Passage 1 China cuts and adds new majors to meet the country’s needs
高校学科专业调整,聚焦国家战略需求 词数 350建议阅读时间 7分钟
“My major is gone!” Some students may have noticed a change in majors at many Chinese universities. Recently, China has introduced a three-year action plan to improve the way university majors are developed.
The plan, covering the period from 2025 to 2027, aims to (旨在) better support the country’s high-quality development and strategic needs. It calls for the rapid creation of majors in new and future industries while adjusting (调整) majors that are considered poor quality or have low student demand.
This is not the first government effort to adjust university majors. A 2023 guideline (指导方针) set the goal of upgrading 20 percent of them by 2025 to match new technologies, industries and models.
By Aug 28, the goals of the guideline had been achieved. In the past two years, universities across China have added 3,715 new bachelor’s programs while canceling or suspending (暂停) 6,638 programs, according to Xinhua.
Importantly, a “green channel” has been set up to speed up the approval (批准) of majors related to the nation’s latest strategic targets (目标) without going through the normal application steps. In September 2024, for example, six universities, including Beihang University, were guided by the Ministry of Education outside the normal application period to establish a low-altitude technology and engineering major. This was done to meet the rapid development needs of the low-altitude economy (低空经济).
Interdisciplinary (跨学科的) work is another important feature of the changes. The Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications has teamed up with other universities, such as the Beijing Film Academy. Together, they have started five joint (联合的) bachelor’s degree programs, including “digital media technology + digital media art” and “AI + financial technology”.
As China’s industries have been rapidly developing, there is a growing need for the cultivation (培养) of talent. Despite having a large pool of skilled people, we are short of high-level and interdisciplinary professionals. By adjusting majors, we can better integrate (结合) education, technology and talent development, a government official told Xinhua.
Also, universities have different strengths, so when adjusting majors, they shouldn’t just follow the new trend (趋势) blindly. Instead, they should focus on what they do best and make changes that suit their own needs, noted The Paper.

Passage 2 Discover the science behind dogs’ abilities to sense our feelings
狗狗为何懂你?科学揭秘“人宠心灵感应” 词数 321 阅读时间 6分钟
Your dog turns its head when you cry, moves around when you’re stressed and shows up by your side in your worst moments. Why are they so sweet After thousands of years of living with us, dogs have learned to pick up on our voices, faces and even our brain chemistry.
Dogs’ brains have areas that react (回应) to voices, just like ours do. A study in Current Biology found that certain brain parts light up when dogs hear vocal sounds. They don’t just notice the sound itself, but also the feeling in your words. Scans (扫描) show that laughs or angry shouts make the auditory cortex (听觉皮层) and the amygdala (杏仁核) active. They are parts of the brain responsible for processing emotions (情绪).
Dogs are also good at reading faces. When they look at pictures of human faces, their brain activity rises. An MDPI study showed that seeing a familiar face starts a dog’s reward (奖赏) and emotional centers.
One of the strongest dog-human relationships is chemical (化学的). When dogs and people make eye contact, both release oxytocin (催产素) – the “love hormone”. In one study, owners who looked longer at their dogs had higher oxytocin levels afterward, and so did their pets. This chemical feedback loop (反馈回路) makes the bond between us stronger.
Interestingly, dogs can even smell emotions. In a 2018 study, dogs introduced to sweat from frightened people showed more stress than dogs that smelled “happy” sweat. Simply put, your anxiety has a smell your dog can pick up, while your calm feeling helps them relax.
So how did dogs get so good at reading our emotions The answer is in evolution (进化). A Russian fox experiment found that foxes raised for friendliness developed more gray matter in brain regions tied to emotion and reward.u For dogs, thousands of years alongside humans have fine-tuned these pathways to read our social and emotional signs.

