Teenagers have their own TV channels, websites and magazines. So what about books?
Last year one publisher, Martins, started publishing a series called Waves. We spoke to the director Julia Smith. She explained, "Teenage fiction has been published since the 1970s but publishers have never been very successful in getting teenagers to buy and read books. Now they're realizing that teenagers are just older children, but are not adults either. They are often not interested in adult fiction. For this series we are looking for new writers who write especially for teenagers.
Athene Gorr's novel was published in the series last year and is selling well. Its title is The Purple Ring. She says, "The important thing is to encourage teenagers to pick up your book. I'm a new writer. Although I've got an unusual name which people might remember, nobody knows it yet! But my book has a fantastic cover which makes people want to look inside. Then they realize what an excellent story it is!"
And what do teenagers themselves think about the series? We talked to Sophie Clarke, aged 15. She said? "I've read a few books in the Waves series. They say they are for 14-19 year olds and I agree with that. We're not interested in the same things as people in their twenties and thirties. I like them and I think they look really good too. The only thing is that because bookshops put them in the children section, lots of teenagers won't find them so they may not do very well. And it's a shame there's no such series as I think lots of teenagers, especially boys, might buy."
4. What can we infer from Paragraph 2? ______
A. The Waves series are suitable for adults.
B. It is necessary to publish books aimed at teenagers.
C. Teenagers are more interested in reading nowadays.
D. Teenagers should be encouraged to read.
5. What makes The Purple Ring catch people's eye? ______
A. Its writer.
B. Its cover.
C. Its price.
D. Its title.
6. What do we know about the Waves series? ______
A. They have attractive covers.
B. They are about real facts.
C. They are popular with teenage boys.
D. They are wrongly placed in the children section.
7. What does the author intend to do with the passage? ______
A. To compare different series of teenage fiction.
B. To give information about a new series of books.
C. To encourage more writers to create fictions for teenagers.
D. To explain why teenage fiction is easier to write than adult fiction.
C
“There’s no place like home.” This English saying has much truth in it: the best place to be is surrounded by our treasured possessions (所有物) and our loved ones and with a roof over our head. And for many young adults, it’s the only affordable place to stay: somewhere where they can receive first-class service from Mum and Dad. But this comes at a price!
In some countries, it’s quite traditional for people in their late teens and early 20s to live at home with their parents, but in other places, flying the nest to start their own independent life is very desirable. But there’s been a growing trend, in the UK at least, for young people to return home to live — or not to leave home at all.
A survey found that 18% of adult children in the UK said they were moving back home because of debt, compared with 8% last year. More young people had lost their jobs, and others couldn’t afford their rent compared with the previous year. So, it’s easy to see why they’re increasingly becoming home birds.
The BBC’s Lucy Hooker explains that many returning adult children enjoy home comforts. But for the“hoteliers”, that’s Mum and Dad, the survey found the average cost to them has gone up sharply, and that they are sacrificing (牺牲) luxuries and holidays to look after their “big kids”. Emma Craig from Money supermarket says “They’re trying to look after their children more. If your child comes home and you see them struggling financially (经济上), you feel more awkward (令人尴尬的) asking them for rent or to contribute.”
With parents spending around 1,886 on takeaway food, buying new furniture and upgrading their Wi-Fi for the benefit of their offspring, it’s easy for the returning children to put their feet up and make themselves at home. That’s before they learn a home truth — that one day it might be their own kids who’ll be checking into the hotel of Mum and Dad!
8. Which proverb might present the young British’s living conditions
A. A lazy youth, an awful age. B. Two heads are better than one
C. East or west, home is best. D. Nothing comes wrong to a hungry man.
9. Which might be the reason for the increase of home birds
A. The popularity of living independently. B. Looking after their old parents.
C. The increase of unemployment rate. D. Their parents’ financial offer.
10. What’s Emma Craig’s attitude towards home birds
A. Doubtful. B. Uncertain. C. Negative D. Understandable.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Returning to live with parents comes at a price.
B. Parents are willing to receive their returning children.
C. Flying the net is becoming popular at present.
D. Home birds take it for granted to live with their parents.
D
In the past few weeks, Richard Eckersley has noticed a change in the type of people who come into his shop. In 2017, the former Manchester United footballer set up Earth. Food. Love in Tones, Devon, with his wife, Nicola. It’s the UK’s first “zero waste” store—the food is in big jars and boxes and people bring their own containers. “A lot of new people are coming in-people who have not necessarily been interested in environmental issues before”, he says.
Recently, the government called for supermarkets to introduce plastic-free passageways. But Eckersley says many customers are already way ahead of politicians. He and Nicola have helped people set up similar stores in Wales, Birmingham, and Bristol. Ingrid Caldironi had a similar idea. She set up a plastic-free shop in London last year, which has been so popular that it is soon moving to a bigger site.
Eckersley and Caldironi are members of an anti-plastics movement in the UK that has been growing as a result of the BBC’s Blue Planet series and a general worry about the damage plastic is doing to the environment. But big supermarkets have so far not tried very hard to reduce their plastic waste. Sian Sutherland, founder of the movement “A Plastic Planet”, says, “The most exciting thing is that politicians and industry are no longer saying that recycling will solve the problem. Banning the use of plastic packaging for food and drink products is the only answer.” Walking down the passageways of the supermarket where everything from pizza to fresh fruit and vegetables is covered in plastic. Sutherland says immediate action is needed.
Plastic pollution is causing widespread global damage. More than one million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute, and most end up in landfill or the sea. The contamination is so wide that tap water around the world also contains plastic.
12. What is special about Earth. Food. Love
A. It gives away boxes of food. B. It is a store without plastic bags.
C. It has few new customers. D. It is the UK’s first supermarket.
13. What caused Caldironi’s shop to be relocated to a larger place
A. Its popularity. B. Its products. C. Its profits. D. Its similarity.
14 What does the underlined word “contamination” in last paragraph mean
A. Pollution. B. Acceptance. C. Influence. D. Application.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The impact of BBC’s Blue Planet series on anti-plastics movements.
B. Rising anti-plastics movement alongside increasing environmental concerns.
C. A guide to setting up plastic-free stores to promote recycling in the whole UK.
D. Richard Eckersley’s personal journey in waste reduction and pollution prevention.

If you do want to revise, design a workable schedule for your revision and stick to it. There are different ways to revise. You could create flash cards to test your knowledge of facts, ask a friend to test you on what you’ve both learnt, and explain what you’ve learnt to an adult to practice your explaining skills. ___19___
