gray cub ran out of the cave to hunt for his own food. He met a weasel of his size. The rat-like animal ran at him and bit his throat. He was nearly dead when the mother wolf arrived just in time to kill and eat it.
The gray cub was not good at hunting yet, and still needed food from his mother. One day, the mother wolf brought him a baby lynx(猞猁). While eating, he heard great noise. The kitten’s mother had followed the mother wolf here. The mother wolf and the mother lynx started to fight, and they would fight to the death. He ran forward and bit one of her legs. This was enough to give the mother wolf the chance she needed. The lynx was dead, but the mother wolf was badly hurt. For a week, she did not move. The gray cub had to find food for both of them.
Without his mother to take care of him, he learnt what life was about. Without meat, there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to survive. The law of meat was: EAT OR BE EATEN.

①White Fang soon learned about men. He learned to get out of their way and to come when they called. Some days White Fang went near the forest. He stood there and listened to something calling him from far away.
②He learned about the other dogs, too. He learned that some dogs ate a lot and some were dangerous. But the biggest problem in White Fang’s life was Lip-lip, a larger and stronger dog, and he hated White Fang and took him as an enemy. White Fang learned to avoid him and the other dogs. He didn’t play but he learned everything about the camp instead. One day, for the first time, with the help of his mother Kiche, White Fang managed to hurt Lip-lip and he felt happy about that.
③Sometimes White Fang led Kiche to the forest and wanted her to follow him into the Wild. But the call of the fire and the men was too strong, and Kiche turned and walked back to the camp. White Fang was sad but he was still only a puppy (幼崽). The call of his mother was stronger than the call of the Wild.

White Fang then followed Gray Beaver quietly to his tent. He learned about the man-animal relationship and that the master had the right to punish (惩罚) him.

It was winter. Snow and ice covered the land. The land was silent and empty. It was the wild. But in these dark, cold winter forests in Northland, there was life.
The she-wolf was at the front of the pack (狼群). She was large and her colour was reddish. Next to her were two males. One was a large gray wolf. On her right side was another older wolf, called One Eye. His left eye was blind. They both wanted her as a mate (配偶).
They ran all that day and night, and the next day. The world was frozen and dead. Only the wolves were alive and they were looking for other living things to eat and continue to live.
Finally, they found a big moose. They were so hungry that the whole pack attacked him. He fought hard, kicking and hitting the wolves. But there were too many wolves and they killed him and ate him quickly. There was meat for each wolf. Soon the pack started to run in all directions. One Eye and the she-wolf became friendly and they ran side by side, hunting and eating together.
Soon the she-wolf felt she needed to find a small cave. She found a dry and warm one near a stream. She looked around carefully, and decided that this was the right place. She lay down. One Eye lay down outside the cave. It was April. Spring was coming. Water was starting to run in the stream, birds were singing and One Eye left the cave to explore.
Later inside the cave he heard small noises and saw five wolf cubs (幼兽) lying beside the she-wolf. She snarled (怒吼) at him, and he moved back. He knew now he must hunt for food. When he came back, he gave some meat to his mate. Then the she-wolf turned and licked (舔) his neck. This time, she did not snarl or show her teeth. She understood he was being a good wolf-father and that he didn’t want to eat her five cubs.

The gray cub was not good at hunting yet, and still needed food from his mother. One day, the she-wolf brought him a lynx (猞猁) kitten. While eating, he heard great noise. The kitten’s mother had followed the she-wolf here. They started to fight, and would fight to the death. He ran forward and bit one of her legs. The bite was enough to give the she-wolf the chance she needed. The lynx was dead, but the she-wolf was badly hurt, she did not move.
Without his mother to take care of him, the gray cub had to find food alone for both of them. He learnt without meat there was no life. Animals had to eat other animals to survive. The law was: EAT OR BE EATEN.

