The other two men thought about this for a while, then Carl spoke.
“Well,” he said, “if I have only three months to live, I’ll take all my money out of the bank and go to foreign countries for holidays with my best friend, Erik. Passage 4
Because for safety reasons, every time we get on a plane, we’re asked to either turn off our phones or change them to flight mode. But according to The Conversation website, having to turn our phones off on a plane is “a service issue, not a safety one”.
When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference(干扰) to the aircraft’s radios. Pilots can hear this interference in their headphones. It doesn’t affect safety, but it’s annoying. Though speaking on a phone during a flight isn’t dangerous, from the service point of view, it isn’t proper.
When we make or receive a call on the ground, we connect to a cell tower that deals with all calls within 80-kilometer. As we move from place to place we are “handed on” to different cell towers. As US scientist Sven Bilen explains, for this system to work, there shouldn’t be too many “handoffs(信号转移)”; people shouldn’t be traveling faster than car speeds and phone users should be close to the ground.
However, now things are beginning to change. If we still can’t speak during a flight, we can use other phone functions(功能). For example, some airlines have wifi to make passengers send and receive short messages in the air. In the future, it may be possible for air travelers to make and receive calls freely. If so, the mobile phone doesn’t need to be connected to the ground cell towers, and therefore there would be no danger of disruption(中断) to phone service.
One day, perhaps, we will be chatting in the air as much as we chat on the ground.
( )1. Speaking on the phone in a plane isn’t actually ______.
A. allowed B. dangerous C. proper D. safety
( )2. The underlined phrase “handed on” means ______ in Chinese.
( )3. It will affect the ______ if you speak on your phone in the air.
A. airline B. pilot C. flight D. passengers
( )4. Which of the following is Not True
A. You should turn off your mobile phone on the plane.
B. The mobile phone users should be close to the ground.
C. You can send and receive short messages on the plane.
D. The passengers can make and receive calls freely in the future.
( )5. This passage is about ______.
A. technology B. information C. education D. culture
Passage 5
Many animals around us are smart. Let’s get to know some of them.
Dolphins are smarter animals in the sea. Researchers(研究员) put sea animals to a test. In the test, the researchers made red marks on the animal’s bodies and took them in front of a mirror(镜子). Many sea animals either ran away or fought with the ones in the mirror. However, when the dolphins saw themselves in the mirror, they tried to clean the red marks off their bodies. So the researchers believed that the dolphins knew the ones in the mirror were just themselves.
Bees work hard, and they are smart enough to learn something. Researchers found a group of bees and taught them to tell which horizontal line(水平线) was higher than the other. If they could find the higher line, they would get sugar as a prize. After training for a period of time, the researchers tested the bees. To their surprise, the bees found the higher horizontal line quickly and got sugar. Instead, when bees see the vertical(垂直的) line, they fly away because they knew there was no way to get sugar.
Chimpanzees(黑猩猩) are very human-like. They can learn fast and well. Researchers showed the numbers from one to nine on the screen. Chimpanzees and some college students were asked to remember where the numbers were after watching the numbers in less than a second. The adult chimpanzees and the college students performed almost the same, but the young chimpanzees performed much better. It was amazing(令人惊叹的).
( )1. What can explain many sea animals are not as smart as dolphins
①run away ②know themselves ③hit themselves ④clean marks
A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②③ D. ②④
( )2. The second paragraph mainly tell us ______.
A. bees work very hard
B. bees are smart enough in learning
C. bees can tell higher horizontal line
D. bees can fly fast and easily get sugar
( )3. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Chimpanzees recognize all numbers.
B. Chimpanzees are similar to college students.
C. Young chimpanzees are smarter than those adults.
D. Chimpanzees are the smartest of the three animals.
( )4. Which of the following is TRUE
A. Dolphins can know themselves.
B. Bees often need to train and learn.
C. Chimpanzees are as smart as college students.
D. Bees are not as smart as the other two animals.
( )5. On which website can we read the passage

( )5. This passage is about ______.
A. technology B. information C. education D. culture
【答 案】1~5 CDBCA
故选A。

Many sea animals either ran away or fought with the ones in the mirror.
2. B 信息提示题 根据第3段首句的they are smart enough to learn something可知,蜜蜂学习一些东西足够聪明。
3. C 细节理解题 根据最后一段最后一句中的but the young chimpanzees performed much better可知,幼年黑猩猩表现更好,即更聪明。
So the researchers believed that the dolphins knew the ones in the mirror were just themselves. 所以Dolphins can know themselves. 故选A。
