In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats. People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called Elephant Transit Home (ETH).
Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and care for baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. Many are brought to the ETH.There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd.
A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk.During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. There are no boundaries in the area for the baby elephants as they have the freedom to walk wherever they want. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.
At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connections with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
The ETH is considered as one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, but they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.

31. What’s the purpose of the text

Two of the biggest challenges faced by new and potential electric vehicle (EV) drivers are range anxiety and the speed of charging(充电). However, these shouldn’t have to be challenges at all. That is according to a study by Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, and the University of Delaware, USA. Researchers discovered that a change in refuelling mindset (观念模式), rather than improving the size or performance of the battery, could be the answer to these concerns.
Researchers have now identified three different types of behaviour around refuelling a car. The first model is the monitoring fuel gauge (测量仪器) model — the driver refuels when the fuel is running out. The second model is the planning a trip model — the driver plans when and where they will stop to refuel their vehicle along a journey. The third model is the event-triggered model — the driver automatically plugs in (接通电源) as soon as arriving home or work. The first model represents how most people refuel a petrol car, and the third model is the best for EV usage.
Experienced EV users have chosen an event or location to trigger their plug-in; for example, they will automatically plug in when they come home or get to work, so it becomes part of their morning or evening routine, which makes it less of a chore to think about charging. There is a lot of emphasis on the time it takes to charge an EV, but if you do it overnight, it is just the time it takes to plug it in.
In conclusion, for most people’s everyday driving, the new study shows that you don’t have to think too much about charging at all. In terms of cost, it is also a lot cheaper to charge slowly overnight or at work than fast charging on the go, and it is better for the health of the battery.
32. In which part of a newspaper can you most likely to read the text
A. Culture. B. Technology. C. Fashion. D. Health.
33. What does the text advise EV drivers to do
A. Monitor fuel gauge occasionally. B. Think about the speed of charging.
C. Charge EVs at night or during work. D. Plan their trips according to their cars.
34. What can be inferred from the text
A. A bigger battery is the best solution to range anxiety.
B. It’s difficult for drivers to remember to charge EVs.
C. Fast charging is much cheaper than slow charging.
D. Charging is not a concern for those wanting to buy EVs.
35. What may be the best title for the text
A. Choosing a better EV B. Petrol cars or electric cars
C. Slow charging or fast charging D. Changing your refuelling mindset

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
Tim was a senior high school student who loved giving nicknames (绰号) to his classmates. However, almost all the nicknames he came up with were meant to mock (嘲笑) his classmates. For example, he called Lisa “Big Glasses” just because she wore thick-framed glasses to see clearly. Mike, who was a little heavier than others, was given the nickname “Fatty” by Tim.
The classmates didn’t like Tim’s behavior at all. Lisa once told Tim sadly, “Please don’t call me ‘Big Glasses’ anymore. It really hurts my feelings.” Mike also warned Tim, “If you keep calling me ‘Fatty’, I won’t talk to you.” But Tim paid no attention to their words. He thought it was all in good fun and often laughed when he called others by those nicknames.
Gradually, no one wanted to hang out with Tim. During breaks, while other students were chatting and playing together in the classroom or on the playground, Tim always sat alone in his seat. Sometimes he tried to join a group of classmates, but they would simply drift away. Tim felt a bit lonely, but he still didn’t realize that his habit of giving bad nicknames was the reason.
One afternoon, Tim stayed in the classroom to finish his math homework. Sam, whom Tim regarded as his good friend, came in with two other boys. Tim didn’t make a sound, so they didn’t notice him. He heard Sam say, “Tim is so boring. He only knows how to give foolish nicknames to others. I call him ‘Nickname Freak’ behind his back.” The other boys laughed. Tim’s heart sank. He finally understood how hurtful those nicknames were and how impolite and disrespectful his behavior was.

Firstly, you should be kind and friendly. Then, no matter where you are , you must care others more ,which is also very important. What’s more, you should avoid conflicting with friends although there is some disagreement.Be patient and try to discuss with them.
I believe you will soon become adapted to everything in the new school and become happy again!
Yours,
LiHua

参考范文:
That night, Tim could barely sleep. He kept thinking about what Sam had said and the sad faces of his classmates when he had nicknamed them. Early the next morning, Tim made a decision: he would change. When he got to the classroom, Lisa was reading a book. Instead of saying “Big Glasses”, Tim said politely, “Hi, Lisa.” Lisa looked up, surprised. Then Mike came in, and Tim greeted him, “Morning, Mike.” Mike was also shocked. Tim took a deep breath before saying to both of them, “I’m sorry for giving you bad nicknames before. I won’t do that anymore.”
After Tim apologized, something nice happened. Lisa smiled and said, “It’s okay, Tim. We’re glad you realized that.” Mike nodded and added, “Yeah, let’s be friends again.” Soon, other classmates heard about Tim’s apology. During the break, some students came to talk to Tim. They chatted about homework and hobbies. Tim felt happy because he was no longer lonely. Day by day, Tim always called his classmates by their real names. He also learned to care about others’ feelings. In the end, Tim built a positive and respectful relationship with his classmates, and he truly understood the importance of mutual respect.

Text 10
M: Did you know that chimpanzees have excellent math skills Or that electronic dance music can reduce the appetite of mosquitoes These were just two of the 10 studies awarded at Pineapple Science Award ceremony in China. For many years, this Chinese award has explored and recognized the fun side of science and encouraged curiosity-driven scientific research. Being interesting is a very important standard for the prize. However, it’s not all funny business. In fact, all entries must be serious scientific studies which have been published in recognized academic journals or presented at conferences. A study by researchers from Kyoto University in Japan was the winner of the award for mathematics and art. They found that a chimpanzee could remember random numbers both more quickly and more accurately than the students. The prize for medicine went to the researchers from Malaysia and the Cayman Islands. Their collaborative research showed that the next time mosquitoes are bothering you, you may want to play some certain type of music.
