A rich man of Rome once publicly offered a prize to anyone who could perform something special. Encouraged by this offer, many actors came from all over the country to compete for the prize. Among them was a well-known comedian (喜剧演员), who spread the news that he would do something unusual. When the people heard his news, the whole city came together to the theater. The comedian appeared alone on the stage, carrying nothing. Suddenly, he put his head into his clothes and copied the sound of a young pig in such a natural way that the people believed he had one under his clothes and ordered him to be searched. However, once this was done, nothing could be found. They cheered and clapped for the comedian.
A farmer was in the theater, and when he saw the performance, he said, “Oh, I can do better than that!” And immediately he announced that he would perform the next day.
As a result, an even larger crowd came to the theater the following day. However, most of the people didn't think the farmer could do that, and they came to laugh at him.
When the two men came out on stage, the comedian started first, and his performance was received with great clapping. Then the farmer pretended that he had hidden a little pig under his clothes (which he had really done) and pressed its ear hard. It made a loud sound.
The people laughed. They cried out that the comedian had copied the sound much more naturally and began asking the farmer to leave the stage. But to show them how wrong they were, the farmer brought out the real pig from his clothes.
“And now gentlemen,” he said, “you can decide for yourselves what poor judges you are!”

C
Maeve Higgins once set herself a task. The Irish born comedian wanted to see what life would be like if she stopped laughing at things that weren't funny. Turn out it wasn't as easy as she thought. “It was so hard,” she says. “Laughter is a lubricant (润滑油) and is expected, and it's really hard not to do it.”
Higgins suggests there's something particularly special about being part of the shared experience that is live comedy—that curious magic that occurs when people come together specifically to laugh.
Comedy is more than just a pleasant way to pass an evening, humour more than something to amuse. They're interwoven into our everyday existence. Whether you're sharing an amusing story at a party or telling a dark joke at a funeral, humour is everywhere. But what is it for And can humour, as comedy, change how we feel, what we think or even what we do
As an essential part of human interaction, humour has been on the minds of thinkers for centuries. One of the most enduring theories of humour was put forward by the philosopher Thomas Hobbes. It asserts that humour appears to make fun of the weak and exert__superiority. While this is clearly the function of some comedy, it's far from a complete explanation for the overall purpose of humour.
For some comedians, it's not just about getting laughs—it's about changing what we think and maybe even what we do. If there's one comic who is really typical of this, it's Josie Long. A social justice activist and a comedian, Long has a reputation for delightful, optimistic humour and storytelling.
As her career has evolved, she has consciously put social and political topics at the heart of her act. She believes that comedians have a role to play in challenging some of the most pressing issues of the day.
British comic Stephen K.Amos sells out venues seating thousands, year in, year out. Amos firmly believes that when comics consciously deal with pressing or controversial (有争议的) social issues like racism, they can reach people on a much more meaningful level than that achieved by briefly lifting someone's mood. And while it may be difficult to quantify, he says, the social and psychological impact of comedy deserves much greater recognition.
The research backs this up. Although the role of comedy is to be entertaining first and foremost, Sharon Lockyer, a sociologist who studies humour, has identified a number of possible other functions. These include challenging stereotypes (刻板印象).
Amos's work frequently settles the issues of race by challenging stereotypes. “I don't do things for shock value,” he says. “I do stuff that matters to me. In the old days it was just about doing jokes. We've moved on—people are talking about things that matter.”
28.What do the first two paragraphs mainly talk about
A.The benefits of laughing.
B.What a comedian's daily work is about.
C.Why Maeve Higgins chose to be a comedian.
D.Maeve Higgins' understanding of the appeal of comedy.
29.What does the underlined phrase in Paragraph 4 most probably mean
A.Protect the weak from the evil.
B.Encourage people to be stronger.
C.Be determined to improve oneself.
D.Show you are better than other people.
30.According to the article, how does comedy have an effect on social issues
A.By gradually influencing people's attitudes.
B.By urging politicians to try and solve the issues.
C.By quickly yet thoroughly changing people's thinking.
D.By calling on the whole society to pay attention to the issues.
31.According to the article, comedy includes the following roles except ________.
A.getting people to laugh
B.promoting social progress
C.influencing people's ideas
D.making people more productive
D
The British are known for their sense of humor. However, it is often difficult for foreigners to understand their jokes. The main point to remember is that the British often use understatement.
Understatement means saying less than you think or feel. For example, if someone gets very wet in a shower of rain, he might say, “It's a little damp (潮湿的) outside.” Or, if someone is very impolite and shouts at another person, someone else might say, “She isn't exactly friendly.” Understatement is often used in unpleasant situation or to make another person look silly. Understatement plays an important part in British humor.
Another key to understanding British humor is that the British like to make fun of themselves as well as others. They often laugh about the silly and unpleasant things that happen to our everyday life. They also like to make jokes about people from different classes of society. They like to make jokes about their accents, the way they dress and the way they behave. What's more, the British love to watch comedies (喜剧) about people who do not know how to behave in society. The comedies series Mr Bean is a good example of this kind of humor.
Mr Bean is the character created by British actor Rowan Atkinson in 1990. Mr Bean doesn't talk often, and instead he uses his body movement and facial expressions to make people laugh. Perhaps what makes Mr Bean so funny is that he does things that adults in the real world cannot do. Mr Bean is popular in many countries around the world because you do not have to speak English to understand the humor. Because of this, many people have become familiar with the British sense of humor.
32.Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes
A.The British often enlarge the fact.
B.British jokes are connected with many different cultures.
C.British jokes are not as funny as jokes in other countries.
D.The British try to make out that something is less important than it is.
33.The author explains understatement by ________.
A.describing a process
B.making comparisons
C.following time order
D.using examples
34.Mr Bean makes laugh by ________.
A.using his body movement and facial expressions
B.making jokes about others' accent
C.copying how others behave
D.telling funny stories
35.What can be the best title for the text
A.British Humor in Comedy
B.Humor in Different Cultures
C.Understanding British Humor
D.Developing Your Sense of Humor

