The New Age of Invention
Interviewer: Good evening, and welcome to Between the Pages. This evening, I'll be talking to Dr Richard Fairhurst, whose1 new book The New Age of Invention has just been published. Welcome, Richard! Richard: Thank you. It's a pleasure to be here2. Interviewer: I guess you have been asked about the title of your book before. It suggests that3 the present day is a new age for inventions, but4 many people might think that5 the great age of invention is over. Richard: Well, that's an interesting point. There have been6 golden ages of invention throughout history. Think of the four great inventions in Ancient China: gunpowder, papermaking, printing and the compass. These things changed the world forever. Then there were the great Western inventions: the steam engine, the telephone and the radio. And now, we find ourselves in the great new age of technology.
Interviewer: So are most of the new great inventions tech based Richard: A lot, yes. For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as7 the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments8. In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power. 7连接并列成分virtual__reality,wearable__tech和the__flexible__battery 8宾语从句,省略了连接词that
Interviewer: Can you give us some examples Richard: Sure. New inventions like 3D printers have been used to make replacement hearts and bone parts. In terms of the environment, it is now possible to create an intelligent walking house9. It is capable of using GPS technology to travel to different places, with computing technology controlling its “legs”10. What's more, huge advances in solar technology mean it can be eco friendly11, too. 9it是形式主语,真正的主语是to__create__an__intelligent__walking__house 10with的复合结构 11宾语从句,省略了连接词that
Interviewer: Impressive stuff! I've also been told that12 you're an inventor yourself. Is that correct Richard: Yes, I am, but I'm only one member of a big team—most inventors now work as part of big international teams.
Interviewer: I see. So what is it that inspires us to invent things13 Richard: Most inventions start with recognising a problem that14 needs a solution. This was no doubt the reason behind the invention of the wheel in ancient times, which15 much later developed into the car. Now, reduced energy supplies and environmental pollution have led to more advances in the technology of new energy vehicles. But what16 remains important is that17 we have an incredible desire to think and create, and18 that's the real spirit of invention.
Interviewer: One last question. This is the one everyone really wants to know19: will anybody ever invent a time machine Richard: I think you've been watching too many movies20! Nothing like this has been invented yet and I'd say we're a long way from an invention like that at the moment! But, as they say, “Never say never!” 19定语从句,修饰the__one,省略了引导词that/which 20宾语从句,省略了连接词that,从句使用了现在完成进行时

In April, Uday Bhatia, a student from Delhi, India, visited Bichpuri as a volunteer for a 2 day programme. During his stay, he found that the biggest problem the local children faced was frequent power cuts, which made it difficult for them to study. That left a deep impact on Uday.
Uday came back to Delhi and took immediate action to address the problem. He soon understood that residents of villages like Bichpuri couldn't afford electrical devices. He wanted to find and develop a solution to rural India's power shortage. After 24 attempts, the 18 year old built the solution—Uday Electric—a bulb that can offer a power backup of almost 10 hours in case of a power cut.
Explaining how the bulb works, Uday states that the technology used is very simple. “When the bulb is connected to a power source, energy gets stored in the battery. When the power supply is cut off, the bulb uses the energy stored in the battery to give out light,” he explains.
At first, he built a bulb with a four hour backup. But he wanted to provide a backup of 8-10 hours. Thanks to his love of computer science, he developed a way to change the bulb's brightness, increasing the backup time without increasing the size of the battery. The bulb now comes with settings to change the brightness.
Uday sold each bulb at only Rs 250 (3 dollars) and has so far sold over 7,000 units in many remote villages. But what Uday did went beyond business. He donated 950 units to houses in the poorest areas through a non governmental organisation, bringing joy to those living without electricity. “When I saw the joy on people's faces when their houses were lit up, I felt on top of the world. No feeling could come close to it,” says Uday.
Uday won the Diana Award, which honours “outstanding young people selflessly creating positive social change”. He wishes to bring bulb to as many houses as he can in the coming years.

The History of the Automobile
The automobile, more commonly known as the car, certainly counts as one of the greatest inventions in human history. __1__
As to who invented the automobile, the answer is not quite so clear cut. While some give credit to Karl Benz, who patented the first gas powered vehicle in 1886, others give the praise to Gottlieb Daimler. Incidentally, the two inventors' companies merged (合并) in 1926 to form the famous Mercedes Benz.
__2__ It was Henry Ford who designed a system of mass production that allowed him to produce cars far more cheaply, which in turn meant he could sell them at lower prices. By 1927, 15 million of Ford's famous all black Model Ts had been produced. Mass car ownership had become a reality.
__3__ Inventors were working on electric vehicles around the same time that gas powered ones were being developed. The first electric car was designed in 1884 by Thomas Parker, the same man who electrified the London Underground. By 1900, electric vehicles were giving gas cars a run for their money. They were quiet, did not give off emissions, and were easier to drive, especially for women. __4__ They were difficult to charge when most people's homes didn't have electricity. They were also rather expensive. In the end, Henry Ford's cheap Model T put an end to interest in electric cars which didn't become popular until the gas shortages and environmental concerns of the late 20th century.
Now, early in the 21st century, we find ourselves on the brink of yet another age in automobile history. Electric cars are set to make the gas guzzler out of date. __5__ Benz, Daimler and Parker would surely be amazed by how far their dreams have come.
A.But why were early electric cars not popular
B.However, they weren't without shortcomings.
C.They were also popular in European countries.
D.It allows people to travel great distances quickly, safely and cheaply.
E.And self driving cars may soon make human drivers a thing of the past.
F.At first, European models were far too expensive for most people to buy.
G.Many people think of electric vehicles as a new invention, but actually that's not the case.

