Shirley Raines makes the homeless community in Los Angeles’s skid row (贫民窟) neighborhood feel human.
She is the founder of Beauty 2 The Streetz, a nonprofit organization that provides free food, clothing, haircuts, and
make-up services for the homeless. And Shirley is now the CNN Hero of the Year!
In 1990, Raines’ 2-year-old son Demetrius passed away from accidental poisoning while at his grandma's
house. This event caused a lot of pain for Shirley Raines. The pain lasted for many years. And she did not know
what to do about it. She struggled to understand what her purpose was in life. Until one day six years ago, Shirley
visited the skid row with a friend from church who asked her to volunteer. She met a lot of homeless people and
realized how much help they needed, not just in finding a home, but in finding themselves and their own worth and
beauty.
Shirley started to volunteer every Saturday. As she got to know the homeless, they often praised her for her
make-up, hair, and style. She started to offer “make up” to the homeless. They loved it, she loved it, they loved
her and she loved them. She found purpose. So she started an outdoor beauty salon to serve the homeless, which
took most of her spare time.
Raines started sharing her efforts on Instagram with photos and even livestreaming (网络直播) some of her
events. Things took off. She formed her nonprofit organization, Beauty 2 The Streetz, and her followers quickly
began donating money or time to expand Shirley’s impact. Her Instagram followers grew to over 200,000 people,
including many beauty professionals such as licensed hairstylists, barbers, make-up artists. Many of them regularly
donate money to keep the services rolling. Others donate their time to help Shirley serve the homeless.
Shirley’s boldness, caring, courage, consistency, and desire to take action have led to making a real impact on
people’s lives. And she also serves as a role model for and an inspiration to others.
24. How did Shirley relieve her sad feeling and live purposefully
A. By livestreaming her daily life. B. By giving a hand to the homeless.
C. By taking good care of her family members. D. By interacting with her fans in her free time.
25. What is most likely to make Shirley become the CNN Hero of the Year
A. Her strong character. B. Her make-up skills.
C. Her creative idea. D. Her charitable acts.
26. Why are some beauty professionals mentioned in the fourth paragraph
A. To show their contributions to the organization. B. To introduce the regulation of Shirley's program.
C. To explain the structure of the organization. D. To demonstrate the diversity of volunteers.

A. Think twice before we leap. B. Stay optimistic all the time.

Not long ago, you had to physically hand over cash to buy something. You witnessed it exit your wallet. You
sensed it. But with payment services Klarna or Clearpay, you can now pay for a new phone in three installments
(分期付款) and barely notice the difference. This isn’t just a shopping habit; it’s a reflection of how we relate to
money today. We are becoming increasingly free of the emotional burden of spending. Additionally, our mental
health is being profoundly affected by this quiet shift.
The popularity of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) plans has soared(急升). They promise freedom and flexibility,
but the ease of use can trick our minds. When payment is divided into smaller payments, we are wired to feel less
emotionally tired. Although the 15 payments seem insignificant, they quickly add up. Psychologists found that
when the act of paying is separated from the act of purchasing, we experience less “pain of paying”, which makes
us more likely to overspend. In societies where digital credit is easily accessible but financial education is limited,
this behaviour can fall into lasting debt. Stress over money doesn’t stay in the bank. It follows us into our homes
and even our sleep. Researches have shown that personal debt is strongly associated with depression and anxiety.
That’s why we need to talk about money more often — not just how to make it, but how we feel about it — in
families, schools, workplaces, and therapy rooms. Therapists should be able to ask about financial stress with
confidence. Financial education ought to be treated as essential in schools. Additionally, we should normalize
debt-related conversations to relieve people’s feelings of shame. Financial stress can make you feel helpless. But by
addressing the emotional side of money and building healthier habits, we can move from crisis to confidence.
We live in a world where money is invisible. But the emotional burden it takes is very real. If we start noticing
that cost, we might finally treat money not only as a resource, but as something deeply psychological.

Yet loneliness has become so widespread that it is often termed a modern epidemic. Why A common
explanation is the loss of “social connection.” What does it really mean to be socially connected Is it quantified by
the number of one’s friends both online and offline, or is it defined by the quality and depth of these relationships
However, some experts argue that loneliness transcends mere social isolation. It is possible to maintain hundreds of
digital connections yet still endure profound feelings of loneliness.
Norwegian writer Hilde stby, in her book So Lonely, suggests that loneliness emerges when there’s a gap
between the social connections we desire and those we actually possess. Individuals in densely populated urban
areas frequently report higher levels of loneliness than those in rural communities. While strong social ties can
reduce loneliness, close-knit societies report high loneliness rates.
stby further investigates the psychological and physical effects of loneliness. It is linked to emotions like
grief and shame, and it can even harm one’s health. She believes that loneliness is sometimes caused by social
division — marginalization (边缘化 ) due to racism, sexism, or other forms of prejudice. She coins the word
“lonelify” to describe this process — how people are deliberately made to feel excluded. However, loneliness is not
only caused by social exclusion. It can affect anyone, regardless of age or background. Although technology and
contemporary lifestyles may contribute to the problem, at its core, loneliness remains a profoundly human
experience.
stby’s book encourages us to rethink loneliness — not just as a personal issue, but as a social one. She calls
for more inclusive communities and reminds us that small acts of kindness, like a smile or a conversation, can help
others feel less alone. After all, in a world where so many feel lonely, connection might be the cure we all need.
32. What does the underlined word “transcends” in paragraph 1 most probably mean

A. It requires individual and societal efforts.
B. Technology is its root cause.
C. It mainly affects marginalized groups.
D. Small kindnesses are most effective.
35. What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage
A.Explain loneliness’s causes and solutions.

