(2024·吉林省长春市朝阳区长春外国语学校高二上月考)The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful, or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness, or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person's needs.
Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communicating among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thai persons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.
Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example, Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However, Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.
Nurses and other caregivers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.

vary(v.
There are various opinions on the meaning of silence.(关于沉默的意义有各种观点。)
value(n.
Silence is a valuable tool in cross-cultural communication.(沉默是跨文化沟通中的宝贵工具。)
aware(adj.
view...as... = regard...as... = consider...as...(视为……)
例:She regards silence as a form of strength.(她将沉默视为一种力量。)
fill...with... = occupy...with...(用…… 填满)
例:He occupied the silence with a story.(他用一个故事打破了沉默。)
imply = suggest = hint(暗示)
例:His expression suggested that he agreed.(他的表情暗示他同意了。)
1.Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation.
前半句:被动语态(be viewed by),核心结构为 “silence + 谓语 + 宾语补足语(as uncomfortable)”。
后半句:therefore 连接因果关系,“attempts may be made to do sth” 为被动句式,意为 “人们可能会尝试做某事”。
2. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing.
时间状语从句:when a person...stops(包含并列谓语 is speaking 和 stops)。
主句主语:what maybe implied(what 引导的主语从句)。
表语从句:that the person wants...(从句中包含 “want sb to do sth” 结构和 before 引导的时间状语)。
3.Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patient's silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily.
is not interrupted(不被过早打断)
(is not) allowed to go on(不被允许不必要地持续)
(2024·广东江苏·高考真题)“I am not crazy,” says Dr. William Farber, shortly after performing acupuncture (针灸) on a rabbit. “I am ahead of my time.” If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods. But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh. He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians (兽医) now practicing “holistic” medicine-combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic (按摩疗法) and herbal medicine.
Farber, a graduate of Colorado State University, started out as a more conventional veterinarian. He became interested in alternative treatments 20 years ago when he suffered from terrible back pain. He tried muscle-relaxing drugs but found little relief. Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.
Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.
Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. “Sometimes it surprises me that it works so well,” he says. “I will do anything to help an animal. That’s my job.”
24.What do some of Farber’s coworkers think of him
A.He’s odd. B.He’s strict. C.He’s brave. D.He’s rude.
25.Why did Farber decide to try acupuncture on pets
A.He was trained in it at university. B.He was inspired by another veterinarian.
C.He benefited from it as a patient. D.He wanted to save money for pet owners.
26.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.Steps of a chiropractic treatment. B.The complexity of veterinarians’ work.
C.Examples of rare animal diseases. D.The effectiveness of holistic medicine.
27.Why does the author mention the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association
A.To prove Farber’s point. B.To emphasize its importance.
C.To praise veterinarians. D.To advocate animal protection.
【答案】24.A 25.C 26.D 27.A
根据第一段的“If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods.( 如果他看起来有点戒备的姿态,那可能是因为他的一些同事偶尔会嘲笑他不寻常的方法。) 故选A。
根据第二段的“Then he tried acupuncture, an ancient Chinese practice, and was amazed that he improved after two or three treatments. What worked on a veterinarian seemed likely to work on his patients. So, after studying the techniques for a couple of years, he began offering them to pets.(然后,他尝试了针灸,这是一种古老的中国疗法,并惊讶地发现,经过两三次治疗,他的病情有所好转。
根据第三段内容“Leigh Tindale’s dog Charlie had a serious heart condition. After Charlie had a heart attack, Tindale says, she was prepared to put him to sleep, but Farber’s treatments eased her dog’s suffering so much that she was able to keep him alive for an additional five months. And Priscilla Dewing reports that her horse, Nappy, “moves more easily and rides more comfortably” after a chiropractic adjustment.(利·廷代尔的狗查理患有严重的心脏病。
根据最后一段的内容“Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700. 故选A。
If he seems a little defensive, it might be because even some of his coworkers occasionally laugh at his unusual methods.”
If he seems a little defensive(表假设)。
主句:it might be because...(because 引导表语从句,解释原因)。
He’s one of a small but growing number of American veterinarians now practicing ‘holistic’ medicine—combining traditional Western treatments with acupuncture, chiropractic and herbal medicine.”
He’s one of...veterinarians(one of + 复数名词,表 “……
后置定语:practicing...medicine(现在分词短语修饰 veterinarians)。
3.原句:“Farber is certain that the holistic approach will grow more popular with time, and if the past is any indication, he may be right: Since 1982, membership in the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association has grown from 30 to over 700.”
宾语从句:that the holistic approach...(作 is certain 的宾语)。
条件句插入:if the past is any indication(插入语,表 “如果过去可作参考”)。
defensive adj. 防御性的;戒备的 a ~ attitude(防御态度)
laugh at 嘲笑;取笑 ~ sb.’s methods(嘲笑某人的方法)

membership n.
Farber “ahead of his time” 的判断。
关注转折词(如 but, however)、例证词(如 for example, such as)和数据(如会员数增长),这些通常是出题点。
例:第一段 “But Farber is certain he’ll have the last laugh” 引出其对疗法的信心,为后文论证做铺垫。
例:24 题原文 “laugh at his unusual methods” 中 “unusual” 对应选项 A “odd”(古怪的)。

