My wife always wanted a Vizsla, so when we got the house, the garden and everything sorted, we did some research and found a lovely breeder (饲养员) based in Scotland. He was in charge of everything, so a few months go by and the next thing I know, we’ve got a puppy!
I’ve grown up with animals all my life, and I’m so glad I have. I love the fact that I was never afraid of any animals. Although you do obviously have to be careful when introducing children to a dog they don’t know, because you don’t know how it’s going to behave, it always saddens me when I see children scared when they walk past Pedro. I think it’s great for kids to learn how to look after an animal.
And obviously for us, as a family, it’s brilliant because we take Pedro for so many walks. It’s a bit of a family bonding experience getting out in the fresh air; taking Pedro for a walk multiple times a day is just really lovely. Meanwhile, the most rewarding, I think, is just seeing how amazing he is with the kids. He is so calm, so protective, so loving, and we are his world.
I think the most challenging aspects with Pedro were when he was a puppy (小狗). He was pretty hard work. He was never aggressive, but he was quite bitey as puppies are, constantly pulling out your clothes and putting holes in them, which is very annoying. He chewed the furniture-my sofas are barely standing up; their wooden legs are almost in pieces. Obviously, the dog training in the house was quite stressful and his jumping at strangers in the park and running off was always quite scary.
As a new puppy owner, you’re overloaded with advice from social media, magazines, other dog owners and friends, so finding a source of information you trust is so important and can be a real turning point. I know what it’s like to be bombarded with conflicting information, so I would have really welcomed Royal Canin’s “One in a Billion” platform as a new puppy owner. It’s a one-stop shop for new dog owners: a single source of credible information that is so helpful in navigating the early stages of your puppy’s life.

5 What does the author think of Pedro
A. Dangerous but loyal. B. Playful and gentle.
C. Adorable but troublesome. D. Annoying and fierce.
6. What can we infer according to paragraph 4
A. Dogs are man’s best friends.
B. It is worthless to have a dog.
C. Puppies are unfriendly to humans.
D. It is challenging to train a puppy.
7. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To recommend a reliable platform.

