TWENTY THOUSAND LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
In 1866, a terrible sea creature is seen by several ships. Biologist Professor Pierre Aronnax and his servant, Conseil, join a ship to find and kill the creature1. After a long journey into the Pacific Ocean, the creature is finally seen. While attacking2 from the ship, Aronnax and Conseil, along with the whale hunter Ned Land, fall into the sea, and discover that3 the “creature” is actually a submarine. They are captured and taken inside the submarine, where4 they meet the man in charge, Captain Nemo. Ahead of its time, the submarine is also a secret from the rest of the world. In order to keep this secret, Captain Nemo tells his three newest passengers that5 they are not permitted to leave the submarine. While6 Ned Land can think only of escaping, Aronnax and Conseil are fascinated by their adventures in the new underwater world. In this part adapted from a chapter of the book7, Aronnax describes the experience of walking on the sea bed ...
And now, how can I look back upon the impression left upon me by that walk under the waters Words are not enough to relate such wonders! Captain Nemo walked in front, one of his men following some steps behind8. Conseil and I remained near each other, as if9 an exchange of words had been possible through our metal cases. I no longer felt the weight of my clothes, or of my shoes, of my air supply, or my thick helmet, inside which10 my head shook like a nut in its shell.
The light, which11 lit the soil thirty feet below the surface of the ocean, astonished me by its power. The solar rays shone through the watery mass easily, and consumed all colour, and I clearly distinguished objects at a distance of a hundred and fifty yards. Beyond that the colours darkened into fine shades of deep blue, and gradually disappeared. Truly this water which12 surrounded me was but another air heavier than the Earth's atmosphere, but almost as clear. Above me13 was the calm surface of the sea. We were walking on fine, even sand, not wrinkled, as on a flat shore, which14 keeps the impression of the waves. This dazzling carpet, really a reflector, drove away the rays of the sun with wonderful intensity, which15 accounted for the vibration which passed through every atom of liquid. Shall I be believed when16 I say that, at the depth of thirty feet, I could see as if I was in broad daylight 11引导非限制性定语从句,解释说明The__light 12引导定语从句,修饰this__water 13介词短语作表语,本句是倒装句,结构为“表语+系动词+主语” 14引导非限制性定语从句,解释说明a flat shore 15引导非限制性定语从句,解释说明前面整个主句 16引导时间状语从句
(Adaptation from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne)

Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica, L' Austral's Captain Fabien's voice woke us up as it came through a loudspeaker. If we looked outside right now, he said, we'd see a beautiful sea of icebergs in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed, staring in amazement as we sailed past giant pieces of ice. In the distance, we spotted a group of humpback whales feeding on smaller fishes. Next door, my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica. Over breakfast, my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning.
You might not immediately think of “family vacation” when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour companies like Adventures by Disney are changing that. The company offers guided group trips to destinations across all seven continents in the world.
Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day. After leaving Buenos Aires, we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney plane. Then, it was the journey toward the Drake Passage. After a speedy Drake Passage crossing, we reached Antarctica early, adding a half day to our scheduled four days on and around the continent.
To those unfamiliar with Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica—the most distant, extreme continent—with Disney might be surprising. During the trip, there were thoughtful acts, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a champagne (香槟) party on our final stop of the journey; Adventures by Disney truly thought of everything for us. Antarctica is a life changing destination packed with experiences that can't be copied. We experienced seasickness when travelling across the Drake Passage, hiked up ice hills alongside lovely animals, and had a taste of champagne. And honestly, it's going to be hard for the next family trip we may take to compete.

Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The root of “courage” is “cor”, the Latin word for heart. In the beginning, courage meant “to speak one's mind by telling all one's heart”. While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.
I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain climbing trip with my 15 year old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn't breathe properly.
Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check out on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.
“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter, “I was just like you when I started. But with practice and proper pace, you'll get there too.”
“Yeah, don't let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It's okay to admit when you're struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it's important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That's how we improve and grow.”
Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.
I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it's okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I've come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.