Passage 1
(24-25高二下·重庆·期中)As a child, I was transported to the US. To fit in at school, I kept quiet as I furiously learned how to speak just like the American kids — to say “flashlight” and “trunk”, instead of button. Gradually, I sounded just like everyone else. Unfortunately, with the confusing logic of the under-10s, I decided that my parent would feel betrayed if I lost my English accent. Besides, we’d be moving home in a few years. If I sounded American, I’d be the odd one out all over again. So I landed on my genius plan: I’d be Yankee at school and English at home.
All went smoothly until a new friend agreed to come over to play, and I had to face both my English parent and American friend in one room. So I developed the coping techniques I would rely on for the next 5 years, which ranged from not speaking at all to muttering to my friends so that only they could hear; if forced to speak, I would use words that sounded the same in both accents. There hasn’t been much research into “bidialectalism”, perhaps because it’s something we all do: the way you speak defines you.
After moving back to the UK, my parents were pleasantly surprised that I would now speak to them with my friends present, but I was also questioning when and whether to speak, and wondering who was listening. Brené Brown once said that trying to fit in is the opposite of true belonging. She had a point. Later, some American friends were due to visit us. Somehow, I made my decision: enough was enough and I was tired of fitting in. So, cautiously, I used my British voice, and said “jumper” instead of “sweater”. No one noticed or mentioned it for the first few days. Until, eventually, during a card game, one friend suddenly looked up, and said “Hey, you sound British now! Go fish.” And that was that.
1.What do we know about author’s “genius plan”
A.It’s a fake commitment to fit in.
B.It’s a good way to improve author’s English
C.It’s an immature decision to appear thoughtful
D.It’s a great opportunity to show author’s language gift.
2.What does the underlined word “bidialectalism” refer to in the 2nd paragraph
A.The tendency to disguise your own accent.
B.The way that a particular person uses English.
C.The local tongue spoken in a small community.
D.The good knowledge of two forms of the same language.
3.Why did the author stop shifting between British and American English
A.Because the author lacked the sense of belonging.
B.Because the author decided to present him/herself as it is
C.Because the author disagreed with what Brené Brown said.
D.Because the author was fed up with parroting the people around.
4.Which can be the most suitable title of the passage
A.Accent is a double-edged sword!
B.When in Rome, do as Romans do!
C.Clear language depends on clear thinking!
D.Better to be hated for what you’re than loved for what you’re not!
根据第一段“Unfortunately, with the confusing logic of the under-10s, I decided that my parent would feel betrayed if I lost my English accent. Besides, we’d be moving home in a few years. If I sounded American, I’d be the odd one out all over again. So I landed on my genius plan: I’d be Yankee at school and English at home.
根据第一段“So I landed on my genius plan: I’d be Yankee at school and English at home. (于是,我实现了我的天才计划:我在学校是美国佬,在家是英国人)”以及第二段“There hasn’t been much research into “bidialectalism”, perhaps because it’s something we all do: the way you speak defines you.
根据第三段“Later, some American friends were due to visit us. Somehow, I made my decision: enough was enough and I was tired of fitting in. So, cautiously, I used my British voice, and said “jumper” instead of “sweater”.
根据全文内容,特别是最后一段“Brené Brown once said that trying to fit in is the opposite of true belonging. She had a point. Later, some American friends were due to visit us. Somehow, I made my decision: enough was enough and I was tired of fitting in.
Passage 2
The Benefits of Hobbies for High School Students
High school can be a stressful time with a heavy workload and pressure to succeed. However, engaging in hobbies can bring many advantages to high school students.
1. Relieve Stress
High-school life is full of tests, assignments, and college-entrance exam preparations. Hobbies provide a much-needed break from this academic stress. 1 Whether it’s painting, playing a musical instrument, or reading a novel, these activities allow students to relax and recharge.
2. Develop New Skills
Hobbies offer a chance to learn new things outside the classroom. For example, if a student takes up photography, they will learn about composition, lighting, and how to use a camera. 2 These skills can not only be useful in the future but also boost a student’s confidence.
3. Expand Social Circles
Joining hobby-related clubs or groups can help students meet like-minded people. 3 They can share their passion, exchange ideas, and build new friendships. For instance, students who love writing may join a writing club and interact with others who have the same interest.
4. Discover Talents
Through hobbies, students may uncover hidden talents they didn’t know they had. A student who tries dancing for the first time might find that they have a natural sense of rhythm and grace. 4 This self-discovery can open up new possibilities for their future.
5. Enhance Time-Management Skills
Balancing hobbies with schoolwork forces students to manage their time effectively. 5 By setting aside specific time for hobbies and study, students learn to prioritize tasks and become more organized.
A.This can lead to personal growth and development.
B.Hobbies can provide an escape from the daily grind.
C.It is important to choose a hobby that suits your interests.
D.These new skills can also be added to their resumes later.
E.They can also learn teamwork and communication skills.
F.They can meet people who share the same enthusiasm for that hobby.
G.Students have to plan their schedules carefully to make time for everything.
【答案】1.B 2.D 3.F 4.A 5.G