Passage 3 A decade of development turns Italy into a tennis powerhouse
意大利如何打造出一台“网球机器”?词数 386 阅读时间 7分钟
Italy, long celebrated for its food, art and clothes, has added a new cultural passion: tennis.
While once considered an average tennis nation, Italy now has seven male players ranked in the world’s top 60, a level of talent matched only by the US. France and Russia have five top-60 players each, according to Reuters. What sets the Italians apart is their youth: Among the nine men in the top 100, six are aged between 20 and 23, promising a strong talent stream for years to come.
At the front is Jannik Sinner, a four-time Grand Slam champion. His on-court success and modest (谦逊的) personality have turned him into a national figure (人物). “We never had the front page of Gazzetta dello Sport (a widely read daily newspaper in Italy) showing tennis, and now tennis is in all papers, no matter what Sinner does,” long-time journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta told CNN.
Italy’s tennis rise, however, is more than just one player. The Italian tennis federation (FITP) has spent over a decade reshaping player development. Angelo Binaghi, FITP president since 2001, told Reuters that in the last 10-15 years, they’ve expanded training and increased financial, technical and mental support for young athletes.
Promising athletes under 16 no longer leave home for national centers. Instead, they develop at home with private coaches, supported by regional training places and guided by federation “super-coaches”, Michelangelo dell’Edera, Davis Cup team manager and head of the under-16 field, told Reuters. “It’s been extraordinary (非凡的), and quite unusual for Italian people who are individualistic (个人主义的) by nature.”
International experts like Craig O’Shannessy, formerly with Novak Djokovic, have also helped change the game. Since 2016, O’Shannessy has worked for the federation and assisted (协助) the rise of Matteo Berrettini, a famous player from Italy into the top 10. He uses data analysis (数据分析) to develop strategic training made specifically for the players. “I wanted to... get them to play where the coaches could see strengths and weaknesses clearly. Then coaches could offer better guidance instead of a cookie-cutter approach (千篇一律的方法),” he told CNN.
Italy’s commitment includes major events. Turin has hosted the ATP Finals since 2021, originally scheduled through 2025. However, due to its success, the event will remain in Italy until 2030, AP News reported.

Passage 4 词数 404 建议阅读时间 7分钟
I. Pre-reading
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell tells the story of a horse’s life in his own voice. He experiences kindness and hardship with different owners. As one of the earliest fictional animal autobiographies (自传), it teaches people to care for animals and to be kind, understanding and respectful. Its powerful message continues to influence animal welfare standards around the world.
II. reading
In the following excerpt, Black Beauty is still young and living in his first home with his mother. One day, he sees hunters on horseback trying to catch a hare (野兔) with dogs.
When I was two years old, something happened which I have never forgotten. It was early spring, and there was a light mist (薄雾) over the trees and fields. I and the other young horses were feeding at the lower end of the field when we heard the distant (远处的) cry of dogs.
The oldest among us lifted his head to listen. ‘‘There are the hounds (猎犬)!’’ he said, and immediately raced off. The rest of us followed him to the top of the field, where we could see several fields beyond.
My mother and another old horse were standing near. ‘‘They’ve found a hare,’’ said my mother, ‘‘and if they come this way, we shall see the hunt.’’
Soon the dogs were all racing down the field next to ours, making a loud ‘‘yo-yo-yo-yo!’’ sound at the top of their voices. After them came men on horses, some in green coats, and all galloping (骑马奔驰) as fast as they could. Suddenly, the dogs became silent and ran around with their noses to the ground.
‘’They’ve lost the smell of the hare,’’ said the old horse. ‘‘Perhaps it will escape.’’
But the dogs began their ‘‘yo-yo-yo-yo!’’ again and came at full speed towards our field. Just then a hare, wild with fear, ran towards the trees. The dogs jumped over the stream and ran across the field, followed by the huntsmen. Six or eight jumped their horses over the stream (小溪), close behind the dogs. Before the hare could get away, the dogs were upon her with wild cries.
We heard a terrible scream (尖叫), and that was the end of the hare. One of the men picked her up and held her by the leg. She was covered in blood, but all the huntsmen seemed pleased.
I was so greatly surprised that at first I did not see what was happening by the stream, but when I did look, I saw a sad sight. Two fine horses were down, one in the stream and the other on the grass. One rider, who seemed unhurt, was climbing out of the water, but the other lay quite still.
‘‘His neck is broken,’’ said my mother. ‘‘I can’t understand why men are so fond of this sport. They quite often hurt themselves and ruin (糟蹋) good horses, all for one hare that they could get more easily some other way. But we are only horses, and don’t know why men do these things.’’
They carried the dead rider to our master’s house, and I heard afterwards that it was George Gordon, the only son of a local landowner, and a fine young man.
