As I wandered out of my New York apartment, behind me someone called out, “Where can I find peaches ” I turned around to see a woman standing outside the greengrocer’s. The absurdity of the moment struck me — why would someone want peaches in the middle of winter It is just as absurd as sitting by the pool on a blistering summer day and reaching for a warm, woolly jumper.
I was already aware of the issues facing the food system: industrial farming ruining soils, unclear supply chains leaving citizens powerless in making the right buying decisions, and the dominance of ultra-processed foods with zero nutritional value in supermarkets. But this encounter made me see how normalized it was to expect food out of season.
After graduating, I worked at Wall Street in New York, managing portfolios (投资组合). In spite of the breathtaking view and fast-paced stock market, I was troubled by the greed underlying my work. Cooking was my escape. It had always been a passion, whether in Buenos Aires, at university, or in New York.
As I neared my 30s, I knew I needed a change and food became my north star. Through my work visiting markets and farmers around Europe, I saw first-hand why seasonality is critical in our ability to regain control of, and fix, our food system. All around me I could see how quickly flavour was disappearing from our plates. I wanted to reintroduce phenomenal flavour into people’s lives, and to re-educate and reconnect consumers with nature. In 2004, I took over Natoora, a French-founded company with a small base in London, determined to reintroduce great flavor to people’s lives and reconnect them with nature.
My two-decade-long devotion to flavor, initially a pursuit of personal pleasure, has given my work a deep sense of purpose. Flavor can emotionally connect us to food and bring joy back into our relationship with it. Changing careers opened a new world for me, filled with purpose and love for my work, and I hope it inspires others to fight for a better food-centric world.

With global life expectancy now over 70 years old, we need to change how we age, not how long we age. So begins a longevity revolution (长寿革命) — one focused on slowing the ageing process so that lives aren’t just longer but also healthier for longer.
But this requires a transformation in our health system and careers as well as individual psychology. It also demands a shift in scientific focus away from individual diseases and towards a greater understanding of the biology of ageing.
Increasing life expectancy has changed the global burden of disease. The top 10 causes of death have a common risk factor: age. If we could find a way to slow down biological ageing, we could potentially impact multiple diseases. But achieving this requires changing how we think about ageing — it means accepting that the biology of ageing is a mainstream line of scientific inquiry.
This shift also requires recognizing that ageing is not inexorable. We often draw a distinction between health and the consequences of ageing, assuming the latter are natural phenomena. That thinking reflects past success in treating diseases. But we now need to apply that progress to tackling how we age and remember the words of French philosopher Michel — to die of old age is a death rare, extraordinary, and singular, and therefore so much less natural than the others.
A focus on ageing and ageing-related diseases also leads to something unique: When progress was made in treating infant (婴儿) diseases, infant deaths fell, so research moved on to the diseases of middle age. Breakthroughs there led to fewer midlife deaths, and so science shifted to focus on ageing-related diseases. But the better we get at ageing, the more older people there will be and the more valuable further gains will be. When we are ill in our 90s, living into our 100s has little appeal. But if we can be healthy 90-year-olds, then we want to live for even longer, thus opening up the possibility of living to ages far greater than ever before.

Fighting fires usually uses water or foam, but these can make a mess and harm the surroundings. To address this, engineers at Ohio State University have now made handheld tools that put out fires cleanly with “ionic (离子的) wind” and vortex (涡流) rings.
If you’ve ever blown out a birthday candle, you’ll know that a quick burst of air can be enough to put out a flame. It works by separating the heat from the fuel so it can’t start again. But blowing on a campfire doesn’t help — it’s too big, and you just add oxygen.
The new device is like a bigger version of the birthday candle trick. First, it shoots a vortex ring of air that creates wild airflow to split heat and fuel. At the same time, the vortex carries tiny conductive particles (导电颗粒) that ionize the air and make even more vortex. In practice, firefighters would aim this handheld tool at a fire and shoot these “ionic wind” rings to put it out. That would also reduce the expense and cleanup.
“Using ionic wind and vortex ring technology, we found a more efficient way to solve an environmental problem that will improve lives,” lead researcher John Larocco said. One of the biggest advantages of this device is that it allows firefighters to put out flames from a safer distance, reducing the risk of injury. Since vortex rings can carry chemicals over long distances, firefighters wouldn’t need to get dangerously close to fires.
Much more work still needs to be done, however. For one thing, the devices were tested on groups of candles, which aren’t like real house or forest fires. Testing them against more realistic fires is a priority for future experiments. Still, the team thinks this technology could really work in the real world. The researchers also believe this device could be improved with smart sensors and image analysis, making it more precise in detecting different types of fires. Beyond firefighting, this technology could have future applications in aerospace and industrial safety.

Fragmented Learning vs. Traditional Study Methods
With the popularity of smartphones and online learning platforms, many students have adopted fragmented learning methods, such as brushing through questions or watching short videos, while neglecting systematic reading and note-taking.
In my view, while fragmented learning offers convenience, it cannot replace traditional methods. Fragmented knowledge is often shallow and lacks logical structure, making it hard to form a solid knowledge system. In contrast, systematic reading and note-taking help build comprehensive understanding and long-term memory.
Therefore, I suggest students balance both approaches. Use fragmented learning for review or broadening horizons, but stick to systematic study for core subjects. Only by integrating both can we achieve efficient and deep learning.
