A famous magazine recently featured some of the UK’s coolest, toughest, and most fun races.
Top of the Wolds 10K Challenge
This 10-km race is in pretty Yorkshire. It’s mostly fun, but after you turn left at Nunburnholme, you must climb 1.5 km up a hill. Then you can run down, see great views, and go back to where the race starts.
Scurry 2 Bridges Run
It is a relay race (接力赛) covering 161 kilometers. The race is divided into 16 parts, and each participant (参与者) runs 4 different parts throughout the day. It’s like running a marathon for each person! The participants are supported by a team that takes care of transportation between the exchange points.
Scafell Sky Race
If you’re an experienced runner looking for a challenge, you are sure to be interested in Scafell Sky Race. It’s a tough trail run with a total ascent (上坡路) of 2,800 meters, making it one of the hardest races out there. But don’t worry, the breathtaking views along the way make it worth it. After completing the race, runners can enjoy hot food and apple juice.
Offa’s Dyke 15
Offa’s Dyke 15 is a famous 15-mile race. It starts at the Clock Tower in Hay-on-Wye, goes up some hard hills, and finishes in Kingston. This year there is also a new and easier choice: a 10-km loop (环形) around Kingston for people who want a shorter and less tiring run.

Sean McComb, the National Teacher of the Year, is halfway through his exciting journey across the country. He has met many good educators. During his journey, he has shared valuable lessons from his eight years of teaching at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts in Baltimore, Maryland. Sean worked with a program called AVID, which helped students who faced challenges similar to those he faced when he was younger.
Sean described his own experiences as a student. Growing up, he faced many challenges at home. These difficulties made school feel impossible, and for a time, he got to the point where he was apathetic about school, about his own future. But then he had the experience of two warm-hearted teachers coming into his life. They believed in him and helped him see a better future. This inspired Sean to help other students do the same, and that’s why he became a teacher.
Sean attended Upper Merion Area High School outside Philadelphia, where he had the chance to explore his interests and find support through project-based learning. In literature class, he learned how stories could open up new possibilities, and after-school activities gave him a safe place to be in. These experiences helped him believe that education could change his life.
After studying literature and education at the University of Pittsburgh, Sean returned to Patapsco High School. The school had gone through some challenging times, but Sean made up his mind to change the situation. He started as an English teacher and then taught in a program called AVID, which focuses on students who may not have special support but have the potential (潜能) to succeed. Sean worked with his students for three years, building strong relationships that helped them reach their full potential.
4. What does the underlined word “apathetic” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Feeling excited. B. Sounding curious. C. Showing no interest. D. Having no difficulty.
5. What made Sean become a teacher
A. A fun after-school activity. B. His parents’ expectations.
C. An impressive experiment. D. His teachers’ encouragement.
6. What did Sean think of his life at Upper Merion Area High School
A. It was aimless. B. It was meaningful.
C. It was full of challenges. D. It was similar to the lives of other students.
7. What effect did the program AVID have on Sean’s students
A. It inspired them to support one another. B. It caused them to focus on campus life.
C. It helped them realize their potential. D. It made them develop survival skills.

Now the world faces many extreme weather events, like wildfires in the USA and Europe that destroy forests, floods in India that damage homes, and very hot heat waves that make daily life hard. Many people feel time is running out and think we can’t solve big environmental problems. This helpless feeling even stops some from taking action. But there is hope: We’ve solved really hard environmental problems before.
One example is acid rain (酸雨), a top environmental problem in the 1990s. It was caused by burning coal, which makes a gas called sulfur dioxide (二氧化硫). Acid rain hurt ecosystems badly: It made forest leaves fall off, took nutrients from soil, and polluted rivers and lakes. What’s more, it crossed borders — smoke from the UK blew to Sweden, and from the US to Canada — so no country could solve it alone. But countries cooperated: They signed international agreements, set limits on power plant emission (排放), and started using less coal. Later, Europe’s sulfur dioxide emission dropped 84% and America’s 90%.
We also fixed the ozone (臭氧) hole. It was a tough problem too, as no single country caused all the harmful emissions. Only when many countries joined hands did things get better. After signing the Montreal Protocol, emissions of ozone-harming substances fell over 99%.
These successes give us key lessons for climate change. Cheap clean technologies help a lot. Solar and wind energy are much cheaper now than 10 years ago, and electric cars are more common — one in seven new cars sold worldwide is electric. Climate agreements need time to improve. The first goals are often too weak, but countries can raise them later.
Climate change is harder than past problems — it needs rebuilding energy, transport and food systems that support our modern world. But small changes are already happening. Yet progress could perhaps be quietly encouraged if we allow the lessons of past successes to guide our next steps.
8. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By giving examples. B. By explaining reasons.
C. By providing solutions. D. By showing findings.
9 What can we learn from fixing acid rain and the ozone hole
A. Laws should punish polluters.
B. Technology alone is enough.
C. Rich countries must pay more.
D. Working together is important.
10. What should we do to fight climate change according to the text
A. Learn from the past successes.
B Stop burning coal immediately.
C. Follow the former agreements.
D. Wait for new inventions to appear.
11. In which part of a newspaper can you read the text
A. Education. B. Culture.
C. Business. D. Environment.

