In the late 1940s, it was common to see young students practising table tennis on a chalk-drawn table on the sidewalk at night. As a second-grader in a primary school, I began my table tennis journey on such a table. Later, I became a player and then a coach of a national team, watching generations of players contribute to the success of table tennis.
Recently, at the age of 84, I received a national honorary title. I said, “Choosing to play table tennis is a decision I totally do not regret.”
During times when we didn't have much, I even made my own bat(球拍). I would buy old photo frames made of plywood(胶合板) from stores, and then turn them into bases of bats. I would then attach rubber(橡胶) to make a simple bat. I recalled, “The ‘clang’ sound of hitting the ball with such a bat was very satisfying.”
I formed a team called Red Flag at school. During holidays, we played friendly matches with ping-pong fans from nearby factories and schools. I often visited different places, where I could watch high-level players and learn from them.
In a competition held in 1961, I won third place in the men's table tennis singles event. I also won the first-ever men's doubles and mixed doubles championships for our team. In 1975, I became the head coach of the women's table tennis team in my country. Under my guidance, the team always won the women's singles title in competitions.
One of the outstanding athletes I discovered and trained became an extremely good table tennis player. Though she was short, she could see every ball coming her way as an opportunity. This allowed her to launch(发起) more attacks than others. Moreover, she had a strong desire to win and trained very hard.

Exercise doesn't just help you lose fat. It could also promote healthier fat, according to a new study. “Living a physically active lifestyle makes our fat tissue(组织) a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight,” said senior study author Dr Jeffrey Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan.
To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with obesity: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. Those who had a history of regular exercise had fat cells which showed characteristics that increase how much fat they can store. It is important that the fat tissue under the skin has a greater capacity(容量) so that if a person does gain weight, the increasing fat can go there instead of more dangerous places, such as the heart or liver, Dr Jeffrey added. “Unfortunately, most of us, even regular exercisers, gain weight as we get older. If we have a greater capacity to store that in our fat tissue, less of it will go to our liver, our heart, or other places that in excess(过量) can be really problematic.”
This study shows that researchers need to learn more about fat tissue and how it is connected to health and lifestyle changes, said Dr Andrew Freeman, director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health in Denver. “Just being overweight may not be the whole story,” he said. “The tissue used to be understood as only functioning to store energy, but researchers are just starting to learn it has many functions,” Freeman said. “It makes sense to have some degree of fat so you have some reserves, but not to the point that the typical American has,” he added.
The key finding of the study is that healthier fat storage is just another good reason to live a physically active life. If you want to start, Freeman suggests trying out exercise first thing in the morning.

Most people connect running with speed. It is often regarded as an exercise that leaves runners breathless and tired when they finish. On the other hand, when someone runs slowly, they might feel like they are not putting in enough effort. __1__ Slow jogging, a leisurely form of running, can be a beneficial addition to your running routine.
__2__ For a competitive marathon runner, a slow speed will be very different from that of someone who only goes on quick daily jogs around their neighborhood. Slow jogging can actually be defined as the speed at which you can easily carry on a conversation with someone while running for a long time. If you measure your speed for a five-kilometer race, slow jogging will usually be around two minutes slower per kilometer. __3__
There are some tips for you to start your slow jogging. __4__ This includes taking shorter, quicker steps—about 180 per minute—and landing on the mid-foot rather than the heel. Meanwhile, individuals should stand tall while jogging with their back straight and shoulders relaxed.
Running is an activity that can be hard on muscles and bones, especially if you keep a consistent speed for a long period. Slowing your speed helps prevent injuries by spreading stress to different areas of your body and reducing the effect on joints. Moreover, slow jogging is a good exercise to strengthen the heart and lungs. __5__ Perhaps most importantly, jogging at a slower speed allows you to enjoy running more. If you are interested in getting any of these benefits, it's certainly worth giving slow running a try.
A. The idea of “slow” can differ greatly between persons.
B. However, different running styles have different benefits.
C. It also helps in burning fat more efficiently in your body.
D. For most people, this speed is just slightly faster than walking.
E. Recovery from slow jogging can last from several days to weeks.

