1. “The opportunity of a lifetime” is used here to emphasize that the chance for Alex to experience an Indian wedding is very rare and he guessed that it must be an amazing experience. It also implies that perhaps he would not have a second chance to have this same experience again.
2. Because the excitement about the Carnival was in the air. “No wonder” is used to show that the happy occasion is a big part of the local people's lives, so it is natural for people from Rio to take a week off for this occasion.
