Need a reason to be happy Then you will be happy to know that March 20th is the International Day of Happiness.
The United Nations set up the International Day of Happiness in 2012 to remind us that happiness is a basic human goal (目标) and right (权利).
It was celebrated for the first time in 2013. On that day, we celebrated hundreds of “Happy Heroes”—those who did so much to bring happiness to others. They helped the homeless to live a comfortable life and the poor kids to go to school.
The 2014 Day of Happiness actions asked people to share pictures of making them happy. People all over the world showed their favorite pictures on the Internet. “It’s exciting to see so many people sharing photos of what makes them happy.” Joe, a senior high school student from Canada said. The 2015 Day of Happiness actions gave attention on relationships. Modern society is leaving more and more people feeling lonely. On that day, thousands of people all around the world reached out to make new connections with others. They visited their neighbors, gave calls to the doctors they didn’t know very well, drove the strangers to stations for free…

Mother’s Day is celebrated in the USA.It is also a holiday in some other countries. It is on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to thank mothers. On that day mothers usually receive flowers or cards. On the cards, children will write “Thanks, Mom” “To the best mother in the world” “Best wishes for Mother’s Day” and so on. We should make mothers happy on that day.
Where does the idea for the holiday come from We should thank Miss Anna M. Jarvis. She brought up the idea of having such a day. She lived in West Virginia. Her mother died on May 9th, 1905. She had a deep love for her mother. She wrote letters to some important persons. In her letters she asked them to decide a day for all mothers. Then Mother’s Day was made on the second Sunday in May by the USA in 1913.
In China, children give presents to their mothers on Mother’s Day, or the whole family go out and try to do something nice for their mothers. Because mothers always think of others more than themselves. Everybody should show his love to his mother and help her as much as possible.

Li Ming is going to study English in New York. He has not been there before and he is quite interested in the great differences between American and Chinese cultures.
For one thing, Americans and Chinese are different in arranging (安排) a visit. In many places of China, people usually call on their neighbors unexpectedly. Americans prefer making an appointment in advance (提前). An unexpected visitor is regarded as impolite.
For another thing, their table manners are different. Chinese usually eat directly from the serving dishes. And during the meal, the host may keep putting food on the guest’s plate. An American, however, only eats from his own plate. He never picks up food for others unless he is asked to do so.
Moreover, they have different reactions when they hear compliments (赞美). For example, when a Chinese hostess is praised for her cooking skills, she will instantly deny that because Chinese are often modest. But an American hostess is likely to accept it and say, “Oh, I’m glad you like it. I cooked it especially for you.”
At the beginning, it was hard for Li Ming to get used to things around him because of these cultural differences. But soon, he succeeded in adjusting to their ways of doing things. “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” He liked to say that when he was asked how he could get along in a new culture.

Can you take photos in the air Would you like to have a robot that talks to you like a human These inventions are real. They are really cool and fun. They also make life easier and more interesting.
Phototaking drone (无人机)
Spark is a camera drone. It can fly above your head and take photos. A Chinese company called DII made it. It is very small when folded (折叠), as small as a can of soda. Like other drones, you can control it with a remote control. But you can also control it with hand gestures.
Social robot
This little robot has a big head and a round body. It is Jibo, a “family robot”. The US company Jibo Inc. made it. Jibo almost seems alive. When you say “Hey, Jibo”, it will dance and turn to face you. When it talks, it moves its head and body. There are no eyes or mouth on Jibo’s face. But it can use animated icons (动画图标) to show feelings. Jibo can do simple things, such as taking photos and reading the news. But it might learn to do more in the future.

In our life, we meet quite a lot people: some just pass by while others can change our lives. Miss Bella is such a person. She taught me two years only. However, she has taught me a lot in many ways.
Every day she began her classes with a smile and a fresh face. She made me realize that warm smiles could change a person. I was shy but I wasn’t nervous in her classes at all. She gave lessons in a different way from other teachers. We had many chances to talk about problems in English classes. Miss Bella would thumb up (竖起大拇指) to encourage us when someone had great ideas. Now, I find that I have learned much from her classes. Learning to speak out your ideas is so important in society. She also made me realize that I could be myself by showing opinions bravely. Her encouragement not only turned me into a confident student, but will also lead me to a successful life.

I’ve never lived in a dorm (寝室) before. Studying in the US gave me this new experience. The dorm I lived in is called Village Girls. You need to bring your cleaning things and clothes from your home. But it’s also important to bring things you may find trivial, like toys or something you hold dear. You may think it unnecessary, but you’ll find that having something that reminds you of home can help you a lot.
When I first arrived, I only brought those things on the school list. However, there was an empty feeling in my heart, a sense of loneliness. There were no toys to hug at night, nor anything I could look at and be reminded of home. That’s when I realized that though we saw things like toys as unnecessary, we needed them more than anything else.
It is also important to make friends.Though most parents prefer you to find someone with good grades, I think it’s better to choose someone with a good heart. If you’re shy, it is even more important to greet everyone in your dorm. That’s because once you keep yourself away from others, people may think you are cold.
A friend of mine once told me, “No matter how much you've grown, you're still a kid at heart.” I’ve come to realize that it is true. No matter how old we are, our inner (内心的) selves still need love and comfort (安慰). With a friend and a toy in hand, I hope you’ll find joy no matter where you are.

