I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t: understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that: hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.
Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed(解散). As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up;she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible (负责任) for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized(强调) the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating(欺骗) themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously(认真地) about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.
Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very strange to her that I hadn’t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued(继续) to believe that I had cheated on the test.

A. in the teacher’s office
B. in an exam room
C. in the school
D. in the language lab

A. she had not brought a pen with her
B. she had lost her own on her way to school
C. there was something wrong with her own
D. her own had been taken away by someone
43. The teacher saw all this, so she asked the boy ________.
A. to go on writing his paper
B. to stop whispering
C. to leave the room immediately
D. to stay behind after the exam
44. The thing(s) emphasized in her talk was (were) ________.
A. honesty B. sense of duty
C. seriousness D. all of the above
45. The boy knew everything ________.
A. the moment he was asked to stay behind
B. when the teacher started talking about honesty
C. only some time later
D. when he was walking out of the room

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Maybe your friends from middle school are going to a different high school. Even if you know other freshmen (新生), you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen (高年级的学生). How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces
Most high schools hold a freshman orientation before school actually starts. It is helpful not only because you learn your way around the building and get to meet some of your teachers, but you can also get to meet fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect. Talking about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something freshmen are probably anxious about. The work in high school builds on what you learned in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more after-school activities than middle school did, such as clubs, music and theater groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
Middle school taught you the basics of academic knowledge, time management, and social skills while providing you with a little extra support and guidance. High school gives you the chance to learn how to be more independent and responsible.
46. According to the passage, when they come to the school on the first day freshmen usually feel ________.
A. proud B. nervous C. excited D. afraid
47. What are freshmen probably worried about
A. The learning task. B. The training in the freshman orientation.
C. The ability to make friends. D. The relationship with teachers.
48. What can be a proper approach when freshmen have difficulties in dealing with some work
A. Attend the Orientation Day. B. Turn to your teachers.
C. Concern your classmates. D. Take part in after-school activities.
49. After-school activities mainly help students ________.
A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships
C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability
50. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. what you’ll learn in high school
B. what you learned in middle school
C. the difference between middle school and high school
D. the importance of being more independent and responsible
第Ⅱ卷 非选择题(共30分)

Are you aged between 14 and 19 years old Do you care about your local environment Would you like to help make the area you live in better, cleaner, safer and friendlier If your answers are ‘yes’, ‘yes’ and ‘yes’, then read on! A local organization is carrying out a project, giving money to groups of teenagers who want to become active citizens. Here are a few easy things you could do to get started.
Meeting the neighbors. Everybody needs good neighbors. Knock on people’s doors and find out what they would like to improve in your area. Set a date for a meeting and then make some plans together. If you don’t want to go round to their houses, then you could always put a note through their doors.
Neighborhood watch. It is very popular in the UK. If you go away on holiday and leave your house, it’s very nice to know that a neighbor is keeping an eye on it. It’s a good way to make the area you live in safer.
Lending a hand. There are often elderly people living in the neighborhood who may not be able to do the things that you can. Offer to do their shopping once a week, look after their gardens for them or maybe walk their dogs!
No littering. Nobody likes picking up other people’s rubbish, but a clean street can make all the difference. Go out once or twice a week and see what you can find. You never know, one day you might find something valuable!
Just tell us what you want to do. Then we’ll send you more information.

A. Attend the Orientation Day. B. Turn to your teachers.
C. Concern your classmates. D. Take part in after-school activities.
49. After-school activities mainly help students ________.
A. build up healthy bodies B. develop friendships
C. develop their interests D. improve their learning ability
50. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.
A. what you’ll learn in high school