It was a fine day. My friend Henry and I set off on a short trip with a local as our guide. He said it would be a rather easy two-hour hike to see the Paiute trout(派尤特鳟鱼) in its natural living place. We believed what he had said and started out following him. But we later found it was a different story.
When we three arrived at the place, Henry and I were worn out. However, we were not too tired to enjoy the excitement when we saw the colorful fish swimming freely there. I stood by the water, and Henry took some photos of me with green plants and beautiful flowers. Time passed quickly. Before we knew it, it was getting late. The local guide told us that we could only appreciate the scenery(景色) for a brief while and then we had to go back to our car before dark. We had thought the rest of the hike should be relaxing. But it wasn't as it was the steepest(最陡峭的) way that we'd faced so far.
When we advanced, my huge backpack felt like a ton of stone. Both of my legs were really painful and tears ran out of my eyes. And there was another mountain ahead of us. As the sun began to set, my legs gave out completely.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Seeing that, Henry asked me to take one tiny step at a time.
He patiently explained that each small step would bring me closer to the end. “Don't think about the whole journey. Just focus on this single step,” he encouraged. With his words in mind, I gathered my strength and forced my trembling legs to move. Step by step, I made my way forward, ignoring the pain in my body. The local guide also stayed by my side, offering me words of comfort. Henry took my backpack, which made me feel a bit lighter. I was so exhausted that I could hardly breathe, but I didn't give up.
Finally, we climbed over the mountain.
As we reached the top, a sense of achievement washed over me. I looked back at the path we had come through, feeling proud of myself for not giving up. The view from the top was breathtaking. The setting sun painted the sky in warm colors, making it a scene worth the struggle. We walked down the mountain more easily in the gentle light. When we got back to the car, I was tired but filled with joy. This experience taught me that with determination and the support of friends, we can overcome any difficulty.

In a recent game of pickleball, my teammate and I were falling far behind other teams. It was her turn to serve. We were both standing behind the baseline, paddles(球拍) up in ready position, when she nodded at me and said, “In it to win it.”
“Really?” I looked at her, surprised by her use of a catchy expression that was new to me. My inner self was never ready to accept even the tiniest suggestion that we should be trying to win the game.
In my life off the pickleball court, I enjoy yoga, folk dancing—anything but games with winners and losers, and I always prefer to be an observer rather than a participant in the world of sports.
Then pickleball came along. Suddenly, I didn't want to be an observer any longer. I wanted to be a player myself. Like many people, I was first drawn to the game simply as a safe activity. Playing outdoors with people in my neighborhood allowed me to step out of my usual social comfort zone.
But my addiction to the game comes from the sport's low barrier of entry. The equipment isn't particularly expensive. It's a relatively easy game to learn, and a participant doesn't need to be especially strong, tall or fast. Little wonder that everyone can now be seen throwing a green, orange or yellow plastic ball with holes in it across a net.
Pickleball is the first game I've ever wanted to win. I think it's because of the excitement I feel when I hit an unreturnable ball down the middle of the court and score a point. Participating in a sport myself rather than cheering for others provides real proof that I can still work hard to achieve goals.
So, I've made a long-term commitment to it. I am embracing the game as my pickleball buddies embrace me. I'd forgotten how much fun it is to socialize while doing something active. In that playful space of the court, I am facing directly my fears of winning and losing. In the meantime, doing something outside of my comfort zone feels magical. Now I wonder what contests I might be brave enough to enter next.

With two minutes left on the clock, Hongtusi Han Dukai and her partner Gulhayat Mamit, from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, decided to stop swinging, and their final score was recorded at 61 bell touches. “I've never experienced this kind of result before,” Hongtusi said. “It's super easy for us to reach 140 or even 150 during our training; really regrettable!”
The swing, known as “dangqiuqian” in Chinese, is popular in China, and boasts a long history. Becoming an official competition event in the National Ethnic Games(全国民族运动会) in 1986, the female-only swing competitions are divided by weight categories into below 55 kg and above, and further divided into height competitions and the bell-touching competitions, with both singles and doubles events.
For the doubles bell-touching competition, two athletes stand face-to-face on a 40-cm-long and 10-cm-wide footboard of the swing, swinging to touch a bar with bells that usually stands 7.2 meters high and 8.5 meters away, hanging under another swing frame. Athletes who touch the bells the most times during the 10-minute competition win.
As the first pair to compete in the women's doubles 55-kg bell-touching competition of the swing event, Gulhayat admitted she was “very nervous” before stepping on the swing, but then calmed down as Hongtusi reminded her, “Don't be nervous. Keep up with my rhythm, and just listen to me.”
Both of them changed from middle-distance running to the swing, and they fell in love with swinging quickly. In 2022, both Hongtusi and Gulhayat participated in Xinjiang's ethnic minorities' sports games and then paired up for the Games this year. Despite only starting to train together three months ago, the new pair quickly developed a good cooperation, improving their performance.
“I think swinging is the hardest of all the events. There's no break during the 10-minute competition. There's no space to relax. You have to train for a long time to adapt to the ropes; insistence, strength and physical fitness are all required,” explained Hongtusi. At last they got the third place.

