Unit 4
Exploring literature
Ⅰ. 话题拓展阅读。
Literature is an important part of a total language arts programme at all grade levels because of the many benefits it offers.①
Literature provides pleasure for listeners and readers. It is a relaxing escape from daily problems, and it fills leisure moments. Making time for recreational reading and using high-quality literature help to develop enthusiastic readers and improve achievements.② Developing a love of literature as a recreational activity is possibly the most important outcome of a literature programme.
Literature builds experience. Through reading, children expand their horizons through vicarious(间接感受到的) experiences. They visit new places, gain new experiences, and meet new people. They learn about the past as well as the present and learn about a variety of cultures, including their own. They discover the common goals and similar emotions found in people of all times and places. Nory Ryan's Song by Patricia Reilly Giff, a hard survival story, is set in Ireland during the potato hunger of 1845, and Patricia Polacco's The Butterfly, deals with Nazis, resistance, and Jewish persecution(迫害) during World War Ⅱ.
Literature provides a language model for those who hear and read it. Good literature exposes children to correct sentence patterns, standard story structures, and varied word usage. Children for whom English is a second language can improve their English with the interesting context, and all children benefit from new vocabulary that is woven into the stories.③
Literature develops thinking skills. Discussions of literature bring out reasoning related to sequence, cause and effect, character motivation, predictions, visualization of actions, characters and settings, critical analysis of the story, and creative responses.
Literature helps children deal with their problems. By finding out about the problems of others through books, children receive insights into dealing with their own problems, a process called bibliotherapy.④ Children might identify with Gilly, living angrily in a foster home in Katherine Paterson's The Great Gilly Hopkins, or with Mary Alice, a city girl forced to live with her grandma in a “hick town” in Richard Peck's A Year Down Yonder.

A[2025扬州期末]
Long ago, a hermit(隐士) journeyed through a lifeless desert when he discovered a cave. Tired from the journey, he entered to rest. Inside, he was amazed to see a bright light coming from a huge pile of gold coins at the cave's center. Shocked and frightened, he escaped from the cave and ran down the road as fast as he could.
Not far away, three robbers(强盗) hiding behind a rock found the hermit running hurriedly. The chief robber stopped him and asked curiously why he was running. Breathless, the hermit replied, “I am running away from evil.” The robbers, seeing nothing behind him, laughed and insisted he show them this so-called bad thing. Though he hesitated, the hermit agreed and led them to the cave. Pointing to the gold coins, he said, “There it is. The evil is before your eyes.”
The robbers thought the hermit was mad and laughed off his warning. Delighted by their discovery, they sent the hermit on his way. Then, they began discussing how to deal with the gold. Too weak to carry it and afraid someone else might find it, they decided one of them should go and bring food from town. The third robber volunteered, secretly planning to poison the food and take the treasure for himself.
While he was away, the two remaining robbers planned to kill him upon his return and take his share of the gold. When the third robber returned with food, the others attacked and killed him. Afterward, they ate the poisoned food and died as well.
The hermit's warning came true. The gold stayed hidden, shining quietly in the cave. Outside, the winds blew over the lifeless desert. The treasure was left behind, silent and untouched, as if waiting. Perhaps it was never meant to belong to anyone—only to show the cost of certain actions.

A[2025烟台期末]
I was absorbed in a unique experience the moment I opened The Secret Garden. At that time, I had to get ready for the eighth grade, and I felt the pressure of school. It worried me from time to time, so I tried to make myself feel better through reading. This novel was my path to happiness.
It starts out in a sad atmosphere, and I quickly warmed to Mary, the heroine(女主人公). Despite the fact that she is selfish and disagreeable, I still got the impression that her loneliness is what leads to all of her unpopular personalities. She has to deal with the death of her parents. I wouldn't be able to accept this reality if I were her. It surprised me that Mary later discovers a way to pick herself up. Thanks to a robin(知更鸟), she discovers a garden. In the garden, Mary finds every day filled with things to do, including looking after the sad prince Colin, meeting the passionate gardener Ben and playing with the animal-lover Dickon. That's the life Mary wants! The roses, leaves, all plants make the garden alive. The only word I could think of while reading was “Magic”!
The moment I finished reading this book, I realized that it was not just written for children. So I started to think about the meaning of life. Are the garden and society the same thing My answer may be “Yes”.
The book tells us there doesn't have to be a real garden for ourselves, but just an inner space. Reading, communicating or just taking a walk can help us deal with hard times. It also tells us to face failure and pain correctly. We can't lose ourselves in sadness for such a long time and need to keep moving forward. Just as Tagore once said, “If you shed tears when you miss the sun, you also miss the stars.”