The last lesson of the day was PE class. Mary was skipping rope on the playground, surrounded by several
classmates watching her. It was her best sport. The rope spun (旋转) quickly as she jumped. When time was up, the
counter showed 201 skips. Smiling, Mary flashed a victory sign to the crowd. Just then, the school bell rang-class
was over. Mary packed up her skipping rope. It was time to give her answer to Ms. White.
That morning, Ms. White had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the class bulletin board (板
报) for the upcoming competition. The student who usually handled it, Lily, was sick, and someone needed to step
in. Mary was shocked that Ms. White had chosen her. She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was
terrible. But Ms. White reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged her to think it over and let
her know her decision after school.
Now, walking toward the teachers’ office, Mary felt nervous. The thought of her messy handwriting being put
up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn. She had already made up her mind to say no. With that
decision in mind, she quickened her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Mary was about to pass the sandpit (沙坑 ) when someone nearby caught her attention. It was Tom from a
different class. In her mind, Tom had never been good at long jump, but he was practicing it. Curious, she went
over to ask what he was doing. Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without
a participant, their class wouldn't get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the headteacher asked if
anyone would give it a try, he volunteered. Mary reminded him that he wasn't good at it, but Tom simply said that
he knew that and that it wasn't about being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went
back to practicing. What a similar issue they both faced.

where money is invisible. But the emotional burden it takes is very real. lf we start noticing that cost, we might
finally treat money not only as a resource, but as something deeply psychological(我们生活在一个看不见金钱的
However, some experts argue that loneliness transcends mere social isolation. it
is possible to maintain hundreds of digital connections yet still endure profound feelings of loneliness.(然而,一些
Norwegian writer Hilde stby, in her book So Lonely, suggests that loneliness
emerges when there' s a gap between the social connections we desire and those we actually possess.(那威作家
Hilde stby
根据最后一段中“ stby's book encourages us to rethink loneliness - not just as a personal issue,
but as a social one. She calls for more inclusive communities and reminds us that small acts of kindness, like a
smile or a conversation, can help others feel less alone.( stby在书中鼓励我们重新审视孤独一一它不只是个人
故选 A。
根据文章内容,尤其是最后一段中“ stby's book encourages us to rethink loneliness - not just
as a personal issue, but as a social one. She calls for more inclusive communities and reminds us that small acts of
kindness, like a smile or a conversation, can help others feel less alone.( stby在书中鼓励我们重新审视孤独--它
When it comes to health tips, all too often we tend to merely search for good habits that
而空格后的句子“Making small changes can bring big improvements in your health and well-being.(一些小的改
G项“However, breaking bad health habits is as important as developing good
ones(然而,改掉坏的健康习惯和养成好习惯一样重要)”可以衔接上下文,符合题意。故选 G项。
D项“But do you need to go to the gym five days a week(但是你需要一周
Being on your phone when you eat means you’re not paying attention to your food or allowing
yourself a break from that non-stop cyber chatter.(吃饭时玩手机意味着你没有注意到你的食物,也没有让自己
C项“Put your mobile out of reach and eat mindfully(把手机放在够不着的地方,用心吃东西)”符合题
意。故选 C项。
Socializing helps you
feel better about life. It might even sharpen your memory and help you live longer, according to some research. So
make a few dates with friends and family instead of being alone all the while.(社交让你对生活感觉更好。
B项“Avoiding people(不愿见
Being hard
on yourself(对自己苛刻)”和空格后的主句“it’s time to be kind to yourself(是时候善待自己了)”可知,只有
F项“If you’re struggling to meet exercise goals, or to get everything done(如果你正在努力达到锻炼目标,或

Dynasty, which is often considered the golden age of Chinese poetry. To help you better appreciate the context,

Dynasty, which would be of great benefit to understand the background of the poems.
I am looking forward to sharing these cultural treasures with you.
Yours,

One possible version:
Mary stood there, watching Tom practice patiently and hard. Every time he jumped, he would stumble a little,
but he never stopped. He wiped the sweat from his forehead, adjusted his posture, and tried again. Mary thought
about how Tom was willing to take on something he wasn’t good at—all just to help their class. She felt a little
ashamed of herself. She was so scared to show her bad handwriting, but what if she tried her best like Tom Maybe
the bulletin board wouldn’t be perfect, but she could put her whole heart into it. The nervous flutter in her stomach
slowly faded, and a new sense of determination took its place. She turned around and headed straight for the
teachers’ office, her steps no longer hesitant.
With determination, Mary stepped into the teachers’ office. Ms. White was sitting at her desk, grading papers.
When she saw Mary, she looked up and smiled. “Have you made your decision ” Mary took a deep breath and
nodded firmly, promising to take charge of the class bulletin board. “My handwriting isn’t good,” she added, “but
I’ll practice hard and do my best to make it nice. I want to help our class, just like Tom is doing.” Ms. White’s eyes
lit up with pride. She stood up and patted Mary’s shoulder. “That’s exactly what I wanted to hear, Mary. Bravery to
try is more important than being perfect. I’ll be right here to help you.” Mary left the office with a big smile on her
face, already looking forward to starting her new task.