4.答案:B
解析:上文“They were quiet ... especially for women.”提到电动汽车的优点;下文“They were difficult ... were also rather expensive.”

Tomorrow's menus could feature items prepared with complex cooking techniques and presentation—all at the push of a button. Columbia University mechanical engineers have designed a 3 D printer that can produce and cook dishes at the same time with details at the millimeter scale.
The design combines a multiwavelength laser (激光) cooker, roughly the size of five smart phones piled together, with a microwave oven sized food printer. The system uses various light wavelengths to cook in different ways: a short waved blue laser goes deep inside meat, for example, while infrared beams (红外线光束) brown the surface. As the device's robotic arm places fine layers of chicken puree (酱,糊), a high powered beam moves over them and cooks the meat—with literally laser focused precision. Thus, users can achieve perfect results—say, a machine made burger that varies between rare and well done in a checkerboard pattern.
“It gives you a lot more control and customization,” says Jonathan Blutinger, lead author of the paper and a digital cooking researcher at Columbia. The researchers tested only chicken for this study, but the system can work with other foods as well.
Beyond applying diverse materials and presentation patterns, this type of software controlled setup could someday scan a QR code to automatically prepare dishes tailored to individual eating habits and dietary restrictions, Blutinger says.
The new technology is “astonishing”, says Megan Ross, a food scientist who studies 3 D printing at Ireland's University College Cork. Ross notes that the design is still at a beginning stage and that many technical challenges remain, such as preventing cross pollution between layers of raw and cooked meat. Still, Ross is impressed by the device's ability to produce foods outside the field of conventional cooking. “Is this going to be sold in shops everywhere in the next few years No,” she says. “But everyone has to start somewhere.”

Joyce Loaiza, aged 81, lives alone, but when she returns to her apartment at a Florida senior community, she often has a chat with a friendly female voice that asks about her day. A few miles away, the same voice comforted 83 year old Deanna Dezern when her friend died. In central New York, it plays games and music for 92 year old Marie Broadbent, who is blind and in a hospice (救济院), and in Washington, it helps 83 year old Jan Worrell make new friends.
The women are some of the first in the country to receive the robot ElliQ, whose creators, Intuition Robotics, say it is the only device to use artificial intelligence specifically designed to help many older Americans who live alone.
“It's interesting. You can actually talk to ElliQ,” said Loaiza. “She'll make comments like, ‘I would go outside if I had hands, but I can't hold an umbrella.’”
The robot, which looks like a small table lamp, has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and swivels (旋转). It remembers each user's interests and their conversations, helping plan future chats.
ElliQ tells jokes and plays music. On a video screen, it provides tours of cities and museums. It leads exercises, asks about the owner's health and gives reminders to take medications. It can also host video calls and contact relatives, friends or doctors in an emergency. But none of the conversations are heard by the company, with the information staying on each owner's robot.
The idea of ElliQ is for a robot that keeps seniors company by adapting to their individual personality and interests, said Dor Skuler, the CEO of the company. The average user talks with ElliQ more than 30 times daily, even 6 months after receiving it, and more than 90% report lower levels of loneliness, Skuler added.

Interviewer: So are most of the new great inventions tech based
Richard: A lot, yes. For example, advances in virtual reality and wearable tech, as well as7 the flexible battery, mean we should soon be seeing further developments8. In addition, important advances have been made in medicine and environmental science thanks to increasing computer power.

Interviewer: Can you give us some examples
Richard: Sure.

Interviewer: I see. So what is it that inspires us to invent things13
Richard: Most inventions start with recognising a problem that14 needs a solution.

This is the one everyone really wants to know19: will anybody ever invent a time machine
Richard: I think you've been watching too many movies20! Nothing like this has been invented yet and I'd say we're a long way from an invention like that at the moment! But, as they say, “Never say never!”

1.What makes the new design different from a common cooker
A.It works automatically.
B.It is attached to a printer.
C.It cooks the whole of food.
D.It can process various materials.
2.How does the design work
A.By customizing the dishes.
B.By accessing 3 D technology.
C.By turning the food upside down.
D.By using beams of diverse wavelengths.
3.What is the new advantage of the design
A.It is more flexible to operate.
B.It can process meat.
C.It avoids cross food pollution.
D.It can be applied to QR code.
Blutinger says.(布鲁丁格说,除了应用不同的材料和展示模式外,这种由软件控制的装置有朝一日可以扫描二维码,根据个人的饮食习惯和饮食限制自动准备菜肴。)” 故选A。
4.What can we infer about the design from Ross' words
A.It makes a meaningful start. B.It will be well received soon.
C.It goes well with technology. D.It is well thought of by the public.
故选A。