A Pleasant Holiday Trip
The destination of our family vacation this year is Hangzhou. I bought the train ticket online, and then we took the high speed train to Hangzhou, enjoying the scenery outside the window along the way. This made the travel comfortable and fast.
My favorite scenic spot in Hangzhou is the famous West Lake. We were deeply impressed by its beauty. We walked along the shore of the lake, admiring its beauty. We watched boats slowly sailing on the lake, with waterbirds flying in the sky. We noticed tall trees along the shore with squirrels jumping in the treetops. Surrounded by distant green mountains, the West Lake looked like a fairyland on earth.

Aug. 5, 2024 Sunny
Yesterday, I, together with some tourists, took part in an underwater expedition organized by a travel agency in the West Sea, which left a deep impression on me.
We had many exciting activities, one of which was deep sea diving. During the diving, we enjoyed the undersea beauty and watched the marine life which we had never seen so close. What impressed me most was the exploration of the ruins of ancient civilizations under the sea. Seeing those ruins, I couldn't help wondering what the ancient people's life was like and what they experienced later.
As far as I'm concerned, this travel broadened our horizons as well as helped us learn more about the sea.
The four mountain climbers were still breathing heavily as they looked out into the distance. The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking. In all directions, valleys, forests and other mountains were laid out before them. They could even see the small wooden houses of the village where they had spent the night and the route they had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain. Laughing loudly, they were surprised at their courage in climbing such a steep and rocky mountain slope. Filled with an enormous sense of achievement, the four young climbers patted each other on the back.
As the other three continued to enjoy the views, Jason, the leader of the group, stared at the horizon with a troubled look on his face.
“What is it, Jason?” Sofia, the youngest of the group, asked.
“Those dark clouds in the distance mean a heavy storm is fast on the way,” Jason replied. He remembered the villagers had warned him of the unpredictable weather conditions on top of the mountain and that a terrible storm could appear from nowhere.
“But it's so warm and sunny here. I don't think the storm is coming this way,” Sofia said, more in hope than expectation.
However, Jason feared the worst and knew only too well what would happen if the storm caught them in the open. He addressed the group in a calm but serious tone, “If the storm hits us, the temperature will fall dramatically. The rain and mist will make it difficult for us to see where we are going and we could easily get lost or fall off a cliff. The wind will take our strength, so we need to get moving fast.”
The four mountain climbers packed up their facilities and immediately started back down the mountain. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the storm was upon them sooner that expected. The wind screamed in their ears, the driving rain stung (刺痛) their eyes and the mist made it impossible for them to see clearly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Each time we choose couraege, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little bettr.
5.Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage
A.To question the common belief of courage.
B.To argue for the true nature of courage.
C.To show the changing meaning of courage.
D.To compare different interpretations of courage.
6.What did the two students suggest the daughter do
A.Keep to a suitable pace.
B.Seek help whenever possible.
C.Challenge her own limits.
D.Stick with experienced climbers.
根据第五段中的“In fact, it's important ... improve and grow.(事实上,当你需要帮助时,大声说出来并寻求帮助是很重要的。这就是我们进步和成长的方式。)”可知,两位学生建议作者的女儿在需要时寻求帮助。故选B。
7.Which action in the mountain climbing story is an example of true courage
A.The mother asked the girl to rest.
B.The girl tried hard not to fall behind.
C.The two students pointed out the group's fault.
D.The group celebrated the reach of the mountain top.
根据第一段中的“I believe true ... how we feel”可知,真正的勇气是说出自己的想法;再根据倒数第二段中的“However, the two students ... in tough environments. (然而,这两名学生直接向正在庆祝的团队发表讲话,强调在艰难的环境中团结一致的重要性。)”可推知,两位学生说出自己的想法,指出团队的错误是真正勇气的体现。故选C。
8.What does the author intend to tell us
A.Kindness connects us all.
B.Being a beginner takes courage.
C.We don't have to be a hero to be brave.
D.With courage, everyone can be perfect.
通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中的“While courage is ... how we feel.”

The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking. had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain.