One day, while his mother was out hunting, the gray cub (幼兽) found the way out of the cave. At first, it was too bright after the half-dark of the cave. But slowly he learned to focus on the trees, the other bank of the stream and the sky.
He was afraid. But the need to know and understand was greater than his fear, so he went out. He soon discovered that the floor of the world was not flat like the floor of the cave. And he fell, rolling down the slope (斜坡) outside the lair (兽穴). He lay at the bottom yelping in fear.
But he soon sat up, and started walking and looking around him. He met a squirrel, and a woodpecker, both of which moved away from him. So he learned that the world had things that stayed in one place, and other things that moved. And the more he walked, the better he walked.
He had beginner’s luck when he fell into a ptarmigan’s (雷鸟) nest. In the nest were seven chicks. He knew this was meat, like what his mother gave him. So he ate them all.
As he walked away from the nest, the mother ptarmigan attacked him. He fought back, biting her wing with his small teeth, while she pecked him. He was excited and happy. He pulled the bird out into the open. He was fighting for meat, fighting to kill. It was what wolves did.
Then he left the ptarmigan free and rested. As he watched her, something rushed down from above him, picked up the ptarmigan and flew back up into the sky. It was a hawk.
He was learning. Live things were meat, but if they were big enough, live things could also hurt. It was better to eat small live things.
Later something small jumped in front of him, so he put his paw on it. It was a young weasel (鼬鼠). It made strange noise, and soon the mother weasel appeared. She jumped at his neck and bit him with sharp teeth. She wasn’t big, but he didn’t know how dangerous weasels were.
Suddenly she jumped, and bit into his throat. He tried to fight, but the weasel held on. The cub was sure to die, but luckily his mother, the she-wolf, heard his frightened calls and came to save him.The she-wolf took the weasel in her mouth and threw it up into the air, catching it in her teeth and killing it. The cub and mother licked each other happily, then they ate the weasel and went back to the cave and slept.

The she-wolf walked deeper into the cave. It was larger inside than at the opening. It was warm and dry. The opening was small enough for her to stop anything dangerous from coming inside. She lay down and rested. She had found what she was looking for.
One-Eye entered the cave, but the she-wolf growled at him, and he quickly backed out again. He was hungry, and he went off to hunt. He was away from the cave for many hours. When he returned, he heard noises inside. He did not know what they were. He tried to enter the cave, but the she-wolf growled at him again. She now had five wolf cubs. She was afraid that One-Eye would eat them. She knew that male wolves sometimes ate their cubs.
One-Eye was not that kind of wolf. He knew he had to find food for his mate and her cubs. He set off to hunt again. Before long, he saw a small animal. It was big enough to eat, but as he moved toward it, it rolled itself into a ball. It was a porcupine (豪猪), an animal with sharp spines. When it is attacked, it shoots these spines at its attacker. He was afraid of the porcupine, so he moved on and looked for other small animals to eat.
He came to the river bank. A large water bird was standing there. One-Eye leapt at it and caught it. He was hungry and began to eat the bird. He remembered the she-wolf and her cubs in the cave. She needed food. He picked up the dead bird and began to carry it back to the cave.
He returned to where he had seen the porcupine. Another animal was watching the porcupine. It was a lynx. The lynx was waiting for the right moment to attack the porcupine. One-Eye decided to watch and see what would happen.
The porcupine thought it was safe and began to unroll. As soon as it unrolled, the lynx sprang forward and tried to bite it. The porcupine quickly rolled itself up again and shot sharp spines into the lynx. The lynx leapt into the air in great pain and then ran off.
One-Eye saw that the porcupine was badly hurt. He waited. One-Eye could see a good place to bite it, but he waited until he was sure the porcupine was dead. Then he picked it up and carried it back to where he had left the dead bird. He quickly ate the bird and carried the dead porcupine back to the cave.
The she-wolf let him come in with the food. She knew now that he was not the kind of mate who would eat the cubs. She knew he would take care of her and her family.