Passage 3
(24-25高二下·湖北武汉·期末)I was always shy. As a new student in the school, I spent most days staring at my desk, which made it surprising that I chatted to someone around me one day. 1 That would take all night!
After I got home, I took my time petting the cat, postponing the pain. When I finally sat down to write the five-page essay, I began with the reasons Ms. Black would want to hear.
First of all, talking in class would keep me and my neighbors from learning. I wrote wildly and one paragraph down. 2 What if talking were the first step towards life as a bad person I started picturing my future as a failed bank robber. Without the education I was throwing away, I’d turn to a criminal and go to prison! When I got out, people would point fingers at me and say, “She used to talk in class.” 3
But when mum got home from work, I was still roaring, “Five pages! That’s impossible!” “Well, you’d better get back to work,” she said, “and I want to read it when you’re through.”
Shortly after dinner, the essay packed with my complaints was handed to mum. 4 Instead, mum laughed so hard that she had to wipe her eyes, “Oh, this is going to be memorable. ”
The next day, as Ms. Black read my essay aloud, the class erupted into laughter. 5 The essay didn’t cure my shyness overnight, but I did learn I wasn’t shy in print. My face burned, but for the first time, it wasn’t from shame; it was pride.
A.I couldn’t help feeling awkward.
B.And then I chewed on my pencil.
C.Gradually the pages began flying by.
D.I expected a lecture on my behavior in class.
E.The fact was that I had the power to tell a funny story.
F.I was wondering if I could write an essay about “Overcoming shyness”.
G.Now I was paying the price by writing an essay on “Why I Should Not Talk in Class”.
【答案】1.G 2.B 3.C 4.D 5.E

Passage 5
(24-25高一下·广东佛山·期末)Teenagers are well-known for wanting to sleep in and stay up late. This isn’t just a matter of preference — it’s a biological necessity. However, early school start times affect their natural sleep patterns and prevent them getting enough sleep. 1 And there is no shortage of benefits that come with it.
When teenagers get enough rest, they are more attentive and prepared for learning. Rested students tend to earn higher grades in tests. 2 Sleep helps them memorize what was learned throughout the day. When teenagers have a good sleep schedule, they can reason clearly and solve problems more easily. This can result in overall academic performance improvement.
3 While asleep, the body carries out important functions like building muscle and strengthening the immune system. Teenagers with enough sleep because of later school start times are less likely to fall ill and can recover faster from any health issues they may face.
Sleep plays a key role in maintaining mental health, too. When the first period begins at later times, teenagers can get the rest they need to manage their emotions better. Well-rested teens are generally happier and more emotionally stable. 4 Enough sleep can reduce the likelihood of mood swings and help teens maintain a positive outlook on life.
Research has also found that later school start times bring many other benefits, such as better social relationships and more engagement in after-class activities. School schedules that meet the biological needs of teenagers can lead to healthier, happier, and more successful students. 5
A.The reason is simple.
B.Here are a few benefits.
C.They are a practical step toward better education.
D.Getting sleep is also important for teenagers’ physical health.
E.Therefore, it is time for school to offer mental health support.
F.That’s why many experts are calling for later school start times.
G.They are better equipped to deal with the pressures of school life.