A while ago I sent out a couple of hundred letters for information on subjects that interest me. One of the questions I asked was “When you think of love, what color comes to your mind ”
One person said “money”. I didn’t know what color that was, maybe green, but I wasn’t sure, so, I didn’t give it a color. Two people said love didn’t have any color. Two other people said love was the color of the rainbow. That’s a nice thought. Now only 3 people chose red as the color they thought of as love. This surprised me, since that is the color used most on Valentines’ Day (情人节). I guess passion doesn’t necessarily mean love. There was a tie of 4 each for white and yellow. I can understand wanting a pure love (white) or a wise and happy love (yellow). Pink is the choice of 5 people who I think need beauty in their lives. Six people said either lavender, lilac (紫丁香) or violet was the color of love. I think all of them want some magic and mystery in their love lives. Green was the color chosen by 7 people as the color they thought of as love. These people must want a balanced love and maybe some money too.
The most surprising answer was that 14 people picked blue. I think these people may know about love. Love should be sincere and true. Maybe if you have “the blues”, it is because you don’t have love. Most blues music is about lost love. Maybe blue is the color of love. I just can’t see sending a blue heart to my lover next Valentines’ Day.
This little survey is not scientific, but it is very interesting. Did you know not all people dream in color Well, I hope everyone makes sure to daydream in the most wonderful and wild colors possible.

An old saying goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.” It’s true that laughter is really good for our health. So, the next time you’re feeling stressed, try to laugh a lot, develop a sense of humor and watch funny films.
The Comic Relief charity, an organization that helps people in need, uses laughter to raise money. Every two years in spring, many English people put on a red nose, make a fool of themselves and do “silly” things to make themselves and others laugh. Examples of silly things you can do are:
Invite friends round to your house to watch funny films. They have to pay to watch the films and for food and drinks. Those with the most comfortable chairs pay more.
Hold a talent show at school and ask your friends and teachers to sing, dance or tell jokes. Sell tickets for the show to the rest of the school.
Have a red nose party at your house. All your friends come dressed in red, including red nose, and you serve red food and drinks. If they don’t wear red, they have to pay a fine(罚款).
Get the students in your school to make funny sculptures using all kinds of things. Sell tickets to your Red Nose Day exhibition and part of the money goes to Comic Relief.
The organization has helped people for more than 20 years. And how much have they collected since the first Red Nose Day Over 600 million! The idea of Red Nose Day has traveled to other countries, too. In New Zealand, for example, people have made big red noses which they put on the front of cars and even buildings.

A visit to the ancient city of Petra in Jordan is an amazing experience. The city is surrounded(环绕) by mountains of pink rocks. To reach it, tourists have to walk for more than a kilometer through a narrow gap(窄缝) in the rock. Then they come to a large building. The building is cut directly into a cliff(悬崖). Such beautiful rock-cut buildings make the city famous.
Two thousand years ago, the city was a busy and noisy place. At one time, more than 30,000 people lived there. This great city lasted for hundreds of years, but the pink rocks were not as safe as they seemed. Earthquakes destroyed(破坏) many of the buildings. As the years went by, people stopped living there. Finally, the world forgot the city of Petra.
In 1812, a Swiss explorer(探险家) heard about the lost city. Local people told him that it was in the mountains. And he paid a guide to take him there. When he returned to Europe, he wrote about Petra and people started visiting the city.
These days Petra is a busy place again. 每年一百多万名游客到那里去。But now the traders sell postcards, camel rides and cold drinks. There are museums, shops and restaurants, but nobody lives there. At night the ancient city is quiet again.

Reading Lu Xun’s articles has become common memories of Chinese students. From a young age, we study his articles such as From Baicao Garden to Sanuei Study and My Old Home. We get to know Runtu and Kong Yiji under his pen.
Lu Xun was born on Sept. 25, 1881, and his real name is Zhou Shuren. So many years has passed, but Lu Xun’s life experiences still encourage young people. He went to Japan to study medicine as his father died of illness. But seeing the dark side of Chinese society of the early 20th century, he decided to pick up a pen and write stories to show the dark side of society and tradition, trying to enlighten(启迪) people. Lu Xun also liked woodcut paintings(木版画). He started the New Woodcut Movement in the 1930s, encouraging more young artists to focus on woodcut paintings. He thought they were a useful art form to spread knowledge, culture and new ideas.
Though Lu Xun’s works were written in his time, they are still a part of pop culture. His words are often used in stories, videos, emojis and creative products. Lu Xun is also one of the most talked-about writers on the video website. By now, there are more than 13, 600 videos about him with 170 million views, according to the site.
Chinese writer Zhi An thinks it’s a good thing that his voice is still heard. In fact, Lu Xun was the one who was never afraid to draw attention. “Lu Xun was brave enough to fight against the rules. If you wanted him to be silent, he would speak out,” Zhi An wrote.