In San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, Amanda Barrows placed a wooden nightstand(床头柜). It went with a sign reading, “Take a poem; leave a poem.”
So far, more than 100 poems have come in. “It's completely unexpected,” said Barrows. “I'm impressed by the support.”
A park manager by day and a poet by night, Barrows joined the Poetry for the People class at City College of San Francisco. Students were asked to “bring poetry into the community” as their final project.
In the beginning, Barrows struggled to land on an idea. At last, though, it struck her that she could bring together her two worlds—parks and poetry. A neighbor offered a weathered nightstand, which Barrows thought would be perfect for her project. She could fill the nightstand with fresh paper and pens and add a box at the bottom for poems.
The idea reminded her of Little Free Libraries, known for the bookstands placed across the city. “I was inspired by the Little Free Libraries, where you ‘take a book; leave a book’. And I thought, ‘Maybe I could do this with poetry’,” said Barrows. Since she only had one nightstand to work with, Barrows decided that she would leave it in a park for four days before moving it to a new location. Barrows's goal is to bring the poetry nightstand to all 220 city parks in San Francisco.
Since the Poetry Nightstand Project(PNP) started, people have donated many poems. Barrows has shared them on social media. “It is a community project,” Barrows said. “It belongs to all.”
Her poetry class teacher, Muller, commented, “People need poetry”, which might be the reason for the success of Barrows's project.

In the early 20th century, in a small town nestled along the edge of the Pacific Ocean, a young girl named Ursula grew up surrounded by the quiet company of books and the wild beauty of nature. Her father was an anthropologist(人类学家), a weaver of stories about ancient cultures, and her mother was a writer. In such a household, Ursula learned that words had the power to shape worlds and that imagination was boundless.
As a child, she read plenty of myths, legends, and fairy tales. But unlike most, Ursula didn't just read stories—she dreamed of creating her own. She would sit for hours, crafting worlds filled with strange creatures, powerful magic, and deep questions about life. Little did she know her imagination would one day reshape how the world thought about science fiction and fantasy.
Years later, Ursula published her first major novel, A Wizard of Earthsea. It wasn't just a fantasy tale; it was a story about balance, identity, and the power of names. The hero, Ged, was not a typical knight or warrior but a flawed boy who had to face his own shadow. Her world of Earthsea was a group of islands filled with magic and wisdom.
But Ursula wasn't done yet. Her curiosity drove her to explore themes far beyond wizards and dragons. In The Left Hand of Darkness, she imagined a world without fixed sexes, forcing readers to question their ideas about identity and society. In The Dispossessed, she tackled capitalism(资本主义) and anarchism(无政府主义) through the lens of two opposite planets. Her stories were as much about the human spirit as they were about alien worlds.
Though she never sought fame, Ursula K. Le Guin became one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. She proved that science fiction and fantasy weren't just escapism—they were tools to ask the biggest, most profound questions of humanity, and imagination was not just a refuge—it was a revolution. Even now, her books continue to inspire dreamers, thinkers, and storytellers to imagine worlds that challenge and change our own.

One day, the school headmaster announced the arrival of a new literature teacher, Mrs Adams. “Class, tomorrow welcome her and behave well, as she previously worked in the army and is tough and strict,” she shared. Upon hearing she had worked in the army, the whole class looked at each other in fear, except Ben.
The next day, Mrs Adams entered the classroom looking friendly and speaking softly. “She looks like she couldn't even hurt a fly,” Ben said.
Not angry with Ben, Mrs Adams taught her lesson patiently so that everyone could understand what she was talking about. And she asked the class to prepare for their first test that would be given weeks later, which caused everyone to take notes and listen carefully, except Ben.
He wasn't interested in the lesson. He thought literature was boring, and he refused to listen. Thus, when it was finally time for the test, Ben struggled to get any of the answers right.
During their next literature period, Mrs Adams returned all the papers. Almost all received As while Ben received an F. “Do better next time, Ben,” Mrs Adams called out. But Ben couldn't accept it.
After Ben went home in time for dinner, his dad Patrick asked him about his test. Ben said that the new teacher was unfair, giving him his failing mark on purpose. Patrick doubted it. The next day, he secretly visited his son's headmaster, and confirmed Ben was lying. Patrick left the school dissatisfied.
That evening, Ben discovered his dad had learned the truth about his test. “You didn't put any effort into doing well in that test!” Ben was embarrassed(尴尬的). His face turned red and hot. He was angry. He wanted to take revenge(报复) on his new teacher.
The next day, he followed Mrs Adams to her house after school. Angry with her for giving him a failing mark and embarrassing him before his father, Ben took a brick from the ground and threw it at her window. Hearing the noise of her window breaking, Mrs Adams was shocked.

2. 请按如下格式作答。
Frightened, Ben ran away towards home, trying to escape.
However, Mrs Adams saw him and informed his father. Patrick waited for Ben outside their front door. Ben instantly knew Patrick had heard about what had happened. When Patrick angrily stared at him, Ben said sorry. Then Patrick gave him a hard lecture, and Ben was more regretful and deeply realized how terrible his actions were. And he was aware he should study hard and respect his teacher and that it was wrong to hurt others because of one's own irresponsibility and laziness. In tears, Ben decided to correct himself.
Then, following his dad, Ben left towards Mrs Adams' house to apologize.
He was afraid of how his teacher would treat him. Surprisingly Mrs Adams wasn't too angry. “Since you're truly regretful and have learned, I forgive you,” she said. Embarrassed, Ben helped clean up the broken glass and used his pocket money to hire someone to fix the window. After that, he behaved well, studied hard and passed his next literature exam.