Passage 6
Learning a new language is more than a skill. It gives you an opportunity to understand other cultures. 1 .
Choose a language
This is a personal decision. 2 If you enjoy studying Japanese history and culture, you may want to add Japanese to the list. Perhaps you’re planning to vacation in Brazil and decide to learn Portuguese before the trip. Maybe you live in an area with many Spanish speakers and believe being bilingual (双语的) will increase your job opportunities.
3
This is important because you need to know which words to use to express yourself and understand what you hear and see. According to the International Center for Language Studies, knowing between 4,000 and 10,000 words in a language typically makes you an advanced speaker.
Accept mistakes
Mistakes are a common part of the process when learning a language. You may choose the wrong word, change vowel sounds, or use the present tense form of a verb when talking about something that happened last week. When you make a mistake, pay attention to the advice you get. 4 .
Set aside time to practice
5 . According to the US Department of State’s Foreign Service Institute, a native English speaker typically needs between 600 and 750 class hours to learn languages like Dutch, French, Italian, and Spanish. You’ll spend around 900 class hours learning German, Haitian Creole, and Swahili. Sometimes you need to learn languages with fewer features in common with English. Then you’d better put in at least 1,100 class hours.
A.Build your vocabulary
B.Keep trying before setting a goal
C.Focus on the 100 most commonly used words
D.Try out these steps for how to learn a new language
E.Learning a new language takes time and needs regular practice

Passage 8
Recent climate change reports paint a frightful picture of the earth’s future, but a tiny school of just 400 students is determined to make a difference.
Huonville High School in Tasmania beat out 14 schools from around the world, winning the Global High Schools Zayed Future Energy Prize. The school used the $133,000 prize to do up an old building on their grounds, transforming it into a place, called the Layed Huon Energy Hub, where students can learn to apply clean, renewable energy sources to everyday life.
Inside the building, there are solar panels, energy efficient curtains, and something like that. Here, 13 student volunteers participate in hands-on studies about clean energy sources. They have even rigged up bicycles to produce enough energy to boil oil and make donuts- small ring-shaped friedcakes.
Their teacher Nel Smit said the Hub has become an important place for students to gather, all while drawing attention to the topic many people choose to ignore. “The energy hub is a meeting place for the students, but it’s also a place where we hold workshops and demonstration events for the whole community,” she explained. “It’s raised awareness of renewable energy, energy efficiency, and opportunities in the community for engaging them around that sort of technology.”
“Running from climate change as a young person doesn’t help,” said student Aisha Fisher, who volunteers at the Hub. “The best thing you can do is to look at it from an optimistic, realistic point of view, and see what you can do.”
“Being part of Zayed has definitely helped me feel like I’m doing something. I’m making a change, and that has reassured me not to be so worried about the world,” added Aisha.
So far, the students’ efforts at the Hub have saved their school more than $44,000 on their utility bills (水电费)!
1.What’s the school’s purpose in doing up the old building
A.To make the prize well known. B.To reward the best students.
C.To offer a practice platform. D.To attract more volunteers.
2.What do the words “the topic” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.Severe climate change. B.The Zayed Hub project.
C.the Layed energy prize. D.Awareness of clean energy.
3.What has the Layed Huon Energy Hub brought Aisha Fisher
A.Pressure. B.Confidence.
C.Confusion. D.Satisfaction.
4.What does the students’ story tell us
A.He who laughs last laughs longest. B.Where there is a will there is a way.
C.Curious minds never feel contented. D.Thinking and action result in success.
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.B 4.D
根据第二段中“The school used the $133,000 prize to do up an old building on their grounds, transforming it into a place, called the Layed Huon Energy Hub, where students can learn to apply clean, renewable energy sources to everyday life.(该校用13.3万美元的奖金翻新了校园里的一座旧建筑,将其改造成一个名为“Layed Huon能源中心”的地方,学生们可以在这里学习如何将清洁、可再生的能源应用于日常生活)”可知,学校翻新旧建筑的目的是为学生提供一个实践平台,让他们学习如何将清洁能源应用于日常生活。故选C。
根据第一段“Recent climate change reports paint a frightful picture of the earth’s future, but a tiny school of just 400 students is determined to make a difference.(最近的气候变化报告描绘了一幅地球未来的可怕景象,但一所只有400名学生的小学校决心做出改变)”以及第四段中“Their teacher Nel Smit said the Hub has become an important place for students to gather, all while drawing attention to the topic many people choose to ignore.(他们的老师Nel Smit说,这个中心已经成为学生们聚集的重要场所,同时也引起了人们对许多人选择忽视的话题的关注)”可推知,人们普遍忽视的话题指的是气候变化,因为学校通过翻新旧建筑并建立能源中心来应对气候变化,同时引起人们对这个话题的关注。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“‘Being part of Zayed has definitely helped me feel like I’m doing something. I’m making a change, and that has reassured me not to be so worried about the world,’ added Aisha.(艾莎补充道:‘成为Zayed的一员确实让我觉得自己在做一些事情。
