FRANKLIN'S EXPERIMENT: How Much Is True
Benjamin Franklin's famous experiment with lightning has introduced generations of children to science. However, new research suggests that1 the story may be fiction instead of fact. 1
The well known story is that2 the American Founding Father and scientist flew a kite during a storm in 1752. At that time, there was much interest in electricity. People wanted to know if3 lightning was really produced by electricity or something else. Franklin was one of them. He raised the kite with a piece of string tied to it4. A metal key was attached to the string. A flash of lightning hit the kite, and electricity was conducted through the string to the key. Franklin then touched the key with his finger and got an electric shock. This, he said, proved that5 lightning was a form of electricity.
For many years, schools have taught the story of Franklin's lightning experiment. More than one generation of schoolchildren has been amazed6 by his bravery and his scientific approach to looking for the truth7. Franklin, along with many other scientists, has inspired us and taught us that8 scientific experiments are important in order to establish the truth and to contribute towards later scientific discoveries and inventions9. 9“in order to do sth”结构,在从句中作目的状语
However, neither the story nor the details of the experiment are entirely true. Although10 it has been proved that11 Franklin's experiment took place, more than one scientist has questioned what12 really happened. The detail about the string and13 the key is true. But scientists all agree that14 if15 Franklin had actually touched the key, he would certainly have died from the electric shock.
Scientists often question accepted ideas because16 they want to establish the facts. Some have even questioned the story about the apple that17 fell on Newton's head and led him to come up with his theory of gravity. In fact, more than one account suggests that18 while19 Newton was certainly inspired by a falling apple, there is no proof that20 it hit him on the head.
Admittedly, fiction is often more interesting than the truth. People have been more inspired by Franklin's spirit of scientific exploration than by the facts themselves. But in science, facts should be proved by experiments and research, and21 we should not always22 believe everything we read or hear—even if it is a great story.

What if you could experience music in your body, rather than hear it through your ears That's the idea behind Patrick Hanlon's magic vests, which allow concertgoers who are deaf or hard of hearing to experience music. The magic vest is a wearable device that allows its user to experience touch through force, vibration and movement.
Hanlon is a co founder of Music: Not Impossible, an arm of Not Impossible Labs. This group creates and uses tech to try to transcend social barriers, including those around disability. Magic vests will promote inclusivity at live music performances.
Previous methods that deaf and hard of hearing individuals would use to enjoy live music included putting their hands on speakers. They could also hold a balloon to feel vibrations on their fingertips. The vests aim to allow for a totally new experience. Hanlon says that nobody expects that using the vests will be so engaging, and “when you see it in people's eyes, it's magical.”
Jay Zimmerman, a composer whose ability to hear was damaged, says the vests are an example of new technology offering more exciting flexibility than before. He hopes that soon these inventions will allow deaf kids to have experiences with real vibrations.
The vests are not limited to any particular type of music. Hanlon explained the vibration points can even be adjusted to fit a show's overall atmosphere.

Given the astonishing potential of AI to transform our lives, we all need to take action to deal with our AI powered future, and this is where AI by Design: A Plan for Living with Artificial Intelligence comes in. This absorbing new book by Catriona Campbell is a practical roadmap addressing the challenges posed by the forthcoming AI revolution (变革).
In__the__wrong__hands,__such a book could prove as complicated to process as the computer code (代码) that powers AI but, thankfully, Campbell has more than two decades' professional experience translating the heady into the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible and informative and which, by the close, will make you feel almost as smart as AI.
As we soon come to learn from AI by Design, AI is already super smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of “narrow AI” to Artificial General Intelligence. From there, Campbell says, will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set out to raise awareness of AI and its future now—several decades before these developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we keep control of artificial intelligence, or risk being sidelined and perhaps even worse.
Campbell's point is to wake up those responsible for AI—the technology companies and world leaders—so they are on the same page as all the experts currently developing it. She explains we are at a “tipping point” in history and must act now to prevent an extinction level event for humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out. Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all, and if you only read one book on the subject, this is it.

Dear Chris,
I am writing to share with you our annual school's Science Festival held last Friday. Nearly 200 students, selected from Grade 1 and Grade 2, competed with all their strength.
The festival was celebrated by holding various activities both indoors and outdoors, including armament model racing, water rocket launching, information literacy competition and so on, which has sparked students' growing love for science and technology. What impressed me most was the armament model racing.
The festival is highly spoken of, because it not only brings merry laughter to the whole playground, but also reminds us of paying more attention to technological achievements like air drone and being a well rounded person.

Today, with our physics teacher's help, we carried out an interesting experiment in class.
Before we started, we prepared a candle, a basin, some water and a glass which was a little higher than the candle. First, we let the candle stand at the bottom of the basin and poured some water into the basin. Then we lit the candle and covered it with the glass. We waited until the candle went out.
To our astonishment, we saw that the height of the water in the glass was higher than that in the basin. How interesting an experiment lesson we had!

Drums in Space
Brenda Bongos was a happy, artistic girl, a girl with one big ambition—to play the drums in a band. But one big obstacle lay in her way. To be good enough to play in a band, Brenda had to practice a lot, but she lived next door to a lot of old people—many of them sick—in a care home. She knew that the sound of beating drums and crashing cymbals would really make them mad.
Brenda was a very good, respectful girl. She always tried to find a way of practicing her drums without bothering other people. So, she had tried playing in the strangest places: a basement, a kitchen, an attic, and even in a shower. But it was no good; there was always someone it would annoy. However, determined to practice as much as she could, Brenda spent most of her time playing on books and boxes, and looking for new places to practice.
One day, while watching a science documentary on TV, she heard that sound cannot travel in space, because there's no air. At that moment, Brenda Bongos decided to become a sort of musical astronaut.
With the help of a lot of time, a lot of books, and a lot of work, Brenda built a space bubble. This was a big glass ball connected to a machine which sucked out all the air inside. All that would be left inside was a drum kit and a chair. Brenda got into the space suit she had made, entered the bubble, turned on the machine, and ...
She played those drums like a wild child!
It wasn't long before Brenda Bongos—“The Musical Astronaut”—had become very famous. So many people came to see her play in her space bubble that she had to mount a pair of speakers so that everyone could listen to her play. Shortly afterwards she came out of the bubble and started giving concerts. Her fame spread so much that the government proposed that she form part of a unique space journey.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

FRANKLIN'S EXPERIMENT: How Much Is True

Yours,
