As a Spanish major, I chose the IES Santiago program because it provides opportunities for service-learning programs. During my first few weeks in Santiago, I visited various organizations to get an idea of what fields I could work in. On the brochure from the Asociación Nacional de Discapacitado Mental (ANDIME), a school for children with Down syndrome (唐氏综合征), I noticed there was a music therapist (治疗师) on staff. Since my other major is music, this seemed like an ideal opportunity to get a taste of the profession.
At ANDIME, I was able to work with Ernesto, a professional music therapist, for a few hours twice a week. I spent my hours at ANDIME walking and clapping with the music, swaying and bouncing with hula hoops (呼啦圈), beating on drums, singing songs, conducting concerts, and loving a group of extremely lovely kids.
By far my most memorable moment at ANDIME happened during one of my classes with Ernesto. Most of the students had severe cases of Down syndrome, and several of them couldn’t speak and were only minimally responsive. One such student, Miguelito, was even unable to sit still, make controlled movements, or fix his eyes on anything.
On this particular day, Ernesto brought out a brand new instrument to use with the class. Ernesto held the instrument in front of Miguelito’s face. We watched excitedly as Miguelito’s eyes began to search for its sound and slowly follow it up and down. A seemingly small event was a big step in the development of this little boy.
Now back in the U.S., I am unsure of my next step. Between looking for jobs and picking out which path to pursue, I love going back to my photographs and remembering the school and my students. The pride shining in their eyes was a reward in itself.

The Produce Aggregation Program run by Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), connects small-scale urban farmers with local communities in need of healthy food. The program collects and processes crops from multiple farmers, combining them into larger quantities for wholesale distribution. This helps overcome challenges small farms face, such as limited production capacity and lack of access to processing facilities and distribution networks.
SCLT operates a farm-to-market processing center and manages logistics (后勤) for regular distribution. The program supports 27 farmers, many of whom are refugees, immigrants, or members of marginalized communities. While many of the farmers still rely on farmer markets, the program provides a more stable income source.
Twice weekly during the growing season, SCLT orders produce from participating farmers, who deliver it to the food hub. There, it is sorted and packed into $20-value bags, each containing a variety of fresh produce. These are distributed at no cost through community partners such as clinics, recreation centers, and childcare programs. Some clinics distribute the produce through VeggieRx, a program where doctors prescribe (开处方) vegetables to patients.
The program is currently funded by the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which was launched to support underserved farmers and increase food access. However, funding uncertainty remains a challenge. Rising costs, supply chain issues, limited land availability, and climate change all add strain to food assistance programs.
Despite these obstacles, SCLT continues its year-round work to improve food access. In addition to the Produce Aggregation Program, the nonprofit supports 60 community gardens, offers training, and runs educational programs and internships. Altogether, its efforts provide healthy, culturally relevant food to about 1, 200 families annually, with the support of local farmers, volunteers, and community partners.

Rise with the sun and rest at sunset — this was the way of life for our ancestors. Thanks to artificial light, which improves visibility at night, we can enjoy a much safer society and around-the-clock productivity. For wildlife, however, studies have shown it disturbs animals’ natural sleep cycles, affects amphibian (两栖的) reproduction and throws migrating birds off course.
New research in Frontiers in Plant Science investigated how artificial light impacts plant-insect relationships. Researchers from Chinese Academy of Sciences noticed tree leaves in cities typically showed fewer signs of insect damage than those outside of cities, so they analyzed 5,500 leaf samples from two tree species throughout Beijing. Researchers found more artificial light in a given area meant tougher leaves. And the tougher the leaf, the less evidence of hungry insects. They don’t fully understand why, but assume that trees under artificial light at night might be extending their photosynthesis (光合作用) time.
“Plants distribute their limited resources, such as nutrients, water and energy, among various functions like growth, reproduction and defense, depending on the environment. Light can affect how plants use resources,” says Ellen Cieraad, a plant ecologist from New Zealand. “Since plants use light for growth, artificial night light could be unnaturally increasing the time trees spend on photosynthesis, allocating more resources to chemical compounds that make leaves tougher.”
“If the same applied to leaves of other species, this would be bad news for insects,” researchers said. Changes in plants, and in interactions between plants and animals, can significantly impact the entire urban ecosystem. Herbivorous insects, which rely on leaves for food, may struggle to survive, disrupting the food chain. Fewer herbivorous insects could lead to declines in predators like birds, affecting biodiversity. Insects also play vital roles as pollinators (传粉媒介) and eat decaying plants, helping to break down leaves and returning nutrients to soil. In cities, healthy soil and healthy plant life supported by insects are good for humans, as plants provide shade and reduce heat trapped in cities.