Air conditioning use has exploded in the last 30 years. According to U. S. Census data in1993, just about three- quarters of single family homes in the Midwest had air conditioning. In the West and Northeast, it was just about half. Now, all regions are pushing 100 percent air conditioning coverage. In the South, it’s been at about 100 percent since the early 1990s.
As the cost of air conditioning installation has gone down, and temperatures have gone up, Americans have been offered an opportunity for a steady indoor temperature year-round, regardless of the weather outside. This drive for comfort forces us to disconnect from what’s happening all around us. A conditioned climate allows us to completely ignore the changing seasons and our warming planet. Only listening to people who agree with us — or trying to silence those who disagree — creates our own, individually conditioned realities.
New York University professor and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt showed how the comforts of conveniences “atomize” our social structures. Each new technology that makes our lives easier also makes us less reliant on other people. Haidt’s big focus is on smartphones and social media, as explored in his recent book, but our society was cracking off into smaller and smaller pieces long before we had the robots in our pockets.
Cars allowed us to shop in other towns, reducing reliance on local businesses. A television set gave something for people to do in the evenings, reducing the need to hang out with neighbors, and by extension, eroding community structures and institutions (often called “third places”, in contrast to work and home). Air conditioning allowed us to stay inside in the heat, limiting a play-based childhood where kids run around with each other and make their own fun.
What if we all turned off the air conditioning for a bit, opened our windows, and truly experienced life as it was happening, not what we manufactured it to be We might be a little less comfortable, but maybe a little more connected.
8. What can we infer from the first two paragraphs
A. Air conditioning easily shapes our individual personality.
B. Air conditioned houses are more comfortable than others.
C. Air conditioning can reduce our connection with the world.
D. Air conditioning is accessible to every household in the US.
9. Why does the author mention Haidt
A. To promote his recent book. B. To illustrate technological advances.
C. To praise human self- reliance. D. To reveal the harm of air conditioning.
10. What does the word “eroding” underlined in paragraph 4 refer to
A Constructing. B. Destroying.
C. Avoiding. D. Improving.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Turn off Air Conditioning for a Bit B. Experience Your Life to the Fullest
C. Keep Away from Air Conditioned Houses D. Never Create Our Own Conditioned Realities
D
The social media platform Instagram once made headlines for limiting likes in an effort to reduce the comparisons and hurt feelings resulting from attaching popularity to sharing content. But do these efforts resolve mental health issues, or are they simply applying a band-aid to a wound
It’s a small step in the right direction, says Jacqueline Sperling, a psychologist who works with youth who experience anxiety disorders.“Even if you remove the likes, there continue to be opportunities for comparisons and feedback. People still can compare themselves to others, and people still can post comments.”
Social platforms are designed to be addictive and are related to anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments(小病).This puts a large amount of the population at an increased risk of feeling anxious, depressed, or ill over their social media use. But what makes users come back for more even when it can literally make them feel sick
“When the outcome is unpredictable , the behavior is more likely to repeat. Think of a slot machine(老虎机): if game players knew they were never going to get money by playing the game, then they never would play,” says Sperling. “The idea of a potential future reward keeps the machines in use. The same goes for social media sites. One does not know how many likes a picture will get, who will like the picture, and when the picture will receive likes. The unknown outcome and the possibility of a desired outcome can keep users engaged with the sites.”
FOMO-fear of missing out - also impacts the youth greatly. Teenagers hope to keep track of friends’ activities. If everyone else is using social media sites, and if you don’t join in, there’s concern that you’ll miss chats, jokes, connections, or invitations. Missing experiences can create anxiety and depression. When people look online and see they’re excluded from an activity, it can affect thoughts and feelings, and can affect them physically.
In addition to limiting likes, as Instagram has done, Sperling suggests social platforms consider decreasing mass sharing. They might function more as messaging services by highlighting one-on-one communications. Regardless of how likely social media giants are to change their ways, though, individuals can take control of their own behavior.
12. What does Sperling think of Instagram’s measure
A. It’s strict. B. It’s limited. C. It’s objective. D. It’s conservative.
13. What is probably the major reason for social media addiction
A. Need for self-expression.
B. Desire for constant recognition.
C. Expectation of possible surprises.
D. lack of interest in real-life activities.
14. What does Sperling alvise social platforms to do in the last paragraph
A. Restrict their service scales.
B. Decrease one-on-one interactions
C. Limit the time users spend on them.
D. Shift the focus from sharing to messaging.
15. What might the author continue talking about
A. Redesign of social media platforms. B. Changes made by social media giants.
C. Strategies for individuals’ self-control. D. Impact of social media on mental health.

第四部分 书面表达(满分25分)
61. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the first week of Lily’s middle school. The bell’s ringing brought her out of her daydreaming. She nervously gathered her books, preparing to reach another classroom for the next new class.
Lily followed the other kids and rushed into the hallway. Others walked in groups, chatted, and laughed, using the break to socialize. Lily, instead, walked alone along the wall of the hallway, with her head down. She was a shy girl, afraid to speak in front of other kids, and didn’t think others would like her.
Lily finally sat in Mr. Johnson’s Language Arts class nervously. “Welcome to Language Arts,” said Mr. Johnson. He told jokes as he talked about English. Lily forgot to daydream and laughed along with the rest of the class. “We’ll have some fun with language,” he said. “Just wait and see.”
Fun was far beyond what Lily desired. She just wanted to be like other kids—running with friends in the hallway, laughing and joking between classes. Reminded of her pimply (长粉刺的) face, she felt hopeless and disappointed.
“Take out a piece of paper,” the teacher continued, when pointing at words on the blackboard. “Write for the next thirty minutes on this topic.” Lily began writing crazily as idea after idea fought for recognition in her head. The final result was a short story about a beautiful beach house. As she wrote, she could smell the salty air, hear the crashing waves and feel the pull of the sand beneath her feet. For just a moment, she forgot where she was. She was lost in the story.
“OK, pass your papers forward,” said the teacher. “Let’s see what we have.” For the rest of the class time, the teacher read each individual work aloud. Lily originally thought it would be awkward. However, she was gradually attracted by the excitement in the teacher’s voice. “He’s actually enjoying this,” she thought. When the class would be soon over, there were still fifteen students’ papers not read, including Lily’s paper. Then, Mr. Johnson announced his decision, asking these students to read their work themselves in front of the class next class.
