Every time I came home from work at midnight,I often saw a shadow(影子) walking in our neighborhood. Was it “a night walker”?Someone walked alone in the dark and this always made me afraid a lot.
I thought it was “a sleeping walker”.So I paid no attention to it.But one night, when I walked past it quietly and quickly as usual,I heard a low voice.
“Do you often have to work at night?”
I was a little afraid.I looked around, but no one was nearby.I ran home as quickly as possible.
Later on,I heard it was a neighbor,an old man who has been living alone at home. He’s not “a sleeping walker”.He enjoys having a walk at night. So I seldom see him in the neighborhood in the day.
It’s said that he was a soldier many years ago.He has two children—a son and a daughter. His son has a family in Shanghai. His daughter went abroad in Sydney. He has been living alone since his wife died several years ago.Without any children living with him,he feels lonely and helpless.

After a couple of days, the daughter of a man working for Sam found the bag.She told her father about it.Her father immediately decided to take it to its owner.
He gave the bag back to Sam and asked him to check it.Sam was excited to get the coins back, but he decided to play a trick. He shouted at his worker,“There were 75 gold coins in this bag but you gave me only 50!Where are the other coins? You must have stolen them!”
The worker was surprised to hear that and explained that he hadn’t done that. But Sam did not accept the worker’s story and took him to court.
The judge(法官) heard both sides. The daughter and the worker were certain that there was only 50.But Sam didn’t give in,“I had 75 gold coins in my bag,and they gave me only 50,so it is quite clear that they have stolen 25 coins!”
“Since Sam lost a bag of 75 gold coins and the bag found by the girl had only 50 coins,it is clear that the bag does not belong to Sam.If anyone finds a bag of 75 gold coins,I will announce that it belongs to Sam.As there is no one looking for these 50 coins,I order the man and his daughter to take them as a reward for what they have done!” the judge said.

The Great Sphinx of Giza(狮身人面像)
Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza was built around 2500 BC.But John Anthony West says that it’s much older.“Everything anybody has learned about ancient civilization(文明) would have to be completely revised,” he told a magazine,of course,if he’s right.
West,a writer and filmmaker first got interested in ancient story after studying the work of a French researcher. The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30,000 years ago, rather than 4,500 years ago,as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together.Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down(磨损) over the years by water, rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute.Water? How could that be?The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert, which has been dry for 12,000 years. However, before that time,it was very green. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx,West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong,it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.
West gave some advice for kids.If you are interested in a topic, read everything you can on it.Do your own research.Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you.Ask lots of questions and find your own answers.
( A )70.When did most scientists believe Egyptian civilization developed?
A.4,500 years ago. B.6,000 years ago.
C.12,000 years ago. D.30,000 years ago.

The Great Sphinx of Giza(狮身人面像)
Most scientists agree the Great Sphinx of Giza was built around 2500 BC.But John Anthony West says that it’s much older.“Everything anybody has learned about ancient civilization(文明) would have to be completely revised , ” he told a magazine ,of course ,if he’s right.
West ,a writer and filmmaker first got interested in ancient story after studying the work of a French researcher .The researcher said Egyptian civilization could have developed as early as 30 ,000 years ago ,rather than 4 ,500 years ago ,as most experts believe.
West joined a scientist to do research together.Their research suggested that the Sphinx had been worn down(磨损) over the years by water ,rather than by sand and wind.
Wait a minute.Water? How could that be?The Sphinx is in the Sahara Desert , which has been dry for 12 ,000 years. However ,before that time ,it was very green. If it’s true that water wore down the Sphinx ,West thinks that it must have been built centuries earlier.
Whether West is right or wrong ,it’s important to challenge accepted ideas. That’s how science progresses.
West gave some advice for kids.If you are interested in a topic ,read everything you can on it.Do your own research.Don’t always believe everything your teachers tell you.Ask lots of questions and find your own answers.

“Do you often have to work at night? ”
I was a little afraid.I looked around ,but no one was nearby.I ran home as quickly as possible.
Later on ,I heard it was a neighbor ,an old man who has been living alone at home. He’s not “a sleeping walker ”.He enjoys having a walk at night. So I seldom see him in the neighborhood in the day.
It’s said that he was a soldier many years ago.He has two children—a son and a daughter. His son has a family in Shanghai. His daughter went abroad in Sydney. He has been living alone since his wife died several years ago.Without any children living with him ,he feels lonely and helpless.