I enjoy visiting Mr. Wang because he tells me exciting stories about Hong Kong in the past. He also shows me old photos. Yesterday, I visited Mr. Wang after school. I asked him how long he had lived here. This is what he told me:
“I have lived in the neighborhood since 1993.Before I moved here, I lived in a small village called Pak Mong on Lantau Island. There were many people living in the village when I was young. Mobile phone has become a problem for middle schools. Some middle schools in Australia have banned (禁止) students from carrying mobile phones during school hours.
Mobile phone use among children has become a problem for the schools this year. Several children have got mobile phones as Christmas presents, and more students want them.
Mary Bluett, an official (官员) said mobile phone use is a distraction (分心) to students during school hours and it also gives teachers so much trouble in their classrooms. Teachers were also saying that sometimes students might use phone messages to cheat (作弊) during exams.
The official said some schools had tried to ban mobile phones. Some parents felt unhappy because they couldn’t get in touch with their children.
Many teachers said students should not have mobile phones at school, but if there was a good reason, they could leave their phones at school office. They also said there were many reasons why the students should not have mobile phones at school: they were easy to lose and were a distraction from studies.
Many people say that they understand why parents would like their children to have phones, but they think schools should let the students know when they can use their mobile phones.

Antarctica (南极洲) is known for being a large land of ice and snow, a place too cold for most life. However, the land is slowly starting to turn warm. According to The Guardian, the Antarctic has shown a new high temperature for the first time on record, raising fears of climate change in the world’s coldest place.
On Feb. 9, Brazilian researchers at Seymour Island reported a temperature of 20.75 ℃ on the icy land of Antarctica. It was almost a full degree higher than the past record of 19.8 ℃, taken on Signy Island in January 1982.
This record-breaking reading (数据) was taken at a watch station in the northern part of Antarctica. According to Brazilian scientist Carlos Schaefer, the temperature was recorded during a 20-year-long research project. The purpose of this project is to study the effect that climate change has on the permafrost (永冻土) within the area. Permafrost is the earth that stays icy for at least two years.
Although this is a first record high for Antarctica, Schaefer pointed out that “We can’t use this to predict climate changes in the future. It’s simply a sign that something different is happening in that area.”
But in fact, the last high temperature reading was around 19 ℃. These higher temperatures can cause ice in Antarctic area to melt (融化). This melted ice leads to a rise in sea levels that can put the coast areas in danger. It’s believed to be behind an alarming drop of more than 50 percent in the number of penguins, which are dependent on sea ice.
Like American writer Ernest Hemingway once said, “The Earth is a fine place and worth fighting for.” We should do everything we can to help save our planet. Otherwise, it may become too hot for us to live in.

Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms with a history of more than 200 years. It is said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved the theatre. At the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kunqu Opera was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Various local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Drawing on the good points of these local operas, the new Beijing Opera came into being and became Qianlong’s favorite.
Beijing Opera mixes different art forms, including singing, dancing, acrobatics and Wushu. All these art forms are put into one performance. Facial painting (脸谱) is one of the most important signs of Peking Opera. It shows the roles’ personalities. For example, a red face usually shows the role’s bravery; a white face shows the treachery and guile; a black face shows the role is a strict man.
Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, a famous performer, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background.” This is how one traveler described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.
Beijing Opera is China’s national opera and it is full of Chinese cultural traditions. Welcome to China and enjoy Beijing Opera.

The meaning of silence is different among different cultures.
Many people in some Asian cultures think silence is a basic part of communication. When a traditional Chinese or Thai is speaking and suddenly stops, he probably wants the listener to consider what he has said before he continues. Many people may think silence is a sign of respect, especially to an elder or a person with power.
Western cultures may use silence in other ways. In America, if you keep silent in a conversation, the speaker may think you’re impolite or not listening to them carefully. Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show they agree with the discussion of the topic. However, Mexicans may keep silent when instructions are given by a person with a lot of power, even though they don’t agree with the instructions.
In our daily life, if we know the exact meaning of one’s silence, it’s quite helpful, too. A man was ill in hospital. One morning, when the nurse said “Hello!” to him, he said “Hello!” back. “How are you feeling now ” the nurse continued. But the man lay in bed and looked at the nurse, saying nothing. “Not well, right Then I will check it for you, OK ” the patient was still silent. Then the nurse passed him a cup of warm water. He drank it quickly. After that, the nurse checked up his health. “Mr. Smith, your blood pressure is a little high. But don’t worry, you’ll soon be well again after taking some medicine.” The man smiled and said, “You’re the best nurse I’ve ever met.” You see, this is how silence works.