Everyone has their own way to “recharge” their sense of well-being—something that makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and spiritually even if they aren't consciously aware of it. Personally, I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups.① A hike through the woods is ideal when I can make it happen. But that's me. It's not simply that I enjoy these activities but also that they make me feel better and clear my mind.
Mental health and physical health are closely connected. No kidding—what's good for the body is often good for the mind. Knowing that what you can do physically has this effect for you will change your day and your life.②
Physical activity has many mental health benefits. These have been published in the journal Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and include improved brain health and cognitive function—the ability to think, if you will, a reduced risk of tension and worry, improved sleep and overall quality of life. Although not a cure for all, increasing physical activity directly contributes to improved mental health and better overall health and well-being.
Learning how to manage stress and getting screened for depression are simply good prevention practices in daily life. Awareness is especially important at this time of year, when disruptions to healthy habits and choices can be more likely and more annoying.③
Shorter days and colder temperatures have a way of breaking up the normal life—as do the holidays, with both their joys and stresses. When the rich sunshine and clear skies of temperate(温和的) months give way to terrible weather, less daylight, and festive gatherings, it may happen unconsciously or seem natural to be less physically active. However, that tendency is just why it's so important that we are ever more mindful of our physical and emotional health and how we can maintain both at this time of year.④
( )1. What is the author's regular way of “recharging” his well-being
A. Working out in a gym. B. Staying and doing nothing.
C. Hiking in the woods. D. Slight exercise.
根据第一段中“Everyone has their own way to ‘recharge’ their sense of well-being … getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups.”
D
( )2. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. The importance of good sleep.
B. The ways to improve brain health.
C. The mental health benefits of physical activity.
D. The bond between mental health and physical health.
C
( )3. What does the underlined word “disruptions” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Achievements. B. Disturbances.
C. Advantages. D. Improvements.
B
( )4. Why does the author mention shorter days, colder temperatures and festivals
A. To persuade us to enjoy our current lives.
B. To show useful advice on keeping healthy.
C. To describe unexpected things in our lives.
D. To remind us to care about well-being anytime.
that引导宾语从句,从句中as quickly as是一个比较结构,or连接并列成分a walk around the block和getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups。
Knowing that what you can do physically has this effect for you是动名词短语做主语,其中that引导宾语从句,在这个宾语从句中what you can do physically 是主语从句。
when引导定语从句修饰先行词this time of year,在定语从句中disruptions是主语,to healthy habits and choices是介词短语做后置定语修饰disruptions。
why it's so important …和how we can maintain both为并列表语从句。

Researchers have extensively explored whether time of day affects exercise benefits and performance. Although morning workouts may be the greatest for circadian rhythms(昼夜节律), afternoon exercise tends to be slightly more efficient. Overall, given the benefits of exercise, the best time to work out for most people is whenever they can fit it into their schedules.
A key part of starting to exercise is choosing when to work out. Morning, afternoon, or evening: Which time is best Scientists have studied this dilemma extensively.
For fresh exercisers, morning workouts are often the most terrible. Trading a cozy bed for an unforgiving fitness center can be a rude awakening, to say the least. But morning workouts have their advantages. Challenging the body produces endorphins(内啡肽), uplifting one's mood following effort. These chemicals, along with a few others, boost energy levels, alertness, and focus, which can make you more productive and attentive at work.
But early exercisers may not be able to achieve peak performance. Stiffer muscles, fewer stored energy reserves from overnight fasting(夜间禁食), and a slightly cooler body temperature in the morning add up to influencing exercise output. Therefore, more anxious exercisers might prefer working out in the afternoon.
Exercise itself may also be more efficient in the afternoon. For example, in one study, young men instructed to cycle to exhaustion at a set difficulty were able to ride 20% longer in the afternoon compared to the morning. A review of studies also found that muscle strength, muscle power, and running abilities all peaked in the afternoon, topping morning performance by anywhere from 3% to 20%.
Finally, some folks may decide to work out later in the evening. Studies centered around this time of day tend to focus on whether or not nightly exercise negatively impacts sleep quality. Gathered research suggests it does not and, instead, actually improves sleep.
So, taking everything into account, when is the best time to exercise There actually is a straightforward answer! If you're not about to go to sleep, if you've got some free time in hand, and if you haven't already exercised today, the best time to exercise is now.
( )4. When is the best time for people to exercise according to the research
A. In the morning. B. In the afternoon.
C. In the evening. D. Whenever they are available.
根据第一段中“the best time to work out for most people is whenever they can fit it into their schedules”以及最后一段中“the best time to exercise is now”可知,对于大多数人来说,当他们可以将锻炼这一件事情安排到自己的时间表上的时候,就是最佳时间,即有空锻炼的时候就是最佳时间。
D
( )5. Which of the following is NOT the advantage of morning exercise
A. Improving one's mood following effort.
B. Producing more chemicals in the body.
C. Increasing energy levels, alertness and focus.
D. Making you more efficient and concentrated at work.
根据第三段中“But morning workouts have their advantages … make you more productive and attentive at work.”
B
( )6. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Exercise efficiency increases in the morning.
B. Nightly exercise seriously influences sleep quality.
C. More anxious exercisers prefer exercising in the afternoon.
D. Afternoon exercise might have an advantage over morning exercise.
根据第五段中“Exercise itself may also be more efficient in the afternoon.”以及“A review of studies also found that … topping morning performance by anywhere from 3% to 20%.”