A merchant sent his son to learn the secret of happiness from the wisest man. The young man wandered through the desert for a long time until he reached a beautiful castle at the top of a mountain. There lived the wise man the young man was looking for.
In the castle, he saw merchants coming and going, people talking in the corners and a small band playing beautiful music. There was a table with different kinds of delicious foods on it. The wise man talked to everybody. The young man had to wait for two hours until it was time for him to talk to the wise man.
The wise man listened carefully to the reason for the young man's visit. He told the young man that at that moment he had no time to explain to him the secret of happiness. He suggested that the young man take a walk around his castle and come back in two hours. “However, I want to ask you a favour,” he added. He handed the young man a spoon, into which he put two drops of oil. “While you walk, carry this spoon and don't let the oil spill.”
The young man began to walk around the castle, always keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon. After two hours, he returned to see the wise man. “So,” asked the wise man, “did you see the beautiful curtains hanging from the windows Did you see the garden that the best gardeners in our country took ten years to build Did you notice the beautiful furniture in my library?”
Embarrassed, the young man admitted that he had seen nothing. His only concern was not to spill the two drops of oil as the wise man had told him.

Why a Sense of Humour Is Important
Humour shows a person's character. If you can see everything with a sense of humour, you are an interesting person, and people won't feel bored when they are with you. It also shows that you are a well educated person.
You are healthy and happy with your sense of humour, for it always keeps you in high spirits, which is good for your health. A sense of humour changes the colour of the whole world for you.
You will also have plenty of friends with your sense of humour. People feel it a pleasure to be with you, for you help them to see things from an entirely different and much brighter point of view. You give people strength and you lighten their hearts with hope.

“Go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can't trust a man if you don't know his house.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。

Now feeling more relaxed, the young man took the spoon and walked around the castle again. This time he paid close attention to all the works of art that hung from the ceilings and walls. He saw the garden and the mountains around the castle. He smelled the beautiful flowers and tasted the delicious foods. Then he returned to the wise man, and reported all that he had seen to the wise man.
“But where are the two drops of oil that I gave you?” asked the wise man. Looking down at the spoon, the young man realised that he had spilled the oil. “Well, this is the only advice that I will give you,” said the wise man. “The secret of happiness lies in looking at all the wonders of the world and never forgetting the two drops of oil in the spoon.”

篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了英式幽默的关键特点是轻描淡写和喜欢开自己和他人的玩笑。
32.Why is it difficult for foreigners to understand British jokes

“Go back and see the wonders of my world,” said the wise man. “You can't trust a man if you don't know his house.”