A recent study suggests that vitamin D supplements could help protect telomeres (端粒), the protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes, which play a key role in aging. Telomeres act like the plastic tips of shoelaces, protecting DNA when cells (细胞) divide. Every time a cell divides, telomeres get shorter. When they become too short, cells can no longer divide and finally die. Shortened telomeres have been linked to aging-related illnesses like heart disease.
Vitamin D is well-known for its role in supporting bone health by helping the body take in calcium. It is especially important for children, teenagers, and people with dark skin or little sun exposure to keep healthy bones. Besides, vitamin D is important for the immune (免疫的) system. Early research also suggests it might protect against autoimmune illnesses like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis, although more studies are needed.
In a recent study by researchers from Augusta University in the US, 1,031 people aged65 and older took 2,000 IU (international units, a standard vitamin measurement) of vitamin D every day for five years. The results showed that the telomeres of the vitamin D group were preserved by 140 base pairs, compared to those of people who didn’t take vitamin D. Normally, telomeres shorten by around 460 base pairs over ten years, so the results suggest that vitamin D may have a meaningful protective effect.
However, some researchers warn that having extremely long telomeres may increase the risk of disease. There’s also no clear agreement on the best vitamin D dosage (剂量). The recommended intake is currently 600 IU for people under 70 and 800 IU for older adults, but some studies suggest that even 400 IU could be effective.
While these findings are promising, it’s still too early to start taking high dosages of vitamin D to slow aging. However, for those who are at risk for bone health issues, vitamin D is still a good choice.
12. What is the main role of telomeres according to the text
A. To speed up the aging process. B. To enable cells to grow quickly.
C. To help the body take in vitamin D. To protect DNA during cell division.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The importance of bone health. B. How the immune system works.
C. The advantages of vitamin D. How we can build a strong body.
14. What can we know about vitamin D dosage
A. It depends on different people. B. It is agreed to be 2,000 IU daily.
C. 400 IU is the best dose for teenagers. D. Higher dosages lead to better protective effects.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text
A. Scientists Digs the Secret of Cells B. Vitamin D May Help Slow Aging
C. A Promising Market for Vitamin D D. A Growing Number of Aging People

One sunny afternoon, I was walking home from school when I noticed an old lady sitting on a bench. She looked tired and sad. I decided to approach (靠近) her.
“Hello, ma’am. Are you okay ” I asked. She looked up and gave me a weak smile. “Yes, dear. I’m just a bit tired. I’ve been sitting here for a while.” I sat down next to her and struck up a conversation. She introduced herself as Mrs. Lee and mentioned that she lived nearby. She had been out shopping but had gotten tired and decided to have a rest. As we chatted, I noticed that her shopping bags looked quite heavy. “Would you like some help in carrying those shopping bags ” I offered. “Are you sure, dear I don’t want to trouble you,” she replied. “It’s no trouble at all. I’d be happy to help you,” I said.
So, I took some of her shopping bags, and we walked toward her house together. Along the way, she shared more about herself with me. She had been a teacher for many years and retired a few years ago. She loved reading and gardening. She told me that she enjoyed reading classic literature and mystery novels the most. She said that reading allowed her to escape into different worlds and meet fascinating characters. As for gardening, she had a beautiful garden at home where she grew a variety of flowers and vegetables. She took great pride in her roses and tomatoes, and she loved spending her mornings tending to her plants. She said that gardening was a peaceful and rewarding hobby that brought her a lot of joy.
When we reached her house she insisted on giving me some cookies as a thank-you. I accepted them gratefully and said, “It was my pleasure, Mrs. Lee. I’m glad I could help.”
