Passage 1
Manners and customs are different all over the world, so you should pay special attention when you are abroad.
In Chinese friends can pat each other on the shoulder and touch any child they like. But in Mediterranean countries, if you don’t touch someone’s arm when talking to them or if you don’t greet them with kisses or a warm embrace(拥抱), you’ll be considered cold. But patting someone on the back who isn’t a family member or a good friend in Korea, and you’ll make them uncomfortable. In Thailand, the head is considered sacred(神圣的)—never even pat a child on the head.
Chinese people always think it’s very sick to blow your nose in public—especially at the table. The Japanese hate it even more. In public places in Japan, such as subway and shopping malls, it is a no-no to blow your nose. If you have to blow your nose, you can only go to the toilet. At the same time, the Japanese are disgusted(厌恶的) with using handkerchiefs.
It’s unpopular to talk while eating in China. Also in some African countries, the food’s the thing, so don’t start chatting about your day’s adventures(奇遇) while everyone else is enjoying the nice meal. You’ll probably be met with silence—not because your group is unfriendly, but because mealtimes are for eating, not talking.

In 1885, Mr. Edwin Binney and Mr. C. Harold Smith set up Binney & Smith Company in New York. The company’s early products were mainly red paint and black powder(粉末) for making tires(轮胎). In 1900, at the new factory in Easton, Black Mill, the company made the first pencil for the school. How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park Well that’s
what’s happening in my community. There’s a park that some people want to turn
into a golf course(高尔夫球场). Let me tell you why I think it’s a bad idea.
First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn’t fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.
Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment(设施) will have to be moved or knocked down, which is a waste of time and money. It’s also a waste of perfectly good equipment.
Third, what about giving young people something to do Not all kids are crazy about golf. At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won’t have anywhere to go and they won’t have anything to do. This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble. Wouldn’t it be better to give them something to do at the park
Finally, building a golf course and maintaining(维护) it costs a lot of money. What about those people who can’t afford to join a golf club That means that the golf course will only open to people with lots of money.

The coach then explained patiently(耐心解释), “That’s because you stop halfway. You know, beautiful sights are always on the top.”
After hearing his words, Bob made up his mind to finish his journey. When he got to the top in the end, he felt really excited.

Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea. I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further.

【答 案】1~5 DDACD
由此可知第一个everyone指的是社区里的所有人,即all the people in the community。故选D。
故选A。
It is the best way to solve problems by holding community meetings.

At the beginning of the second year of middle school, his school offered(提供) rock climbing lessons in order to encourage(鼓励) students to exercise. He was so happy that he joined at once.

The coach noticed that and asked him, “Why do you want to take rock climbing lessons ” “I come for fun, of course.” “Is that fun ” he asked. Bob shook his head slowly. The coach then explained patiently(耐心解释), “That’s because you stop halfway. You know, beautiful sights are always on the top.”
After hearing his words, Bob made up his mind to finish his journey. When he got to the top in the end, he felt really excited.
Sometimes it’s hard to reach the top of the mountain, but it’s a pity(遗憾) to stop halfway, so don’t give up.

1. B 信息提示题 根据短文第2段首句的his school offered rock climbing lessons in order to encourage students to exercise.
4. A 细节理解题 根据...there wasn’t one climbing club in his school at first, so he felt sad ... He was so happy that he joined at once. When Bob finished running, he almost lost his breath and got bored可知,跑完之后,他感到很无聊;根据 When he got to the top in the end, he felt really excited可知,到达顶端之后,他很兴奋。故选A。
